Hi AM6,

The Yellow glass is Polyester rather than epoxy. I used Hysol for installing most of the bulkheads in the cockpit area but for laying in some glass cloth reinforcement I think you would probably want to go with Polyester resin. You could use epoxy but I think you would get a better bond with Polyester. Anybody else have input on this?

Totally agree with Chad. Hysol works great for gluing dissimilar materials (plywood, metals, ...etc) to the polyester glass. Polyester resin is the way to go when adding more layers of fiberglass cloth. I like to add a few layers to the cowl to strengthen it up. And 9 times out of 10 you will need the extra weight up front to balance anyway. You can buy polyester resin at your local Walmart or any number of sources.

Chad/ccostant

Thank you.....polyester resin it is then.

I will just need to remember to be quick when applying it!
(as opposed to epoxy).

happy landings.

Been a long time without an update but work on the Spitty, while a bit hit or miss, has continued.

The stab is done to include the G10 gap seals and has been glassed. The elevators will be getting the fabric very soon.

I have finished the flap and aileron modifications to one wing panel and have made a start on the other. Much use has been made of G10 as can be seen. The aileron has been modified to the correct Freise type and is hinged in a scale manner.

Bottom view showing the new servo hatch locations. The small hole in front of the aileron is for access to the internal aileron actuator and will be closed up and glassed over when it's all finished.

The aileron gap shields were created with G10 and you can also see the hinge anchors in the scale locations.

Completed flap showing full down position.

Here you can see the opening in the top wing skin where the flap actuation rod protrudes. There will be a scale, functional door here when complete.

No pictures but Rick (the owner of the model) has done a great deal of filling, sanding, and priming on the fuselage. We are brain storming where to cut in a battery hatch at this point which is not a job I am looking forward to!

Horizontal stab construction is complete save for the final details. Stab is glassed with 3/4 oz cloth while the elevators were covered with Sig Koverall and Nitrate dope. It was a nice diversion but now focus will return to the construction of the wing which is where the majority of the airframe work remains. Looking forward to getting past that and on to the detailing stage!

Looks good. How much does it weigh compared to a fiberglass one that came with the kit? Thanks, Darren

Hmm, I replied several hours ago and now I come back to the thread and my reply is not here. Strange...

Darren, I have not weighed my stab against the kit supplied version but I will try and remember to do so when I get back out to my shop again. There is a build thread for this model here at RCU by Brad330l who used my built up tail on his model. As I recall his glassed and primered stab was 1.3 oz lighter than the kit version. That does not include the elevators which I am pretty sure are lighter than the kit provided parts as well. I will post back again when I have some hard numbers on the weight of my stab. Stay tuned...

Hi Chad, very nice work. What thickness are you using on the G-10 for the aileron shields?

Thanks

Thanks Tony. I'm pretty sure the G10 is .015" but it could be .020" as well. Either is fine for a model of this size and, in fact, .010" would probably be sturdy enough.

I get all of mine on Ebay from Norva Plastics. The price is good and they have always provided me with top notch customer service.

Here's one of their adds: http://www.ebay.com/itm/G10-Phenolic...item2c7d0a9dd6

I am right down the road from Norva Plastics. I never knew they sold the stuff!
They invented the plastic drop in Pickup Truck Bedliner if I remember correctly.

Speaking of memories, mine is generally considered to be quite bad. Just ask my wife! Case in point, I forgot that you had mentioned the need to increase the space between the elevators to fit the Yellow fuselage. Guess what I have to go back and do?!!! Well, at least I will be reminded now to go back and change it on the plans. When I designed the tail I used the Taylor plan as a reference and, apparently, the Taylor fuselage is a bit narrower at the tail end then the Yellow fuselage is. Doh!

And if I had remembered that I would have warned you Chad!!!

Adjusting the drawings will fix it for good.

Been a long time and many things have changed but work on the Spitfire continues. The basic wing construction is now finished and it has been glassed. Moving on to detail work such as the under wing radiators, cannons, gear doors, etc. Nothing about the wing was left stock and the changes included the new flaps and ailerons, completely revised wheel wells, additional reinforcements for the landing gear mounts and wing joints. I also added some spars inside the wing tips which key into the foam wing structure to strengthen the tip attachment. A butt-joint here seemed like a very bad idea. At any rate the project continues to move forward with the intent that it will be a contest worthy airplane when it is finished. And it won't be another three years before the next update either!

Thanks Joe! With any luck I and the Spit will make it to WoTR next year so maybe we will see you there?
