I grew up in Tucson and lived close to Davis Monthan which had one of the largest boneyards in the world. Rumors were always around that at the end of WWII you could purchase new planes at Kingman for little money; eg; P-51 $1500 fully loaded with fuel (no guns) P-38 $2500, etc etc. SUpposedly, one entrapeneur bought a fleet of B-25s and fighters for $500K, sold the gasoline in them, stripped radio gear and scrapped and sold the planes for the aluminum and made a very healthy profit. What a shame to lose all those beautiful planes. Can you imagine what a fleet of vintage warbirds would be worth now?
