RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
mine started life as a arf. after doing considerable damage to the wing ie a hard landing. after a long and fruitless argument with top flight, I was left with a good fuz. I came across miss Ashley and made a wing and tailplane to change it. also a turtle deck and canopy so its a stand of scale racer that will look good doing a high speed pass

For all you P-51 lovers out there. Here is a link to a short, crude video Ishot this past summer at Oshkosh. Turn your speakers up and listen to the sweet song of the Merlin!

WOW! You can add me to the list of late comers to this thread.
I have been reading for the last 3 days and am up to page 40. Still have a ways to go.
I bought my ARC about 5 years ago and hope to get it flying this year.
Gee, A lot has happened since this thread was started. Most of the early links as well as the suppliers have disappeared and no longer work. While reading the early pages (around the first 20-30 or so), ya want to chime in and help the guy out with today's answer but you realize he is in another time zone. It's like time traveling back into the early 21st century. So I have stayed off my keyboard til now.
I will add my thanks to all of the "contributors" so far. I have already learned a lot and feel more ready to tackle this bird prepared to do it right. I already have the Robart retracts that I bought at the same time I bought the ARC "Kit". I still have not settled on the engine to use since I have a wide range to select from in my shop from a G-38, Brison 2.4 and Quadra 42 all the way up to a G-62 and even a GT-80 or Brison 4.8. Actually I bought the airframe with the intention of seeing if I can get 190MPH out of it with a GT-80 on alcohol. That would take a lot of glass work to strengthen it and even then, the wing would not handle the 24 Gs to turn it around. So, being a Scale Master's Team Scale pilot, think I will just try to make it a good Warbird fly-in entry.
I don't know if it has been mentioned in the last 60 pages but here is a great source of "subjects" for people that don't want to just clone the "Big Beautiful Doll" - http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/index.php

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Wow, the old thread is still alive. I flew my Doll this past weekend for the first time in a year tunning up for a Warbird event here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The GS TF P-51 is such a pleasure to fly.........just like a big pattern plane, mine is 5 years old and really hauls with a Moki 210.
Any Warbird flyers look at our club web site,"waam.us", under events or look in the AMA mag for "Warbirds over BAMA, April 8th, 9th and 10th. Come on down and have some fun with us.

What exactly is the landing gear upgrade? Is there a post you might be able to direct me too? Is it just adding more glue in the landing gear areas?
Thanks, Mike
Thanks, Mike

Got it. Thanks for the link! This guy did a ton of reinforcement work!
I need to check inside of my wings and see what they look like. I have an ARF kit, so I would have to remove some of the covering to get to the interior of the wing as the pics showed.
Thanks again for the help,
Mike

i was so dismayed with this wing on mine, lack of glue, spar with grain running length wise and no vert. webbing, etc. i had eureka aircraft cnc hot wire me a foam wing for mine. i'll be using carbon fiber tape length wise top and bottom, sheeting, then ''light'' fiber glass and paint. i'll build a spar and secondary spar out of aircraft ply and inlay it into wing. with this foam i can re-enforce the landing gear area as i see fit. then all i have to deal with is the WEAK fire wall and horz. stab mounting which is in the wrong position anyway. then maybe this thing will stay together!!!!!!???????

Hey Thunderbolt.
The modifications that you did, are they accessible from the lander gear bay? Or, do you have to remove some of the covering?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi all, I do not know if this was covered in the thread but has anyone fixed the dihedral on the wing? I plane on getting one of these but there really needs to be more to make it look scale. Thanks

can't say about the wood wing but i had don at eureka aircraft cut in a tad more in my foam wing. i do realize that this is a semi scale sport type p-51 so i personally fixed stuff that is wrong with this plane to make it safe and also to my liking, like getting the correct eng. cowl/spinner, horiz. stab relocating kit, foam wing, sierra retracts converted to electrics by Down and LOCKED electric retracts conversion, 5'' sullivan alum. hub wheels, servo operated retract tail wheel assy. brillini 366 60cc gasser.

Hydraulic Conversion will be my move before I do anything to mine...
How much for electric retro fit?
100$ for the hydraulics....
I will test for leaks with air and soap before the oil goes int the plane...
May have to clear coat entire inside of plane, before I do this though...
A leak could be bad...Especially when I have the removable wings and can roll it on the mains...
I will have to inspect it on a regular basis...

I thought it was quite heavy duty...
Topflite uses Aircraft Quality plywood in theres....How many manufactures do that today??
I believe most use ULTRA=Lite Ply (2-sheets epoxied together)
I haven't looked in mine recently, but is it because it has balsa instead of plywood sheeting
on the sides of fuse leading up to firewall?

... spar with grain running length wise ...
... spar with grain running length wise ...
But- if the spar grain truly does run lengthwise/spanwise this is perfectly correct.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Ed, let me clearify my statement. the spar grain must run length of wing span, that's a given. BUT the horizonal grain MUST be backed up by vertical grain shear webs at LEAST out passed the LG ribs. the problem with this top flite p-51 is they o-mitted the shear webs and all i can see is horizonal grain in the wing spar. that is why the spar is splitting when a hard landing occurs, plus the lack of proper gluing in the gear area. that is why we have had to UP GRADE the spar and reglue or finish gluing the dang wing because top flite kit builds didn't do it right. i simply chose to not try and fix the orig. wing and opted for a foam wing for my 51. i'm so deeply invested in this airplane i have to keep going. when i'm done with it, it will be in a dvd i'm putting together. i'm sticking to the electric modified sierra retracts.

RC3074,
Could you show a proper webbing to spars pict??
Or draw on paper and take a pict and post it..???
I have had little time, and I am not finished with my wings...I want to make sure it is right before I seal it up!
Thanks...
