Does anyone know of a P-40 kit larger than the Ziroli?

For someone out there that might have a Nitro Planes CMP P-40, here are a few photos of the second one I have. The first one was lost to a mid-air. I didn't like the way the exhaust was just glued to the plane so I modified mine. Then I wanted a retractable tail wheel, so I added one of those. The first CMP P-40 had to be landed hot to keep it from tip stalling and snapping into the ground, so I deciced to add flaps to this one to see if I could slow it down a little. I had just purchased a set of Sierra 60 size rotating P-40 retracts for the first P-40, and had two flight on it before the mid-air. So I decided to add them to this build. Those are in the wing now, Just a few more things to before I can glue the wings together and finish it......

I've heard this and I've also hear people say these flew great and would float forever. Did the later built planes fly better than the earlier versions? I came late to the CMP party and picked one of these up last fall, I figured there would have been a long thread on here about this plane but I didn't come up with a ton of information using the search function.

Do you remember what your other one weighed; what did you use for an engine? I got as far as putting Century Jet retracts in mine and ran out of spare time. I have an AGM 30 that I plan to use but a lot of work needs to be done in the fuselage and I'm having a hard time lining up the spare time and motivation at the same time to get it accomplished.

I like your flap and exhaust mods. I was going to try to fly mine without flaps at least at first, but the exhaust is definitely going to be changed.

I have two CMP , lost one to engine failure but it was a total gem, dont understand the snap comment on the 73" size , the small one was a disaster . Mind you I am not criticizing you, I just dont get what is happeing with your P40 .
I plan on epower in my next one and a full bash with Flaps, the only reason why I am doing the work is how great the first one flew.
The first one has a Saito 180 in it , I was able to save the motor and all the servos, but the frame was lost .
The thing I dont like about them is the fuse is a weeker glass so I line mine with Flite skin

Hi gregandhollie,

Yes they would float for ever, but if you got it to slow, it would snap. My first one weighted 12 # and I used a Saito 150 in it. I plan on using that same engine in this one. I hope the flaps allow me to carry power and still slow it down for a good landing. I didn' like the White U.S. Army on the top of the wing. Also the paint flakes off the Mylar covering on the wings and the Horizontial stab. I will make changes to the cockpit also. With the instrument panel decal laid down at a 45º angle, how does the pilot read the instruments? Just kidding, but I will make a nice Instrument panel the way it should be. I want to paint it in the Desert Tan an Brown and do a Yellow stab and vertical fin & rudder with Black Dimonds on them.....

Larry if you google CMP P40 Flying Video there is a great build on RCU from a guy name Tause from the Netherlands.
He totally based this plane with flaps , sliding canopy , scale spinner and so on ,
Very cool detailed work .

Thanks guys!

The thin fuselage is one thing I'm going to deal with. I bought mine on eBay and all of the balsa had been broken out of it, so I have an empty shell but still have all the wood too. I need to build a firewall because the engine is standoff mount, plus I need to put all the pieces back in and add fiberglass to strengthen some areas. My paint is flaking, cracking and there are some minor cracks in the fuselage fiberglass so I plan to repaint mine too, luckily on mine the decals weren't under clearcoat like I see they were on some. I wanted to get it together and get some flights on it before refinishing it because...well, you know. LDM's comments on it make me confident though.

Its worth trust me just google the flights on you tube .
I have about 5 different CMPs and the MO is all the same for me .
I add thin paper thin ply sanded down and I sand the fuse and CA the ply in place . Make the area super strong and no tin canning.
I add Flite skin to the rear fuse inside , same method as the ply .

Great Info!
I picked up a CMP P-40 at auction and I'm assembling it with Sierra Retracts. I planned to put in an OS 160 2-stroke but changed to a MVVS 35 cc gas engine.
Please show more pictures of your mods!
Thank you!

I purchased an old TF P-40 (0.60 size) kit-built that has been modified to a P-36 with a wood constructed cowl. Is it possible to modify it back to P-40 configuration using an ARF fiberglass cowl without having to modify the fuselage?

I have a set of Robart 150HD8's in mine. http://www.robart.com/products/heavy...racts-8-struts

I would compair to these and see how they match up in size and strength. If equal to, or greater than, I would go with them and build to fit. However if less than I would caution the use. Be sure to post some pics of the build too.

I am a P40 fan. Have built a couple over the years. A Bob Holman Plans P40 w/ a ST 90 and a Pica 1/6 scale P40. Many flights on the Holman until I did a slow low loop and spun in. Hence the Pica P40 with a CRRC 26 gas. Twelve flights last summer. Flaps and CJ retracts. Have attached a couple of pics.

I have a topflite P-40 .60 size, I got the Dle 20 Ra and have installed it in but the exhaust is hitting the engine mount and the front of the cowl is too far away from the spinner plate. The only recourse I have it to change the engine mount, extend the cowl by about a 1/4 inch and build up the fuselage because there is a ring on the outside of the fuse that the cowl fits snug against. I'm not sure I trust a plastic engine mount. So it will be hard to find a aluminum mount.. does anyone have this engine on their warhawk?

Ok just figured out how to do this. As you can see the muffler is hitting the engine mount.

No this way I have a 1/4 gap between the front of the cowl and the spinner plate.

Hangar 9 sells an aluminum motor mount that is included in their .60-size warbirds. It will give you back that 1/4 inch. I have used it many times.
