I had to lay down to get this one.

That little door to the right is the one that I didnt get a picture of from the inside. It was sitting about that height when I was inside it at Chino in 2012, I think they are using the same stand. It sure took a beating on the belly, all that damage occurred after they pulled it from the swamp, its very fragile from just below mid level down.

So looking forward to seeing it. Will it be in a booth? Will be my first time to Toledo, but my friend has been there several times including having his own booth there. Be prepared to be drilled by him, he owns the B-17E we are restoring.

Cal,

I shared pictures from this thread with the head of renovations at Ford Island as we were walking the old girl. He was thoroughly impressed to say the least! He could not believe what you had done! He then shared one of Swamp Ghosts stories with me.

...when Swamp Ghost was hit by AA, the compartment with the life raft was hit and came open. The liferaft inflated, and promptly caught on the left horizontal. The captain ordered the left waist gunner to shoot it off the tail. You can see where the 50 calibers tore into the skin on the left horizontal during the process. Pretty cool... I meant to take the pictures but totally forgot as I was lost in the story lol

great work Cal, and those words fall way short...

acdii,

Chino was not a kind place to Swamp Ghost, most of her cast part were stolen while there(as well as about anything else that could be taken easily). For instance all of the aft cowl parts were removed(stolen) from all engines(cowl flaps area). Pretty sad really.

Yeah, I could see the door you were needing, but to get even the pic I posted it required laying on the ground and holding the camera under the plane. There was just no way to reach your door.. .

If anyone is interested, the Memphis Belle is at the National Air Force Museum in Dayton. It can be seen by taking the rehab tour. She is not quite done buy a beautiful sight. All kinds of other projects underway. Worth the trip and the time. It is sad how she was treated after the war until she was found. Enjoy.

I have had a good run in the hobby but the this one put me into retirement. The bomber will be picked up today around 3 p.m. and from that point on I will officially be retired . I would like to thank everyone I have met over the years and the new friends I have made have been great. The time lost away from my family has really helped make this decision. Once again thanks to everyone and don't forget to drop your gear before touch down.

Thanks Cal! You really gonna fly that masterpiece? I think you should bring it to Denver this summer and donate it to the local museum! Absolutely stunning craftsmanship.
