Default 19' B-17

Found this.

http://youtu.be/9owlwlxJxPw

Aluminum overcast:

The plane really ate up the width of this field as you can see. It takes off with all 4 engines running, but soon looses one. It weighs in at 187 lbs.

Beautiful! It's great to see all his buddies out there supporting him too and genuinely happy that he had a successful flight. I need to find some of those..... [&o]

I agree, looked like a good group of buddies backing him up on this one. Quite the well earned celebration!

Great enthusiasm...we used to have a great group of guys like this; it is hard to come by. Many are gone; some have left hobby, moved, passed on or ?....we still have a good small group, but I miss the old large group that used to get toghether like this for a maidens/flying. It was good times.

Great support for this modeler on a very nice B-17.

Agree Jeff, It was/is great to see that.

Been on both sides, the flyer/builder/assembler and watching someone elses pride and joy go up succesfully, and sometimes not[]

Really the best part of the video!

Agree Roger. The builder was pumped and excited, but I bet his buddies had as much, if not more, to do with that excitement. Good for hiim!

Wow! that was one fine maiden. I think I could hear his knees knocking in Minnesota, Beer's and all! Congrats Sir...
P.S what kind of hand starter was he using to start those engines? It seemed very small and powerful

Jason,
Mac Hodges makes a nice compact starter (he needs it for his 20' B-29 which has DA-100's).
He makes them in his shop.

Wow, there was not a lot of room for mistakes on that runway... what a great job of it , from beginning to end.

I'm impressed, especially flying from that runway, not a lot of room for error to the right, and it's not clear to me how far away those power lines were! This is an impressive feat of building and flying. Nice to see the support he got at beginning and end of the flight.

One observation. This seemed to both be a maiden flight of what must be a plane requiring certification, and a flight at an event of some sort?

Those would seem to be a contradiction? I'm just asking for understanding about large model flight practices in Europe as they seem to be ahead of us in the USA in terms of popularity of large models.

I expect the "event" may have been the maiden of the B-17.

Or, the certification was being held prior to the event perhaps...

As excited as they all were, you would've thought that was the Boeing Team maidening the 299. Hats off to those guys!!!! Its not quite big enough for guys like Jeff Q. Merlin, Paul L. Carl H. Mac etc. That thing would be SWEEEET at Warbirds Over Delaware.

Excellent footage. Thanks for sharing

3-D perspective difficult, but seemed like quite a short runway and tangled overfly for such a large plane.

Also, B-17's are relatively easy to fly engine-out, but it does require some careful rudder and throttle management. I'm impressed he did it so well after only two or three minutes getting used to the plane.

His buddies' support certainly seemed sincere and heart-warming, but may have had some bi-carbon fragment assistance

There seem to have been a number of maiden flights done there that day. They are all impressive!
