Here's a WW2 Hellcat video, dogfight stories: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hc_P0EE7c10

Video is 45 minutes long.

Here's another WW2 Hellcat video, Flying the Grumman F6F Fighter: Meet the Hellcat (1943), 20 minutes long:

Great video. I had no idea manifold pressure was so important. We think we have a lot to remember as RC flyers....

Hi Steve,
Sign me up for the Hellcat Brotherhood. Just pick up a partially started Jerry Bates 80 in. Hellcat. I will probably start a new build thread on this so I don't clutter up your thread.
Thanks,
Fred Menna Check6 from N. Scituate, Rhode Island

Did you receive the rivets and other stuff Ram? Very much looking forward to seeing your bird finished. Any idea on a paint scheme yet?

Got the rivets and panels. Very happy with them. I should have them on by the weeks end. I am debateing between a Brit scheme or an early model non-specuar blue/intermediate blue scheme. Something plain and rugged. I got her in primer now

You're welcome, Steve. I was also amazed at the landing speeds, slow by today's modern jet fighter standards, along with other factoids in the video. The shear horsepower and configuration of this many cylinder twin rotary engine was also amazing. The enemy fighters would attempt to flee in a dive, only to have the Hellcat accelerate and catch up to them. A short burst meant they weren't coming home.

Use of incendiary bullets, a development of WW1 was also amazing. I watched videos of WW1 dogfights, re-enacted in computer simulations along with historical photos, real videos, and etc. One simply didn't want to just punch holes in the other aircraft or kill the pilot, which was hard to be so precise in aim. Once an incediary projectile entered the aircraft, albeit the fabric covered, doped wings of WW1 or wing / fuselage fuel tank of WW2, he was toast. It added new meaning to being shot down in flames.

Use of larger diameter cannon projectiles, 20 mm on up had serious destructive power. It could punch through weaker armor plate, a 3/4" to 1-3/16" entry hole with projectile exploding or starting to tumble through sheet aluminum, magnesium and stainless steel sheet would do major structural damage, hydraulic and controls / controls surface damage, ensuring a wounded bird didn't have as much likelihood to travel home.

Hi Fred,

I'm afraid I do not have such a web site yet. It's on my "to do" list but I simply have not found the time to get it done. I do have a thread in the vendor's section over at RC Scale Builder which covers many of my products but not necessarily all of them, see link below. Have a look and if there is something in particular you need but do not see feel free to send me an email. [email protected]

Sign me up, I don't own a hellcat as of yet, but I have a long love affair with this bird. OK, now here is my issue I need a F6F Hellcat kit that is 1/7th scale so I can fly on the same scale with a 1/7th TF "Big Beautiful Doll" P-51-D Mustang, a TF 1/7th P-47 "Bonnie" Thunderbolt (The Wife's), A TF 1/7th Scale F4U Corsair, and Last but not least a Special factory sized 1/7th Scale TF REDBOX P-40 Warhawk. As a family we decided that we would build the kits that were left to us when my Father-In-Law a local flying legend and personal friend of the late Duke Fox passed, back in october. So with four TF builds on 1/7th Scale I need a Hellcat in a 1/7th scale. Ive got a Saito 1.20 and a full set of High torque servos. With a mini for the pnuematic Robarts 615 retracts that are waiting for my F6F.

ESM is the only place I'm aware of currently offering a Hellcat at or near 1/7 scale. It's an ARF rather than a kit but would be a good starting point for a scale "bash". Available from Troy Built Models or VQ Warbirds I believe. The Hellcat is a VERY large airplane and your Saito 1.20 and Robart retracts may not be up to the task on a 1/7 scale model.

But your 1/8 version is very close to the wingspan of the topflight kits he has & would suit his retracts/engine combo
& would be lot better model (my opinion anyway)

I guess your right Andy, my Hellcat is pretty much exactly the same size as the TF birds. I was focused on the "1/7 scale" bit but the TF P-47 and Corsair are actually 1/8 scale rather than 1/7 so my Hellcat would fit right in. And I just happen to know where there is a complete and unstarted kit for sale.

@ Chad, How do I manage to come by a RCFW 1/8th Hellcat full kit, I will need the cowl and canopy. Do you know of a website where I can find one of your kits or do I have to settle for the hangar 9 ARF or the Skyshark 1/9th scale.
