Sat morning . . .
First, I wake up.. and look outside. Uh oh, it's wet and raining. Hmm. little wind though!
Listen to the radio forcast as I lay in bed.... showers today, but light winds, Sunday? Clear, but with 20 to 30 mph winds.
However, I get up and look at the computer, seems a bit more optomistic. Radar shows little rain, but clouds. OK, I can deal with clouds. By 11 am, it seems to be getting brighter.. call a few buddies to help, plan to try it at 1 pm.
Load the car.... the wing and fuse barely fit in together at the same time. Good thing the console is a quick removal one! If I end up likeing this plane, going to have to make the wings into a 3 pc design. Hard to move a 115" wing up the baement steps!!

So - Get to the field.. start to set up.
Club members gather... surprised to see a test flight at the end of the flying season.
Some assembly required. The old Byron stand is rated for 40 lbs. The plane weighs 54. But, it holds, but I am careful not to stress it,
Have decided to do the first flight with a 2 blade prop - if I break a prop, at least it will not be the 3 blade!
Air up, fuel up.. choke on.. flip.. flip .. flip.... Hmm. Oh, turn the ignition on dummy! Now it pops. Seems to start OK, but a little lean. Shut it of, richen it up a bit.
Hey! no more rain... and the sky is lightening up pretty well. Let's go!!

OK - have my buddy - jkezel helping.. engine starts.. taxi out... stay calm....
Give it the gas, plane tracks OK, lifts the tail in 30 feet .. wait for it .. comes off the ground in 60 or 70 feet! WOOT! Ease it up .. climb out, but not too much as I feel out the controls a bit. Make the first turn, .. Uh oh ! The engine sounds "funny".. oh crap! It's sagging !! stay calm ...
Ease the throttle back to half, Hmm, engine comes to life again. Let it fly..... let it fly... hoping this is related to the engine sitting for a couple of years.
Pull the gear up. Check. Add left trim.. add more left trim. Add elevator trim.... OK - going pretty straight. Starting to groove a bit. So far, so good?
Seems to be running OK now, give it full throttle .. oops, engine sags again! Dammit. Back to half throttle, engine recovers. Hmmm. So I decide to fly it for 5 minutes.. staying high just in case the engine dies, I have a chance to hit the field. Other club member lands.. let's get this bird down!
Start the downwind, add half flaps.. OK, no problem.. Turn base.. add full flap.. no problem....
On final.... must clear the fence, keep enough speed to be safe since I have not had to opportunity to fly it slow yet to ensure the engine won't die.
Line up with the field ... Jack says "let it settle "... seems to be floating... floating... floating ...right past us!
That's OK, have enough grass to roll out on... settles in like a big trainer. Whew!!
Roll out to end of gress, can't turn in time, so just shut it down there. A bit stressful with the engine situation, but overall, plane seems to fly well.
Gentlemen! We have a test flight! And, a big baby on landing ! Even at 54 lbs !
Somebody took some video - I'll have to get them to post it when available.

OK - all good, plane up and down safely.
Now, what the heck is going on with the engine? Notice there is fuel just dripping out of the carb. Hmm, that's not normal. Figure I have the plane out here, rain is holding off, lets pull the prop and cowl.. then the carb for inspection.
The carb screen is very dirty. clean that. Check the rest of the carb, seems OK.. clean everythig up and reasseble the cowl. Decide to put the 3 blade prop on.. I can tell it's not going to nose over, so let's tune the engine to this prop. OK - start it up... seems a bit lean yet, richen it up.. sounds good! Let's go again.
line it up.. lift off! again, the plane climbs out well, gear up, all good. Really hoping to make a low pass, I hate flying high up. Engine sounds good now.....
Put the nose down a bit.. engine revs up, and sags again. dammit. What the heck. Sure enough, the engine is sagging every time it speeds up. Ran great on the ground. Again, don't fully trust the engine. Fly for 5 minutes, bring it in, again.
Again, very easy landing, floats right in with full flap. Engine runs great on the ground for 5 munites at full throttle. Not sure what is wrong. Oh well, decide to pack it in and figure it out later. Again, notice fuel dripping out of carb ? Hmm, needle and seat were working. Can't think what may be wrong.
Any ideas guys? Plane runs great on the ground, sags in the air with rpms. Engine does seem hot after landing. Step one will be some baffles to direct the air to the cylinders. Probably will open the bottom of the cowl up as well to get more air out.
But why the dripping fuel? Maybe I'll get a carb kit and try that? I have a tube on the vent for the pump, had it run into the engine box for static air pressure. Thoughts?? 3W 140 btw.
Anyway, good day of test flights... plane flies well, just need to figure out the engine.
I am running 4.8 volts for the ignition, one guy says it should be a 6 volt pack? Even though the ignition says 4.8V right on it, he say AI told him to run a 6 V pack? What are you guys doing??
Last pictue is right after the 2nd test flight. Me goofing off.

RE: Corsair: 115
Congratulations !!
I've been watching with interest, and am glad you got the test flights in safely. The engine could be simlpy overheating. If you don't have enough air exit area, (gear heads say 3 to 1 ratio) it will overheat and sag. My friend ahs a 3W 110 that drips fuel - he got tired of fiddling with it and bought a new one. Nice job and a good looking plane.

