Another Skyshark P-40
Just picked one of these up nib for a great price. Got the desert camo version. Going with a DLE 55 for power, power HD 1501's for servos and Sierra gear. Did some reading and it looks like the only mod guys were doing was reinforcing the wing dowel mounts. Also know I have to relieve the wing tube for the retracts to fit. Is there anything else I might have missed that someone who has built the plane might know? Has anyone tried modifying the canopy to look like a "E" model?

so true about the canopy. It is very brittle. I bought a new replacement canopy and cowl but before I put it on I totalled the plane. Sigh brand new canopy and cowl still in box lol.

The firewall needs to be screwed and glassed. Here is a Skyshark "N" canopy made to an earlier model "Flying Tiger" scheme. Precision Eagle 70cc powered. Paul

Plan on adding nose weight up front to balance with a DLE 55. I have a G62 in mine with the elevator servos in the tail, rudder servo up front with pull-pull, and had to add nose weight. If memory serves, I added 1 lb of lead in the cowl. If you do add weight in the cowl then beef up the screw attachement area. Actually a couple of layers of glass in the cowl is a good idea since the cowl is pretty flimsy anyway.

Here is another one I have with the stock canopy and"Pearl Harbor" color scheme. BME 50 power. The "Flying Tiger" scheme has turtle deck modified with the stock canopy cut in half. ccostant, keep an eye on that firewall box. Hope you did some beefing up in that area! Paul

If you plan on reworking for another p40 model, the topflite GS canopy fits! I have an extra Skyshark and when I get to building that I am going to make it a e model. I have the rcs 50cc with a 20 x10 xoar prop in my one i fly now and it rips through the sky. Right now I am custom building a Skyshark for a friend, and am putting the GS Robarts in it. A friend custom made gear mounts so they can be used. Good thing since the GS Sierra gear is sometimes hard to find.

I hear ya Meschmidt, your P-40's look great. I dd a complete bash on my P-40. Reinforced the firewall and tank compartment, stripped the wing down, beefed up the wing dowels, reglued as much as I could in the wing, sheeted the bottom of the wing, changed the wing tips to be more scale and glassed it. Replaced the gear pods with Top flite P-40 pods. Changed the exhaust to Rob Pike's exhaust. Repainted the entire plane. Here's couple of pics after the bash.

I plan on trying 2 different props on my G-62 P-40; The first is an APC 20x12. The second is a Zinger 20x8-14. I have been told these will really move any plane with a G-62 along quite well. The manufacturer's spec sheet on the G-62 shows a 10,000 rpm range so 12 to 14 inches of pitch should be interesting. I have read that the racing prop for the AT-6 class is an APC 20x15 and the engine is a stock G-62 so there is a precedent. My pylon racing past is always haunting me.....

Another thing to do to this bird is to add 2 degrees right and 2 degrees down thrust. This really helps the takeoff and landings. Running engine straight makes it a wild weasle on the ground and pulls to left badly. Downthrust makes the approach much smoother with less ballooning on flare.

Mine has a DLE 55 and weighs 21.5 lbs. I did not have to add any extra weight to the nose to get the CG correct. Both elevator servos are back in the tail but the rudder and tailwheel are pull/pull cables. I agree with adding right/down thrust...this thing has a wicked left turn tendency on takeoff.

Your going to have to build up behind the seat to make the e model so the canopy will work
