If it's really complete, anything south of $4,000 is a real steal.

This is turning out like the "Mythical" Spitfires found in Burma. No photographs as of late...

I wonder if there was a reason why they never produced the P-38?

Anyone know the year of this plane? 1980 or so?

I would guess the aircraft would be around the same size that Yellow has now.

The kit was from 1987 and it was to be 32-35 lbs. I was hoping to find out personally if able to buy the kit and was sold site unseen. Just really cool that it remained untouched all those years. I have a few warbird kits that are the same way. Just not the P-38 kit.

I recently found this picture of the striking back show. It appears there is a p-38 crashing into the byron mustang. Very possible this might be one of the rare birds??

A little disapointed. We still don't even know what the wing span was to be on this version.

True -Byron never put the P-38 into production-but I produced a set of plugs from the original Byron molds--should be a great future project!--just the center section measures 50 inches

I'll pull out the drawings on the full scale and compare the center section to get the span

Looks great-wing span is smaller than I thought it would be-but I'm not against bumping it up a little from scale to help with wing loading-always imagined using a couple of G-62s--but there are so many options these days-----Thanks for the pics

Wonder if it would be worth scaling up the plugs I'd like to do a 12 ft span-anyone know the largest kit ever made?

If you're going to scale up and start fresh with new plugs then you might as well start over with an accurate set of drawings and do a better job than Byron did with the scale outline. Just my .02 cents of course but the Byron P-38, as with most of their stuff, was sport scale at best. Largest P-38 kit that comes to mind was the (if memory serves) 122" CBA kit. Actually, I think the scale span was a bit less but they offered it with a "sport" wing as well which was the 122 incher.

Thanks for the info on the other models--makes sense to correct the plug at that stage of the game-why not?--still like the idea of a 12 ft model

I heard Lockheed was ok with that sort of thing -but it was Boeing that wanted a piece of the action.-Don't know how true it is?

Looking through the old post, brings back memories, I know both pilots well! I know the P-38 flew the next day in the show.

There wasn't a kit manufactured by Byron. There was a silver prototype built for display, never flew.
They layed up two sets of glass parts for striking back show. The first was was built and flown in Ida Grove the last two years the show was there, and then it flew at Ankeny Show for a couple of years. It was damage the last air show day when the gear collapsed and it hit a safety fence.
The construction of the second one was started as a back up plane, but never finished.
The first one weighted in at 65lbs., 4.2 sach for power, flew well two different times on a single engine.
