ESM BF-110C ZERSTORER 95" TWIN

RE: ESM BF-110C ZERSTORER 95
I used THREE screws per side. I am not running them into the aluminum tube either. I have each screw going into blind nuts. The removable sections on my plane are the wingtips outboard of the flaps.

Sorry to digress about the ESM VAL for a second.
Lifer, the VAL has a huge wing and very effective flaps. It slows down well and I basically chop the power almost to idle on the final. She lands slow and predictable much like a trainer. Honestly! BTW, I fly off of a paved surface. The weakest point on almost all scale planes this size and weight is the gear. One of the biggest selling points about the VAL is NO RETRACTS! The LG wire is big and fairly stiff. Could be stiffer, I think. The landing gear mount is made of laminated plywood and the verticle hole in the mount has metal plate within the laminations for strength and to help prevent "wallowing out" the hole where the wire goes vertically there. The design is about as solid as they could make it my opinion and not bad for an ARF from the Far East. I did have a landing or two where the gear flexed back and broke off a piece of the fiberglass fairing above the wheel pant strut area. Its just a fiberglass trim collar. I've neglected to repair it yet. In the near future, I'd like to investigate a possibility for maybe some robart struts with an oleo mechanism to help with the shock of less than perfect landings. I think it could be easily done but would require some wheel pant mods and some fiberglass work to make it look pretty again. So, long story short, I think the VAL gear design is acceptable and they have done a good job of strengthening the gear mount. I wouldn't let it deter you from what I think is a great flying plane!
OK, sorry folks, now get on with the 110!

Second on the Val. You could surf on that wing! No trouble w/ the main gear tho the tailwheel is a mess. Have to redesign the mount etc. A beautiful flying warbird!
Now baxk to the 110!

I don't know about any one else with this plane but as for me I had two flights on this airplane and it flys like crap!, which is not very good. The first flight was way tail heavy, second flight with more weight in the nose was not impressive either, it seems to lack power with 20cc gas engine, just changed the engines out with 26cc units and adding more nose weight as well before trying again.

I do believe I mentioned moving the CG further forward then the 146mm you had set it at. Mine flies nice and sweet, quite well behaved at 135mm.
I cant help on the gas motor size as mine has two electric power 60's with 16x10x3 props.

I agree, the information i have which came with this airplane calls for a CG of 147mm which is way off.. I just added more weight to take it to about 25% from leading edge of wing root, which moves the CG to about 5" from the front of the wing leading edge. I have added a total of 2 pounds of lead to the front of the fuselage bringing the total weight of the airplane to 27 pounds. The airplane brochure states just over 19 pounds.

RE: ESM BF-110C ZERSTORER 95
ESM's finished weights have always been low. As for the CG, my manual for the me-110 stated 85mm...but that's the CG for the B-25 and even that is nose heavy. B-25 flies better at 115.
The 147mm for the me-110 was from the kit reviewer(Tom Hunt I think) on rcgroups that had is electric conversion put in an article for Fly RC magazine.
Most often, ESM's cg listing is listed too far back. Dunno why.

Maybe so that the brochures can advertise the lower aircraft weight?Risky business doing that though, but not the first company that has done that either.

You know, I don't mind if the airplane weighed more if there was truth in the advertised weight. I would have bought bigger engines to start, but now I have one 20cc left I have on ebay to sell, and I bought two more larger 26cc engines, lot of money to go through that i should have not had to...
As it turned out I got a good flight yesterday with the 26cc engines installed and the weight CG set at 5 inches behind the L.E.
The next problem I just can't beleive how everything seems to be going to sh et. with some of these retailers selling this stuff,,, ( I got the two 26cc RCG engines from Hobby king, I had a lot of problem getting them to run about the same power curve.. One of the guys told me that the two engines are different, sure enough the two engines have different cylinder head castings with the spark plug holes on the opposite sides.. i had not noticed because I was so into getting the engines installed and trying to fly this airplane.)
The plane flys great a high throtle and at mid range it is a near disaster since the RPM is way off on the two engines. Looks like I well fly it like this because I am not sinking any more money into this project.
Another thing I noticed is that the gell coat on the fiberglass fuselage is very brittle, cracks and peeling seems to come from no where, i know I well need to reinforce these spots with fiberglass from the fuse inside and do the outside with filler and spot paint. Wish i could get my money back on this whole project. I am going to look into customer disatisfaction clause in my MC card purchase agreement.

