bomberfield 25th anniversary don smith b29 build thread
next year will be the 25th anniversary for the b17 and giant scale fly in at bomberfield. so, i thought it was time i built a bomber. i picked the b29 for several reasons. the first being, you dont see as many. they appear to fly well. i love to use flite metal and this is a great canvas for that type of finish. any tips from experienced builders of this kit will be greatly appreciated. i have read over some of the build threads and have taken notes. my kit came from precision kit cutters.
here are a couple of pics of some of my metal work.

now to the build. lots of plans. very large too. the fuse is pretty basic. formers, a few stringers and plank work. i added a secondary spine before and aft of the wing spine for strength and to help pull the long fuse straight before planking.

Barry:
Looking forward to the build thread.
If you're building it, we can assume it's gonna be awesome. I think you'll find these 4-engine babies to be a lot of time and a lot of work, so there's some performance pressure for ya.
Two of my good friends are B-29 builders/flyers. One flies TWO: a regular Don Smith and an "expanded" Don Smith with 14+ ft wingspan.
How is the whole Bomber Field thing gettin' along?
Both my friends have attended (and placed) in past years and could probably be talked into making the long trek again if the event is robust as it used to be.
I am also a new convert to "The Bomber Side." I have a "trainer" 10-ft Westcraft B-17, and a gorgeous barely flown Wingspan 1/9 scale I could be talked into bringing

mark, please come join us next year for the event. bomber is doing great. this years event was bigger then any the last ten years. we will be expanding the parking for next year too. the model show for the special needs kids really got us a lot of press coverage. that event is going to be expanded too. the field is in top condition. 2013 is the year of the bomber!

Kram, anyone is lucky to have a "Westcraft B 17". I flew a big Westcraft 10' bomber this year for the first time because I was asked to. Very surprised how easy it was to fly . Rudder and throttle management was necessary but not as bad as I thought. Patience is the key as these things respond and fly very slowly and scalelike. Very gratifying when you succesfully fly a giant like this. I'll do it again anytime. Good luck to you all! Paul

We better be careful not to hijack Barry's thread here.
My Westcraft was built in 1989 by Dwayne Fosseen: I bought it from him as a "trainer" for my bigger one, and I've had a lot of coaching from several different bomber experts. So far, 72 flights by me. It's fuel-soaked and war-weary, but I've grown quite fond of it. Sure would be nice to get a big bunch of bombers up in the air at the same time.
We got these 5 plus a Wellington up simultaneously at Owatonna last year
If well-coordinated, we could take off as many up as possible in a standard 8-10 minute flight window, then land in the same sequence.

planking is finished on the first side. now to the other half. once i glued the bulkheads in place i added a small brace across the seam of the two bulkeads. just give it a little more strength. i think the wings will be a left and a right that just plug into the fuse via a wing tube. therefore, i added some plywood to the bulkheads where the wing will attach. also, lots of triangle stock. barry

she is moving along at a nice pace. i think what i will do for landing gear doors, bombay doors etc is to pull molds of the model and make them out of fiberglass. simple to do and they want have a tendancy to warp. barry
