Hi John look great! I actually bought a DA100i to do the same setup. Any chance you can share more details on your firewall and the angle you rotated the engine? I sent you a PM with my info. I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
JM

First, I asked Kevin at J'TEC for a muffler with the "can" moved as far forward as possible. J'TEC has the info on file.
Next, bolt up the stock firewall omitting four blindnuts for the cowl. I wanted the cowl to be mounted separately.
From the inside, scribe a pencil line of the flange the firewall is mounted to.
Then, I held up a piece of 3/8" aircraft ply and scribed the inside of the flange to it. This will be the spacer. Cut it in the shape of a horseshoe about 1" wide. Be sure to cut it about 1/16" undersize so it will fit inside the flange with a little wiggle room.
Now make your new firewall to match the spacer. I used 3/8" AC ply.
It gets a little tricky here. Lay the original firewall on your bench, set the engine on it so the exhaust pipes line up with the bottom of the plane and you center the engine in the cowl. Now mark where your cylinder and exhaust are and cut out the original for clearance.
Epoxy the three pieces together and there you have it. I don't know if it was needed but, I through bolted some 4-40 bolts for added security.
Now for the cowl mount. I added 1/4" phenolic blocks to the face of the firewall to move the cowl out. The result is about 3/8" prop clearance.

I added a radial dummy from FTE and did up the cockpit with a sliding canopy. Thought you might like to see these.
The dummy took quite a bit of grinding to make fit!
see you soon,
John

Video test
Here is a short video of the DA 100I on the test stand
https://youtu.be/CuNJXw1b0lg We have since got one flight on the plane. Great power, mostly half throttle. Sounds good in the air. Unfortunately, I bent one of the trunions on the retracts on landing. I hit a rut on roll out.
see you soon,
John

Great work John, the Jug looks fantastic. If you want a really nice looking dummy radial that takes a lot less grinding give Scale Specialties a try next time. They have the best dummy radials in my opinion and the crank case is hollow cast which makes it much simpler to fit around your engine.

They make the nicest static props as well.

Thank you John really appreciate it, looks good. Did you leave the back open on the bottom for air flow? Can you post a pic of the cowl cut outs for the exhaust and air flow? Where did you get the radio tray box that you used to mount the ignitions and battery in?
Thx

I could also increase the size of the holes the exhaust protrude through.
Regarding the box for the ignitions, it came with the kit. Since the picture, I have added a choke servo.
Hope this helps.
see you soon,
John

Problem with wing tubes
I don't know if this problem is isolated to my plane alone.
On mine, when mounting the wings, there are no stops inside the wing to center the wing tubes. We noticed this the first time we dry fitted the wings.
My solution was pretty simple. After careful measuring, I fitted a plywood ring to the tubes then, routed out the rib on the fuselage to accept the ring.
Anyone else have this problem?
see you soon,
john

Hi Vince,
I also bought SNAFU, and I'm also putting a DA 100 In line in mine. I hope mine turns out as nice as John's.
I'm doing a build thread over on RCSB if anyone's interested. Here's a link: LINKY