For those two engines that don't sync well, have you considered using a Twinsync device?
Regarding listed weights. ESM prints the weights without any extras. IE.....no retracts, light tires, etc. Still don't know how anyone could get some of the planes to come out at the listed weights, but I generally use bigger motors then whats required anyway.

RC, I don't want to rain on your parade or unduly alarm you, but I feel obligated to warm people about the horrible quality and reliability of those engines you are using. I would toss them as hard as I could out into Lake Erie. Those RCG/RCGF 26s are some of the absolute worst engines on the market. I know from experience that they will fail on you in one way or another eventually. Here's my experience with the junk carb:

Here's another guy's experience with the quality of the materials:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11558496/tm.htm
Those are just two examples out of many. Like I said, I hate being the bearer of bad news since you've obviously spent your hard earned money on them already, but I'd rather you have all the information you need to make a decision. On a twin, you definitely need reliability. You won't get any form of it from those engines.

These are from yesterday... she's got DLE20's w/ 14X9X3 MA... they spin WOT @ 9K and idle at 2100... Airtronics SD10G helps with dual throttle servos. Sierra Giant retracts... she takes a beating and keeps flyin... I have high speed passes over 120MPH... she's fast on landings but a dream to fly in the air... plenty of power.
that last pic was from yesterday... doh!

Iit's with a very heavy heart that I report that my BF 110 suffered a spectacular crash on Sunday... I had 2 great flights Sunday, each about 5 minutes long.
On the third flight i lost radio control of the plane on the upwind leg at over 100MPH. When i lost radio control the plane was trimmed and at about 60% throttle less than 50feet off the deck... It continued under power to climb to about 400 feet and then wing over behind the flightline and crash at over 100MPH at a 30degree angle less than 50 feet away from cars in the parking lot. Shrapnel from the plane hit and damaged 3 cars in the lot... no one was hurt physically.
I fly with an Airtronics SD10G radio and had an 8Channel rcvr. Just for clarification I had a smart fly sport plus with dual 2100Mah LiFe packs. All Hitec 5645's and JR digital hi-torque servos. The antenna leads were approx. 8 inches apart in the fuse with the tips at 90degrees and nowhere near any power or servo leads.
The impact was so violent that the cases on both DLE20's were broken open to expose the crank, etc. The impact also bent my Robart 1/2inch struts and bent the Sierra Giant retracts. I'll post pics when i get them from a club photographer...

Sparky, Sorry to hear of your mishap, they say each airplane has a stamp on it of that date.. Glad to hear there were no injury's. we had a similar incident at my club this pass weekend, a airplane went out of control and slammed into the pavement so fast and hard the aluminum spinner shattered in small pieces and flew all over.

I got another test flight in on my 110 this weekend, my buddy Jim in the club flew it this time. I got in on video if anyone wants to watch.
The flight had me worried in couple spots, Jim told me that he applied some rudder on the turns and it caused the 110 to tuck under and go into a death spiral (almost). I am going to pull out the new RCG 26cc engines, I want to sell them if anyone is interested at like $115 each shipped free. I want bigger three blade prop and probably install some 30cc engines. url of video http://youtu.be/Gmj09-wvql4

You can check out a video of mine on the WTW 2012 RCU e-Magazine article that Ken Isaac did. The video shows take off, basic flying and a less than perfect landing, but that was only my third or fourth flight and I was still getting used to her.
Get one in your hanger!
