RE: The 2013 Toledo show
Well back from Toledo and the Weak Signals Show but I did not buy a single thing. Went to Propshop on the way home and spent my money. The swap shop was terrible same guys sitting in the same spots when I was last there in 2005. Except it’s much smaller. Many vendors from the past were notably absent. Mostly arfs and more and more electrics. I did run into a lot of old friends most of them noticed the changes as well. I don't know if I will go every year though.

I was there too, about the same report, and I have not been upstairs in a long time. We not a lot a models in the show yet, Mike Barbees's new T-34B, big and nice, a nice BAE Hawk, A-4. Also, after going to about thirty of these things, I wll also admit, that I have a new leader in the clubhouse for the title of, "Biggest POS I Have Ever Seen at Toledo". It was an e-powered B-36, made of foam, and balsa, horribly inaccurate, and it looked like he brushed it with Model Master silver and red. That is my report!

Some good pics starting to filter in at RCG, including the aforementioned Peacemaker. Or is that "Piece-maker"? Just kiddin', couldn't help myself. The all black F-86 is magnificent!

Scarey part Chad, the POS-PM looks better in that pic than it did in person. One thing I do always like about Toledo though is buying supplies, epoxy, screws, etc. Got my supplies on Friday.

I was there today, attendance seemed down and definetly missing vendors.
There were a few nice models on display but there were also empty spaces on the display tables. Everything was strung out and there were still empty spots.
I was able to score some good deals from the vendors, bought batteries, sevo's, servo leads, Robart Hinges, fuel dots and one Big ***** prop. Prices were already low but the vendors were also willing to bargain when buying multiple items. I saved more than enough money to pay for the 400 mile round trip.
Later!!

RE: The 2013 Toledo show
Just got back from Toledo. Not competeing this year, so I had time to spend just visiting with those I do busness with. And some folks I would like to. Had a wonderful visit with Antonio at Authentic Scale Engines. What a piece of art!!!! Got a peak at the full scale drawings of his upcoming Merlin as well. WOW is not sufficient. Also had great dicusions with Balsa Dynmics, War Bird Pilots, Klass kote paints, and a host of others. I got to spend the most time with my friends at Down & Locked, going out to dinner with them. A very enjoyable day and evening.
I have many pictures to share, but RCU is really screwed up right now. As soon as I can I will post pictures of the war birds I was.
The competeing aircraft this year seemed fewer in numbers as others have noted. Some very nice builds just the same.
Had no time to go upstairs.
I was able to visit with Rick Hamel and get a close look at his new bat jet. Would not be surprised to see him take best of show again. What a creative and inovative man he is.
I also was able to fill about 3/4 of my shopping list, and found a few other things I had not thought of.
More when I can post pictures, soon I hope.

This plane was a mystery to me. This is a 15 ft table, and 0 ft for craftsmanship. This plane is a 200 ft plane at best. Maybe a fun project and could fly great, but certainly not contest worthy.
This was at one end of the table, and the Avenger was at the other. One extreme to the other for sure.

Guys,
No offense meant but we have to start somewhere. Maybe not the best time or place, and I did not see it in person, but why not? I think we should encourage any builders of any kind, or we will be out of kits and stuck with nothing but ARFs.
You would not like my first attempts, I promise! Uggggllly.... He he.

Encouraging building is one thing.. encouraging building to the lowest common denominator is another. If you saw the plane in person you might think. is this whet static display has come to?
I don't know who the builder was .. maybe it was a youngster which is fine.

Very good points. There are better time and places to display first time attempts, or those of newer builders, than at a national level event.
I'm just hoping to encourage more folks to take the building plunge, not to accept an ARF that looks like everyone else's.

RE: The 2013 Toledo show
Just to back up the statement that this ship not only stood out, but as I said earlier this model holds a unique place in my years of going to Toledo. Thing may fly great, but I have always held this shows static display as the place I went to see the best and learn a few things. In 99.9% of all the aircraft, boats and cars I have seen, this shows entries are some of the best builds I have ever seen, and that continues. I got third once in Sailplanes, and was pretty happy with that.

RE: The 2013 Toledo show
All I know is there was too much electric and foam there for me to enjoy it too much. Sorry, but it seems that the hobby is going away from building and towards ARF foamies. I am NOT knocking anyone that flies them, but lots of places are selling this kind of stuff now, leaving little room for builders. In another 5 years going to Toledo will be like walking into a toys-r-us.

RE: The 2013 Toledo show
Thank you for the posts and thoughts on this. I respect everyone for their right to an opinion.
Anyone who has been on this site for awhile, and is a scale builder, or admires scale building and enjoys building threads, particularly of war birds, know how I feel about encouraging others in building better airplanes. I spend a lot of time doing these threads that could be spent in the shop in the solitude of building. I sacrifice some of my time to this end. I do this because I have always appreciated others who do the same thing so that guys like me could learn and polish our skills, so I do what I can to pass it along. We our living in a society that has adopted an entitlement mentality. We agonize over hurting someones 'feelings' even when that person has little concern for ours. How about my feelings, and the pride we take in a competition like this? The hundreds of hours and all the expense on getting our labors of love right, down to the smallest detail, to be worthy of competition. Indeed, museum scale quality is what we all strive for, to feel our entries are worthy of a competition like the Toledo competition. It is insulting to me for someone to think that an effort like the plane in question is worthy to be judged along side these works of art. It is like displaying toddler finger painting along side the works of Rembrandt, and charging people to see it. Yes, we all pay to get in this show. It will be an even bigger slap in the face if any of the magazines choose to use pictures of this plane in the coverage of the event.
I anchorage model builders who aspire to a level of building worthy of competition to study planes like that wonderful Avenger, or Mike Barbee's T-34, and other fine examples of true craftsmanship. Don't fall for societies attitude that you have a right to whatever you do however you want to do it, and we all need to accept it. Our standards are high at an affair like this, and frankly, so should be yours.
Sorry, this scale builder does not have to accept poor scale quality in a national scale contest. It does not belong. If your planes don't need to be scale, that is fine, really, it is way fine. Have tons of fun building and flying them. I really have no interest in seeing them paraded at a scale contest posing as a work of art like most of the other entries are.
Toledo is a special event for me. Next year I will be back with what I hope is a worthy contestant. It will be a Meister Zero and I intend to bring all the craftsmanship that I, and my brother, can muster on her. It will take long hours and will be a considerable investment. I will share the experience in the forums as I always do, form the building to the competition, all the way to Top Gun I hope. It will be a pleasure to share the table next year with other like efforts. I have little respect for those who have no respect for that kind of an effort.
