Default Wingspan retracts

G`Day
I have received and fitted to my 60 size P-40 Wingspan retracts. I fitted them with Robart struts and Rodart 4" wheels with plastic hubs. I believe there is too much weight for these retracts to work properly when going through their cycle (they are stalling and locking up). They may work with wire struts and lightweight wheels. Therefore I will not be using these retracts.

Have you discussed this problem with Wingspan. Seems silly that they can't raise the Robart wheels, they are pretty light.

Cheers,

Sierra's in mine have been flawless for 3 years now. Airline restrictors slow the cycle and it looks really great.

I have had the same problem with E-flite retracts- they told me basically that I was stupid and they have "never" seen this problem before. If the Wingspan are like the E-flite then they have a spring inside that rotates the shaft. This spring is normally weak even with the light weight wheels. I found new springs for mine and installed them and they worked great. If yours have the same set up then be careful trying to wind the spring one more rotation as most are cheap and will break. That is why I purchased high quality springs with two more turns. They worked great on light or normal wheels.

Just an FYI

Good luck

Keith

First make sure the air system is hooked up and works, then get a pair of disconnectors and put the air tank in the fuselage. If you have trouble finding a big enough tank (I do) use an empty hair spray can. Just drill out the exit tube and replace it with a 1/8 brass tube and set it all up with JB Weld. Works great! My air tanks are ~twice as big as those big ones you can buy from Robart and solid unlike the PET plastics others have tried until they failed.

Dutchey, I have been in contact with Max from Parkrc , they also have a pair of new retracts rated for planes in the 24 to 30 lbs range. I know that is much higher then the 60 size P40 but you can email Max at Park RC and get the specs.
With struts and wheels thay are $179 , I just received an order from them on something elese and it was fast and excellant shipping.
I think the retracts in question are made my Lanseng, they are very attuned and connected to RC and the cost is low because they are the manufacture, at leate its worth an email .
As stated Sierra is the best in air , and I use the robart parts above regardless of what air retracts I have used in the past .
For now anything i can convert to eletric I do because its so easy.

Hey - where did everyone go?

Question if anyone still there -

My pipes on my muffler don't extend all the way outside my Cowl. I found some soft Silicone tubing but am not sure if this will hold up to the temperature or not. It should since it is Silicone but my question is how close to the fiberglass can I have the Pipes?

I plan on cutting the tubing to shorter length once I know if I can use it or not.

See the attached pictures and let me know if the holes should be bigger. I want to keep them as small as possible but don't want to melt my fiberglass either.

Thanks

Semper Fi

Keith

Looking at the photo`s they seem to protrude just outside the cowl, I would leave the silicon tubes off, I don`t think heat will be a problem from what I see in the photo`s, maybe just open the holes a little more.

Here are a few more pictures of my P-40 Build

The Switch and Air panel is not fixed in the fuselage so it is not square in the picture. Hard to hold the panel and take the picture with my arm half way up the fuselage........

Hey Keith;
I will say do a test run of the engine with the Silicone tubing, ( on the ground ), and see how they hold up. The holes in the cowling look good to me!! I like to leave a very small gap, just like the ones you have in your pictures. Please let us know the outcome of your test!!!

A couple more pictures.

This is my first build with a Retractable / Steerable tail wheel and even after looking at all the threads and asking questions it took me over a week of trial and error and mounting the servo in different locations before I came up with a solution I liked.

I know that most just connect it to the Rudder servo but the tail wheel well is so narrow that I was having issues getting the wheel back inside if I happen to be using the rudder when the gear were rotated up.

I didn't want the tail wheel to hang up during retract then it would bind up my rudder then I would have BIG problems so I put the tail wheel on it's own servo and now it works great.

I am also working on the tail wheel door linkage which I will show later when it is finished.

FYI - all the wiring is not completed and I still have some "cleaning up" to do on routing the wires and making it look nice and neat. I will mount up the Access Panel next week when my parts get here then I can start the final phase of the build.

Semper Fi

Keith

The silicon tubing will most assuredly hold up to the heat, I use it all the time on my mufflers. However I agree with dutchy that the silicon looks unecessary for your application. As long as the pipes are not actually touching the glass cowl you will be fine.

Dutchy,

I should have screwed the cowl on because when I do that the end of the shorter of the two pipes will be about 1/4 inside the cowl and that is the one that worries me.
