What ever happened to even scales? .76, Yikes!

Here is why I was asking. This particular plane will fly on the 7-77 radial, so in "theory", a B-25 or P-61 of the same scale "should" be able to fly on a pair of then, but that doesn't always work out. A 1/8th scale B-25 comes out around 40#, so a 1/5th could be closer to 60#. A 1/7th scale P-61 needs 40-50CC gas to fly well. I would have loved to put a pair of 7-35 radials on it, but not enough power. In the full scale planes, the Corsair, B-25 and P-61 used practically the same 18 cylinder engines. They weren't identical, B-25 used the R-2600, the Corsair and P-61 the R-2800. So in scale, the same engine should be able to fly all three, but that doesnt really work out does it.

From the way it looks now, the plane is scaled to fit the engine, and not the other way around. Make an engine that can pull a plane of this weight, then design the planes scale around the engine. Is that what others are seeing?

I'm pretty sure two 777 radials will fly a 50 pound plane with out great difficulty. It's a bomber not a fighter for starters. So speed isn't important. If you use the calculus of 1 hp per 10 pounds you end up needing 5 hp of thrust.
I have see the 777 fly a FW 190 that was 30 plus pound. It was decent performance. Could it have been better? For a fighter maybe yes. But it was pretty scale looking.

The 777 wont fit the 1/8th scale B-25, nor the 1/7th scale. If they would fit 1/7th I would consider them for the P-61. The diameter of the 777 is 9.1, the cowl on the 1/7th B-25 is 8 -9 ", so it wont fit. It would have to be 1/5th scale to fit properly, and at that size, It is more than likely nearing the 100 pound range.

I finally got the second flight in on my Corsair. The repaired/replaced electric gear worked great. Flies heavy. Keep some speed up on landings. All was good. I like a little more aileron throw than the low rates recommend. Thinking back, I think I flew the first flight with everything on high and didn't think it was too much.

Hey Nick, congrats on the 2nd flight. You and I have been on a couple of builds together. Didn't you build the Hanger 9 Ferocious Frankie with me years ago? Anyway, I pulled the trigger on one of these F4U's from my local Hobby store. He's saying late June. I'm not going to have the luxury of a fancy radial engine. But I am considering my old tried and true ZDZ 80. Should do the job. I'm also staying with Robart pneumatic retracts. I have used the electric from Robart and I'm using them right now on a Top Flite FW 190, and they work great. The only place I've ever seen guys having problems with the electric is on the Corsairs for some odd reason. Anyway, you guys are all awesome, I've pretty much read the whole thread........Lot's of good info here.

Yes. I went through three H9 "Frankies": one mid-air, one mysterious roll-over into the ground, and sold the third. I now have a TF GS P-51 that I glassed and painted in the same FF scheme. It flies great. I had it at WBOR two years ago. I just hope these electrics keep working !!!

Hi Everyone

I Installed the first main retract in the wing centre section. Operated just fine. Put the wheel on, retracted the wheel. Heard a small crunching noise, now the retract does not cycle. I can hear the electric motor running in the retract but the worm drive is not turning. Have any of you guys experienced the same problem ?

Very dissapointed as i live in South Africa so returning the retract to Robart is a hassle for me. Also, now my faith in the retracts have been dented and in the back of my mind I am worrying that the other retract will suffer from the same affliction.

The Corsair had an uncommonly long gestation period. We sized it before we knew about the 7-77, which we acquired through partnership. The cowl diameter was driven by the large 3-cylinder Saito glow engine that preceded the FG-84.

Great feedback! Thank you David!
Will the tail hook option be available through HH sometime?

it looks like the tail wheel could simply be modified by replacing the rear hing pin with a longer pin to accommodate a hook. A small servo could be added to raise and lower it.

Anybody use a DA-60 on the ship? If so, what size standoff did you use? I'm going to pick up a blazing star unit if I can find the dimensions needed from firewall box to cowling front.

Finally, the maiden happened yesterday. All went well, except for the second flight when the motor stopped and had to do a dead stick landing. It felt like a carrier landing. No major issues.

And a video of the maiden...

It's the Evo 7-77 with a Keleo exhaust ring.
@kalzone
No problem with the retract. If it folded up it means it was not fully down and locked

First off... welcome to RCU!

I would love to see some pics or video of your set up. I'm big fan of the Eflite systems. It's nice to see that they have finally stepped up to larger sizes (with the 360). Could you share the details on your setup as well, what ESC and batteries are you running? Flight times?

Thanks a bunch!

Casey
