lol oh ****... you generally want some airspeed before yanking full up elevator I think wow... expensive lesson. At least it wasn't a kit build I guess? (trying to see some kind of positive haha)

The first thing I will do to my Corsair is strip the covering off and glass it. I will cover it in Flite Metal before painting it. Flite Metal will weigh about the same as primer but will allow me to simulate the spot welds on the fuse and the rivets and screws on the wing. This will be my winter project and I'll post photos as I go along.

Cool.

Now THAT will be a thread to subscribe to. I know you'll do a bang-up job of it, too.

it's a nice looking plane alright, but I'm old school and still prefer to build my own and that way I have a sense of it's structural integrity and not having to second guess who built it and if enough adhesive was used on parts that I can't see or get to, or once again who built it. Thanks but no thanks

Ashworthb a little hint. You need to get more distance of the front geardoor to the gear. when you landing and the gear will compress at the spring the geardoor will hit the black front screw. I did a little pice of wood in between and the door will be a bit more in front and the gear can compress at the spings wirthout touching the door. Sorry for my english but I hope you do know what I mean

Thanks Shawn. I was going to build the Top Flite kit with all of the mods but with my work schedule, it would have taken at least a year to go from opening the box to the maiden. I guess I'll put the kit and retracts up for sale. If anybody is interested in the TF kit and robart retracts, contact me and I'll give you a good deal.

Ashworth,

Wow! Nice work. How long did it take you to get it to that state? Also, is that the real speed of the FS retraction? Does your setup have an adjustment for speed?

Thanks for the tip. I will put a wood spacer between the gear and the door to allow space for the gear to compress without hitting the door. Thanks again.

Probably have about 20 hours invested in the doors and gear (getting the offset "Hidden Hinges" installed correctly was tricky). I'm using my DX18 Sequencer to control the gear and doors from a single switch and the speed of the retracts is not adjustable (they are Robart electric).

The Corsair arrived today. It didn't take long to unbox it. I spent about an hour removing the covering from the outer wing panels, fuse, and rudder. Still need to remove the covering from the horizontal stabs and the control surfaces. As you can see in the photos, the open bays in the outer wing panels and the solid areas of the rudder are represented. I haven't checked these features against documentation to see how accurate they are but I'm impressed that Hangar 9 made an attempt to represent these features. The wing tips are made from fiberglass. The upper rear section of the fuse from just in front of the vertical stab to the end of the fuse is also made of fiberglass. So far, the quality of what's under the covering has been good.

Hey guys received my Corsair. Sweet!

Couple questions... it seems like I have some minor scuffing and small impressions in the balsa sheeting on the wings, a bit of noticeable scuffing around the vertical stab/rudder area. It's nothing terrible, but I was kind of expecting/hoping to have a perfectly blemish-free ARF. The covering is applied nice and tight/smooth though so no complaints there. But; kind of looks a little like they forgot to use a nice soft mat to work on in the shop when covering the wings, and a bit of a rough job in one spot at the rear.

What's everyone else's experience?

Kirk,
it looks to be a good canvas to start with. Good luck with the completion.

I'd get one myself but have far too many other projects lined up.
cheers

Thanks Ron. I moved to Maryland in May and the wife and I have been doing some remodeling over the summer. I just finished an Air-C-Race L-29. At 105 inch wingspan, it's a fairly large model.

Thanks Peter. Yes, it is a good canvas to start with I plan to finish it in Roger Hendricks' scheme (the XO of VF-17).

Default Lucky Gallon

I posted this earlier, but it is now finished and nearly ready for a maiden. This is a post-war racer color scheme from Cook Cleland used in the Cleveland Air Races.

Actually painted on the fiberglass areas, Monokote on the open and some of the sheeted areas and graphic material for some of the burgundy areas and decals.
