H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
Well........Top Gun is over, and as many of you know it was a total bust under the Warbird Alley tent! 5 out of 6 of us smashed our airplanes. It wasn't pretty! Mine suffered an aileron servo slamming to one side causing my plane to roll towards the crowd of course. I was able to turn the nose towards the runway and sort of "pancake" her there. I will be able to fix the plane but I've decided to take a break from the super scale stuff and build an ARF. The P-47 is such an easy and wonderful airplane and with the airshow season on us, I want a "no-brainer" to fly.
I've looked into the Wingspan Retracts and I'm going to give them a shot. It is nice to not have to worry about air. The price seems to be good and they make a set just for this plane.

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
The first thing I decided to do was install the engine and the fuel tank. It is so much easier to center everything when you can set the plane up on its tail and move the engine around. I decided to go with a US 41CC. The engine range was between a 26CC and 40CC, so we will see. Plus, I had one laying around the shop. The tank fits very nicely in the nose and there is no extra building to fit it in. I know this plane is expensive (or at least more than others), but the quality is outstanding. I went ahead and mounted the throttle servo as well seeing that I was working on this area.

Going from one end of the airplane to the next, I decided to start the tail. When I build an ARF, I like to get the fuse. complete, then do the wings. Everything fit nice with no gaps, etc. I glued the tail on and then proceeded to mount the control rods. The lengths were right on and the servos fit perfectly in place.

I have the h9 150 sized mustang and am thinking of pulling the trigger on this one. I have 2 ESM birds, the corsair and fw190, and while I like the ESM warbirds the h9 is a nice built. What is you opinion of the 47 and the weight of it.

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
Hey Michael,
I've also built a bunch of ESM stuff. I never really pulled the trigger on H-9 because it was so much more for what I thought was the same thing. ITS NOT! The quality and fit of everything is so much better. The laser cutting and quality of the build is outstanding. I was worried about using a 41CC, but when I picked up the fuselage with the engine attached, I couldn't believe it. I have 90 size planes heavier. I was told that the wingspan retracts will fit perfectly. I'm waiting on those and we will see. I've heard good things about them and with all the cheap aftermarket stuff, I hope they live up to the hype. I'll let you know how they work.

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
I've been able to get some more done to the plane. For some reason, I didn't see any hardware such as the clevises, etc. However, I could have misplaced the bag. It isn't a big deal because I always put good hardware such as heavy duty dubro or great planes. I decided to just stick with what works for me. I solder a 4x40 clevis to a push rod with the other side made so I can screw the other one on. I did this step for both the aileron and the flap. I also couldn't wait and had to attach the pylon and bomb just to see.

I couldn't stop there. I had to attache the wings as well as the center fuel tank. Its pretty cool and very easy to install and take off. I also wanted to center the flaps. As usual, this plane goes together so nice. Everything fit.

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
Last picture for the night. I know that I'm going to get beat up from all my scale nut friends, but I've decided for now.....I will keep this one shiny. There! I said it. I NEVER leave a plane without extreme weathering, but I did say that I didn't want to do too much work on this one. However, with that said, I am keeping this one scale. I want to keep this one close to the real "Hun Hunter" that is flying today. Yes....she is shiny. One real easy way to add some detail and bring it back to life a bit is to add the hatches. With help from a 3 view, I've started this process. It is very easy. I am using "ducting tape" (not duck tape) for this process. It gives a nice contrast, and as I add the stickers on, some will show and some will be partially obscured. I think this will help the scale side in me screaming right now.

Well dang I never thought of using that stuff. It is shiny and can be easily cut to size. And it STICKS!! Great idea. This is why I love coming to these forums. I have mine on order. I will be using an evolution 35 GT that I have free and robart retracts.

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
Well it's a nice plane but it still irks me to no end that they never put the gear in the scale location on the P-47Why is that so hard? I modified my kit one to put it there and it was not that hard to figure out, you just need to put in a couple of sub spars just like the real one has. Sorry to see you bust up the nice 109

WarbirdFan,
I haven't gotten them yet, but when I do I'll post pictures of them. I saw a set and was very impressed. The real proof will be when I get them though!

I was able to do some more detail work on the 47 over the weekend. I have a huge assortment of number "0" screws and decided to add a bit more detail with them. There are a tone of pictures online of this plane so it was easy to figure out which ones had what.

Okay, so I can't stand the pitot tube that comes with this plane so with some of my own tubing and a bit of G-10, I made a real simple one. I used one size larger tube in the wing with a small earth magnet in the bottom. I then am able to simply slide the pitot tube in place and the magnets hold together for a great bond!

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
So its pretty much complete. All I will need to do is mount the gear when they arrive. I'm excited to have a simple plane that I can show up to the field with and fly the crap out of it. I decided (for now) to stick with the airshow style "shiny" plane. So far I am very happy with the looks. the small hatches really make it stand out.

So I don't have a cockpit in it yet and will soon. However, I'm not waiting on it to fly the plane. I found an old pilot bust in my shop that was "close" so, I stuck him in. It sort of works....

I got the retracts in from Wingspan Retracts and they look awesome. I was very excited that the quality was as good as robart if not better.

Pulling out the tail retract I felt the same. At first look, it looked like they just copied Robart because they "look" the same. However, upon closer inspection, there is a bunch of things different. I own a bunch of the robart tail wheels like this and you can see it is a total different design. Hope that works!

RE: H-9 P-47 with Wingspan Retracts
I wanted to get some videos up of the retracts.
This one is of the main retract:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRVYC...ature=youtu.be
This one is of the tail retract:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhaRp...ature=youtu.be
After I installed all of them, this is what they look like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO49A...ature=youtu.be
Now all I really need to do is make sure everything is secure and balance the plane. I want to put the inner gear doors on, but might wait until the plane has flown.

Hey PJ, (shameless plug to follow)
If you want to stick some rivets on the Jug I can set you up. I am offering laser cut rub-on rivets from clear vinyl which offer an easy solution for dressing up ARF's. You can see my rivets on the H9 Jug of "Splais" near the bottom of the page at the link below if you're interested.
