LDM there is a lot of it going around, we will all be back to scratch building soon.
It must be very hard for a manufacturer of kit or ARF to make money especially if your kit is very good quality. Just trying to keep prices down and know how many to produce, what people need etc. With big kits I'm surprised they don't make a batch to order, get so many pre-orders and then make them.
Not a business I would like to be in.
Smaller kits not so bad a they are not usually to the same standard, so cheaper to make bulk. Unfortunately we all want the most for our $$$$ so it pushes the market down, leaving cheap and very expensive with not much of a middle price.

I would love to go 4 stroke, with something like a Valach Motors 60cc or a Kolm EZ65. But then again, I may go on the side of a little cheaper like a Zenoah G62! But I definitely want to get something that can turn a 24" 3 blade.

I agree with the 85 as best option if your budget can swing it - I am turning a 22-10x3 Biela on a G-62 and while it does it with no issues the performance is minimal. Its on a heavy bomber & the G-62 is great nose weight but I dont see it spinning a 24". You can see the Biela 22-10x3 - G62 performance combination on my Stuka - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaOCHl8ACFQ
As part of the continuing illness of scale, my eyes require the look of 3 blades when I fly regardless the sacrifice of performance.

I may end up ordering an engine a lot sooner than I had anticipated. Friday evening I mocked up some rough engines out of styrofoam blocks to see if they would fit under the cowling.

I would go with a bigger KOLM! I am getting the IL-135 or the IL-150. I don't think you will be happy with the 65...
You are very wrong on the G62!! I have a G62 STOCK and I am running a 27x6 2-Blade on it!! Has MORE than enough power! I have it on a Balsa USA 1/3rd scale Sopwith.

Just looked up the Kolm EZ65 powerplant. I see the Yellow P-40 has a 86 inch wingspan and is said to come in around 27 pounds. Not sure what to compair the EZ65 to, but my Byron is 83 inch wing span, weights in at 28 pounds and flys well on my DA-50 with a 22x8 producing 26 pounds of thrust. The Byron pulls well, climbs well, and does great large scale loops. I did have to add 3 pounds of lead to the nose to balance her, so I guess a heaver (larger cc) engine could have been installed, but the 50cc is what I had.
Keep us up on the progress
If the EZ65 creates more power (Thrust) it should do well.

Hi,
Well, sadly I didn't get around to getting myself one before they were gone. I had one left and generally, I don't compete with my customers so Chicoflyer got it! I previously had a Y/A P-40 ARF and it was amazing. Sliding canopy, full rivets, etc. I had a G-62 on it and she ripped. Full right rudder on takeoff, but she was much faster than this TF. This one flies a little 'easier' but is more bouncy on the landings. It doesn't quite have the warbird feel of the Y/A, but she'll do now for the thrill.

LDM,
Sure. It's a nifty little unit sold by Mile High RC. It doesn't come with instructions, so they say you should know your way around an engine. You need a 13mm long-reach socket and a gear puller. The unit comes with a replacement drive washer/thrust washer and a one-way sprocket that go on your crankshaft. The unit includes two sets of standoffs, the shorter of which go with the DLE 55. I bought the starter unit which negates the need for s speed control, and goes directly in between your receiver and your battery ( I used 3-cell lipo). The motor that comes with it is just a plain old Mabuchi-looking 480, but it's geared up to give you better than 100 starts per charge.
Makes it so much fun!
