OKAY LET ME ANSWER THE QUESTION EVERYONE HAS ASKED FROM THE START ABOUT THIS BUILD: HOW MUCH DOES IT WEIGH????
I put it on the scale the way it is in the first photo w/ no engines 12 LBS. 12 OZ.
I'LL WEIGHT IT AGAIN WHEN I HAVE HELP ALMOST DROPPED HER DOING IT BY MYSELF.
I think I has said 18 lbs for finished weight there's no tail feathers, fuel tanks, cowlings or engines in that weight; but I don't think I'll go over 18 LBS.
I did some more on the pieces parts: finished the second clip beefed up both of them and drilled one clip plate; I need some small drill bits,
Store trip tomorrow, after my MRI ...Looks like I'm going to have rotator cuff surgery?
Not much done today very detailed work; I'm waiting to solder the top bracket until I get the correct angle, and I still need to make 2 of the top parts that hold the upper part of the locking pins.

OKAY I have some more pieces parts this should help those of you who still can't see where I'm going w/ this.
But there's still a few more pieces to make before I will install; this is the prototype strut mount plus the top mount for the beaching gear.

The wheels came in today and I figured out the upper strut fitting; it's not exactly scale but close, I had to solder thepieces w/ the pins in there holes to get a perfect line up.
These pieces are not finished just soldered rough filed.
This drawing shows the next part I'll make the wheel hubs & axels.
I think these wheels should work fine for this display set of beaching gear, the large main
wheels are 2" the aft wheels are 1".

Well on the PBY's beaching gear I made some more progress today; there's still some bugs to work out and a few more pieces parts needed for the wheel attachment, but the general idea seems to work, have a look.

Well I made some more progress today ; there's still some more details I can add but I want to get the second beaching gear oleo caught up to the first before moving on w/ more details.
And also I want to get the other three Struts mounted to the fuse; and all four mounted to the wings.
It may not seem like I've done much but this is harder than it looks there's quite a few Variables involved with the mounting; angle, pitch, yaw, height and pin alignment.

After seeing pictures of your work on both the airplane and the canoe, I'd really like to see how your pies turned out!
Which brings me to my next point... You really need to change your signature line, you're a true craftsman and a master of all of your crafts. I started following this thread a little late but am watching and reading intently now.
One reason I have been really interested in this thread is the PBY is a plane I've always wanted to build. I really wanted the Westcraft plans for the 14 footer but those are hard to come by these days. The fella who bought the rights tried to get me a set but said the originals were too far deteriorated to reproduce. So I bought the Vintage plans you're working with along with the vacuum formed parts. Recently I've found a 1:8 scale set of plans that makes a 13' PBY so I think I'll be starting that sometime in '15. Hopefully. Even though they're different plans I'm getting a lot out of following your build. Thanks for documenting it so well.
One question, where did you get the shaped strut material for the wing struts?
Thanks again, Bruce. Keep it up!

And if you really want to build the larger PBY-5a version let me know and I give you a link.
Here's where you can find the Alum Strut tubing.

Good luck w/ your build and please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Randy thank you so much for your kind words..Will you be building the PBY-5 or the PBY-5a?

The 5A. I've always had a romance for amphibious flying boats. Particularly the Duck, PBY-5A and Grumman Goose. My build won't be starting for a few months. I need to build a new workbench first to accommodate the behemoth. I'm thinking of building a magnetic building system, thoughts? I've heard a lot of good and not much bad. There's also a lot of merit to the old pin-board too. Anyway, I'd love to have the link to whatever it is... I already have the plans and gear for it (I'm not quite as crafty as you... yet!) and I've found a build on RCSB of the exact same plans but it has been stalled for a couple of years. I've also been in contact with another fella in MO whose father has built one and he will be doing the finish work on it. The plans and gear are Sturla's out of Iceland.
Cheers!

A swede named Goran (sweeper). He's going to make it electric.
http://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum/...093&PN=1&TPN=1
The last update on his build was October 12, 2012! I posted asking what the status was and he said he got distracted with other projects.
Why did you decide to go with the Vintage vs Sturla's? Size? Comparing the two sets of plans it appears Sturla's is a little more scale. Just some of the curves on Sturlas that aren't as pronounced as the Vintage plans.

Well moving forward: today I readied the wing struts w/ there inner pieces parts and shaped the escutcheon plates out of 1/16' ply; I changed my mind on how I'll be doing these escutcheon plates.
Once I have these as far as I can go, I'll go back to the second oleo and finish it while waiting on the screws and brass inserts.
Lunch time,
Bruce

Well while in between looking for a shoulder surgeon and getting the MRI photos today I tried my hand at making an escutcheon for the strut that gets the beaching gear; don't judge to harshly this is the first one of these I've done this way, still some tweeking yet to do

Okay I was able to get a lil bit done today
The flange / fairing around the strut needed some tweeking and sanding so the pin would go through and attach THE BEACHING GEAR to the fuse.
To give it a tighter fit I mixed up some more epoxy w/ microballoons and applied a small amount to the back side and pressed it in place on the plane w/ a sheet of plastic taped it in place pulled tight.
And I put a screw in the brass plate to pull it tight to the fuse where I inset it flush w/ the fuse skin, and shot a few coats of primer on the fairing.
Check it,
Bruce

Okay guys here's what I've been up to; there's a few that don't see how I'm going to
connect this strut at the top into the wing's bottom.
I'm using 4-40 brass inserts w/ a hex drive counter sunk 4-40 machine screw; the screws are drilled through the top of the strut where I added that 1/16" thick piece of Alum.
Then counter sunk into the epoxy / microballoons fairing ; the brass inserts were epoxy glued in to the wing.
I put a piece of paper towel in the inside threads, so not to get any glue in there then some 3 &one oil on the threads of the screw.
I then put it together w/ the epoxy WET to make sure the brass inserts had the proper angle while drying.
three more to do; they should be faster all parts are made now except a few more solder joints on the other oleo.
Check it,

Looking Good, Too Good, your putting us all to shame for slacking off and just buying ARF's when we use to enjoy building from scratch.
Thanks for keeping the dream alive.
