Hey guys...

Well the snow is melting and long with it are the chances of flying the 51 this season despite significant work on it these past few months.

Next season it is...

In the meantime I've dry-fit Leo Spychalla's cowl, been working on engine stand-offs (along with the design/program to custom machine them) and installing the engine/boring holes in the firewall.

I hope your projects are coming along.

Cheers

Goose

Hey guys...

Quick update for a Friday night then back to the workshop for more...

Pic 1. Stoked that I fit the entire engine in the cowl* and after shimming it, the fit of the nose cone.
Pic 2. Side profile shows there is still much to do with shaping (top & bottom) to get the flow (chin block missing).
Pic 3. Had to throw the static prop on
Pic 4. There is very little room to build my scale & functioning exhaust but it has to go in there!
Pic 5. I've decided to build the air duct in two pieces and from fibreglass.

* Unfortunately not including the spark plug & cap.

The rest of the weekend will be designing the exhaust and air duct and possibly getting to building the duct mold which is next on the list.

Have a great weekend...

Goose

So I got the mold for the air intake duct done and glassed this weekend.

I used a 3D model to work the concept out in my head but made the mold by hand from green foam.

I'll let it set up a couple of days before getting it fitted.

Cheers

Looking good, Goose. It'll fly when it's ready... we can wait.

That's lucky John because even with daily work on it, it's still a ways off...

Cheers!

Yes of course! Almost paranoid about it. I've seen one of these still fly (amazingly) at 36lbs!

I'm aiming at 25lbs max.

We'll see

Simply you will need to build a frame for the 'glass' to sit on (scale if you wish) and once attached to the glass you split it at the closing seam. Glue the front piece to the fuselage and create rails for the rear piece to slide on. Many use ball links inside brass channel and I think there are people selling these as a kit.

Use the scale rear slot to make an arm for your actuator (usually air ram but servo works too) and you are good to go.

Good luck

Goose
Thanks for the info Goose I will try to attempt a frame out of a couple layers of 5oz cloth then attempt the mechanism to open and close. I have rails that I purchased from Nick Ziroli Plans that I think will work just fine. Thanks again will stay in touch with progress.

Hey guys...

Remember me? Nah, didn't think so

So flying season for 2015 is over and building season begins. I won't bore you with everything that has happened in the last gap, let's just get to it.

I put the wing on the bench this week and worked out the geometry for the flaps and the RDS system. With some giggery-pokery I think it will work.

The to-do list is long, I'll update you as we go... feel free to ask questions/set me straight.

Cheers!

Goose

Goose,
As your build progresses, let us know how the RDS system works out for you.

Thanks,
paul

Thanks Chris...

I am, I am! *lol* The only distractions this building season are a 1/3rd scale Decathlon recover and a ProX260 repair, but that's it, promise!

Cheers Paul..

I've used the RDS system successfully in other aircraft and love the 'no external horns' look. It can be a little tricky to setup the geometry needed but worth it in my book.

Weekly update:

Pic 1: Finished up the elevators & trim tabs to the point I can move on.
Pic 2: I really don't like how wrong the shape of the radiator/oil cooler inlet is. I tried to leave it... couldn't
Pic 3: Used the NAA drawings to create a template and bolted it to the intake assembly.
Pic 4: Got brutal with the disc sander.

I reinforced the inside corners of the intake as I sanded through it. Next I plan to bog and shape it and see if it's good enough and rugged enough.

All this to avoid making a plug, mould and new glass parts. Still might have to

Also fuel proofed the firewall, fuel tank bay etc.

Cheers!

Goose

Thanks Chris...

On to some more difficult parts; design and build of the exhaust system. Plan is to machine the exhaust manifold to fit the Spychalla cowl and then TIG weld the exhaust stubs in place. All sounds easy when you say it quickly

I bought a Keleo exhaust for this project and while it is a great solution, it no longer fits with all the mods and the RA DL55 without significant work. Having said that, it's for sale if anyone is interested.

Cheers for watching.

Hey Goose, good to see you back on the horse (Mustang)! I do like the scoop you have modelled, are you making a batch up of them as I would like to get hold of one!
Don't worry about the weight too much, my TF 51 that is my "sport" scale model is 25lbs flying on a Zenoah 38 and my scale P51 weighs 32lbs with a 3W 55i in it! Both fly great, you just need a slightly longer runway for the heavier model so that I can settle her in softly!!

Hi Cary...

Re: scoop. No, it's a one-off. I guess once it's destroyed after the first wheels-up landing, I'll consider making a mold and run some though

Thanks a lot for the info on weight, that makes me feel better!

Now that I've made the front end (ok, all of this) overly complicated and difficult, there is plenty of 'figuring' going on