This is one big airplane, first flight and first time I used this camera to video this flight for Jim.. This Kodak camera is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker, I spent over 8 hours trying to figure this out, anyway I did find a converter to change the video formats around so I could salvage a little of the flight to put on video, if any one knows about the the Kodak Z990 camera and wants to post info on theuse here that would be great.I used a Koyote Video Converter and the video lost all its HD sharpness... the address of the site below to click on or copy and paste to get to the videoon youtube...George.

OK -
Getting issues addressed...
First, ordered a carb kit from Aircraft International. Promt service as always, it arrived Thur. Cleaned carb up very well... installed all new parts. Carb overhaul: Complete. just need to adjust it.
Second, it seemed the engine was a bit hot after the flight... could have been the carb settings, but decided to build up some baffels like I do on some of my large aerobats. Top portion is attached to the engine box, the lower portion is attached to the cowl. This will force the air that comes in to go over the cylinders. Also, cut out some more of the lowwer cowl to let more air out. Will paint it black to hide it some.
Friday.. have the day off, hope to test fly as it's 50 and no wind.

Friday:
Looks like it will warm up nicely... Charge the batteries... oops, left them on since last weekend!! ooops. They charge up fine though! Whew.
Load the plane, head out around noon. First, assemble and set the needels.... starts OK, runs well. Good. Ooops, a small drip of fuel .. drip.. drip. Darn it. Take the punp cover off, adjust the arm on the pump to get a little more pressure on the needle. Run again.. all good. Put the cowl on, get ready to go.
Notice, I painted the cooling ducting black, it hides it well.

Fuel up..Check.
Air up... Check.
Fire it up.. take off. All good. engine is running very well now. The 28X12 3 blade is singing nicely. No sag this time!
OK - let's bring her down on the deck.. wow! Good speed for such a large plane. I try and not go too fast. After all, it is a foam wing that I didn't build. Don't want to overspeed it.. at least not yet!
Only remaining issue.. is the tailwheel. Seems the tiller rod that turns the tailwheel is too weak. For the second time, with good landings.. it bends over. Hmm. Will need to address this, but may wait til winter. Bend it back for now..
Second flight.. all good again. The plane grooves well and has a ton of pull. Massive loops? No problem. Landings? No problem. 4 flights in? No problem.
So - project "Old School" restoration? Sucess! WOOT!
Well worth the 6 or 7 weeks of work to rebuild and update the airframe. Now, just need to add some weathering to hide the years of wear and tear.
Again, winter project. Want to get back to my Mustang build soon.
However, good weather tomorrow.. probably goona taker her out to fly again.
Hey, can't resist....

So - have done some reworks...
New 50 oz fuel tank with a clunk that will NOT fall off[:@]
And - upgraded the retracts.. The current ones were rated for 40lbs - the new ones I picked up off the site are rated for 50 lbs. A little more appropriate for a 53lb model.
Notice the size difference? The white ones are the current - see the extra diameter.. and the angled folding portion is steel, not alum like the original ones.
Had to shorten the legs a bit - which I could do since the sciccors are adjustable on the new ones.. So out comes the tubing cutter, and shorter they go. Installed them, tested well, Good to go.
Plan to head out tomorrow as the weather looks to be 50 - 55 or so.
Tail wheel: Replaced the tiller rod that kept bending with some piano wire - won't bend again. The pic dosen't really show this home made retract unit.... and the major rebuild I did on it to make it strong. Should be fine now....

Now, this airframe is / was very old and beat up when I got it.. and I really don't care for shiney warbirds as actual service aircraft rapidly became beat up when put in service.. so ... need to weather this thing a bit.
however, the paint is some unknown, older automotive stuff ... and it is very, very hard. I decided to rub it down with some 000 steel wool to "fade" the paint a bit .. dull it down. It was so shiney when I flew it, it reflected way too much sun into my eyes for my liking. Not super happy with it yet, but a start on weathering. I also used some Testors silver paint to simulate some wear and tear.. then rubbed it slightly as well. Will be interested to see what it looks like out at the field tomorrow.....Hmmm.
I am probably going to repaint it anyway, but wanted to try this interm step.. it did bring some of the surface detail up a bit anyway.....
The other benfit? It hides the big gouges and damge of 15 years or so of garage storage.

I did order a Nosen canopy from Fiberglass Specialties... it is nice and clear, .. BUT - it has no canopy frame on it like this one? Darn. I will have to build one maybe, OR - does anybody have a D W Corsair canopy with the early canopy frame? ?? [ insert chirping birds here .. I bet not. ]
The plane had no exhaust ports - so made up these way-stand-off-scale ones. Used a thin pc of ply with 3 cut pcs of brass tubing.
Glues them on about where they go ... add some exhaust staining.... Illusion complete.
Again, I like my warbirds dirty.
Probably with get the airbrush out sometime to do some other stuff - but flying session tomorrow, so that's enough "detailing" for now.
