Got my wing halves glued together last night, moving on to the retracts this week. Looks like I need to cut my gear legs down so they fit right. They seem to be too long.
Is anyone using the wheel well liners, or are most just leaving them out?

I honestly TRIED to use the supplied wheel well tubs, but they crumbled in my hands,LOL! I will go back later and fabricate wood liners this Spring. There really isn't any need for them anyway, but I'll use that project just for something to do.

I was thinking of leaving them out and coating the inside with some thinned epoxy then painting it. Guess I will keep my options open for now.

OL 55,

What is the diameter on your spinner? I called YA and they said theirs is 3.5 inches. I have a three inch and a 3.5 inch. One looks a little big, the other looks a little small.

I've broken my canopy now about four times. First three cracks not so bad but the last one requires a replacement. Did someone say there are replacement canopies being made? (I am next in line @ TBM but that might be a few months from now.)

Thanks...

The Focke-Wulf style spinner, bought off fleabay is 74mm or 2.9+ inches in diameter. It's 3" for all intensive purposes. I believe sometimes the "shape" of a spinner can make them look either too small or too large. This one suits me fine.

LMAO! I had watched the video about cutting my ESM Zero canopy with a Dremel and cutoff wheel before I actually did it, and was real happy with the job I did when doing so, only to have one of the family cats piss me off (and I had the canopy in my hand!) so I wacked the cat (softly!) with the canopy and cracked it full length! That was last Summer and it, and other ESM parts I've had on backorder with TBM are still non existent. Other than ESM retracts (and I can repair them myself) I would say we're out of luck for replacement parts on these models. The 88" Zero is my only ESM model to date, and I think I'll keep it that way,LOL. Best of luck with Jeff and Bill on your ESM Corsair parts needs....

Would this work? It's only $30 and 40 mils versus the ESM 20 mil thickness.

Thanks for your input! Mine is fine for this time in the planes life. I just measured our ESM at just under 18 inches overall. But I'd give the Ziroli a go in the future.

OL55 &

Last time I talked to TBM they told me that I was second in line for a canopy and only one came with the recent shipment. The Byron/Iron Bay Zero canopy is about 19 and 1/2 inches long. The span on the Byron Zero is 88 inches and I think the length is 79 inches. The span on my ESM Zero is 87 and 3/8" but the length with the spinner is about 67 inches. The Ziroli Zero spans about 91 inches. If anyone out there has a Ziroli Zero maybe they could measure it for us. I wouldn't bet on it working.

I have an ESM Stuka that has done really well. Quite pleased with it actually....

OL 55 ...so did you try to glue up the canopy you have?

I think the eggs I eat for breakfast have a thicker shell than the canopy on my Zero.

After I get the engine in I will try and post some images...

I have a similar size Zero built by CMP and I had to add 3lbs of lead on the motor box ( electrical box full of lead ) with a Fuji 43. The weight is around 20lbs and has good speed, but if I had to do it again and I may I will use a Zenoah 62 others have in the CMP forum and it has lots of power and reduces the additional weight needed. You will love flying a Zero they fly great and look even better!

Good stuff! I myself have always leaned toward Yellow Aircraft's canopy as it's two piece with a frame, and inside "lens" giving better definition and ease of painting.

I agree on all of your statements Flyer35. The Zero is a very "neutral" airframe, and flys more balanced, or stable than most Warbirds (as far as mono planes go, anyway).

Thanks Tevans55,

So we know for sure it won't work. The Ziroli is twenty inches and the ESM frame calls for 17 and 3/4 inches, stem to stern... Well... leave no stone unturned. Will call YA on their canopy today.

BTW, Airborne has zero spinners if that hasn't been mentioned. They have 3 inch and 3.5 inch. No 3.25 inch. Plastic with aluminum base and center bolt. Low cost. Problem: center section at point is weak and will break out easily. But they have a nice scale looking profile and are inexpensive. I just add a little CA to the base to cement the spinner to the backplate and locktite the bolt. You can also get any color you want simply by painting with a scale color acrylic and then "frosting" with Luster cote flat clear.

I haven't run a new gas engine in a plane before. The DLE re55 manual says without vibration dampeners you damage the engine during break in.

Anyone have suggestions about an effective break in procedure for this engine? Oil ratio and octane rating?

Thanks,
John

Looking for a 3" Three blade spinner for mine, or an un-cut spinner so I can make it for a three blade prop. Looks like Tru turn has some pretty nice ones, they just aren't completely scale.

I gave up experimenting with multi blade props some time ago, and just stick to 2 bladed props. I find the 3 and 4 bladed props less efficient and fly the plane anemically. I just don't let anyone see the cowl/prop without it spinning,LOL!

Check Dave Brown products for some options concerning spinners.

I had real good luck with my TF P-40, so I think I will try it out on the Zero. Not looking for a super fast plane, just want it more scale.

No news on the Zero thread?
I have my retracts installed and my engine, and spinner have came in. I just have to get started on the fuselage.
Bought a second hand ESM 50cc 109, and that has took a little time from the Zero. Have the 109 ready to maiden now.

I'm rebuilding a plane that was lost about a month ago. After that, I will get back to the zero and get some pics up here.

Thanks for the video! (good looking formation fly!) I like my Yellow Aircraft Zero as well as my ESM Zero (okay, maybe more!), but have to admit the ESM flys better!

Right then, maidened my Zero with the 50CC 4 Stroke Kolm as well. What a brilliant combination. The 20x12 three blade really gives the plane an awesome punch. almost unlimited vertical and good speed.

It is an awesome floater. Took me four attempts to land the plane without overshooting the runway. It just glides on and on and on and on...

Looks good Rev! Got back started on mine last week. Trying to shoe horn a retractable tail wheel in there. There's not much room back there for all this stuff!

Thanks!

I built my retractable Tailwheel out of a cheap Hobbyking electric retract and some parts from an old mechanical 90° P-40 .40 size Retract. It swivels freely and works fine. goes up electric.

I have Robart air retracts, so I am trying to hook the tail wheel up with a small air cylinder. I have done this before but it just takes time to fit everything.
