Have many done operational cowl flaps on the P-40? I'm contemplating whether or not I want to try to tackle them on my build.

I got started on a new (old) P 40 this weekend. This one has been around a while, check the date out on the second pic.
Either way, I am planning to make this one electric and install retracts. The kit has no damage and the parts have never been out of the plastic until this weekend.
It is going together really fast and it looks pretty good.

Very cool, is this one of the early ARFs that has thin foam sheeting over a Balsa structure ?
They were interesting in there design, very difficult to fix but cool for there time

You are right, that is the way the kit is built. I had a couple of these way back in the early 90's and they fly great.
I am very impressed with the die cutting and the way all the parts fit together, they were way ahead of their time.
It's been hanging around long enough... time to fly!

Only bad part is that I will have to remove the wing to change batteries.

I have just got the plans fot the 65" Brian Taylor P-40 and realized it does not show retracts. Can anybody give info on suitable retracts and how the wing needs to be modified to mount them please.

Clive:
I used Rohm Airs in mine, but that was about 33 years ago. They are no longer made, you might get a set through the want ads. Do not use the small Robart or Century Jet Models ones. They are cr*p. The best ones are from Sierra, the small 95 degree rotators, they are pretty much bullet proof. Buy them from http://www.vqwarbirds.com/product_in...82eb4020334529 . Send me a PM and if I can find them, I'll send you a PDF for the wing mod templates. 4" Robart scale wheels (with the nylon hubs) work well for this bird.
Cheers,

They are certainly "Beefy" They look like they are an early version of electric retracts before suppliers decided to make as much money for the least product.

What weight is your P-40?

Pity you don't know who made them, but they are probably out of business by now due to making too good a product.

Rob Pike makes some incredible P40 interiors, if you google Rob Pike RC Interiro kits it should come up .
He is down right now with some house issues but its a link worth saving beause he is not out of line with cost and makes excellant quality details
