Hellcat Brotherhood

DA 85 will be great...
I fly my first Hellcat, which was very heavy (many details - 22 kg) with Evolution 80 GX.
Model fly very nice, need little more for take off, but in the air no different between that and my second F6F.
Second Hellcat (with yellow color scheme) was 19,5 kg with Zenoah GT80...
First flight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvzU...layer_embedded
You will enjoy with your model...

My Byron Hellcat came to me through an unfortunate event for its previous owner. Flying low and too far off the runway and over the edge of a soybean field, the Hellcat flew into a small rise. The two foot tall soybeans brought it to an immediate stop from wide open. Damage was limited to the wing joiners/spars being stressed and broken and the cowl was stressed and full of soybean stalks and leaves. The Robart gear were in the retract position but the frames were slightly stressed by the wing movement.
The owner was not going to fix it and was willing to sell the whole airplane as is less the receiver so I took on the project. I believe a wrecked airplane is a terrible thing to waste.
Attached are two pics of the planes current status. The G62 that was installed was full of dirt so it was disassembled and the grit was removed and then oiled and reassembled. The previous green "Supercat" paint job has been stripped down to the fiberglass on the fuse and the previous paint on the wings and tail. The wing attachment and the spars have been repaired. A few items were considered by me to be in need of upgrading. The nyrods to the elevator were removed and replaced with solid 4-40 pushrods through nylon guide tubes. The analog elevator servo was replaced with a digital servo. The stabilizer/fuselage junction was flexible so inner bracing stiffened that up. Flap hinges had broken loose so new hinge slots were made to better secure the flaps. A separate servo for each outer flap will be installed. The skins on the wing stubs off the fuselage were very flimsy so some sub ribs were installed to firm things up. The stripper has slightly damaged some of the fiberglass on the surface but a little spot putty and primer will make it like new.
I'm sure other little things will surface that will need upgrading or repair, but I believe I will have a very flyable, good looking Hellcat when all is done.
Question: I am doing the cat-mouth paint scheme. Can someone advise me as to what the correct colors should be for the fuse and wings?

I stumbled upon this Ziroli Hellcat barn find over a year ago. The previous owner had passed away and the plan was sold to me during the estate sale. It was almost to good to be true...Unfortunately I've been caught up with other projects in the hanger and the Hellcat found its way to the back-burner. I came across a Byrons At-6 and a Bud Nosen clipped wing p-51 after finding this Hellcat find which Have kept me busy. After I sent both the Texan And mustang out for paint I started to get bored waiting on them to return from the painter ( which was taking longer than expected). I pulled the Hellcat out of storage and started to disassemble it and assess the project...... I've been at it about a month now... Originally she was in pretty bad shape with the eyesore paint job. As you can see from the pic I was all smiles as i'm holding this thing. I count even handle the price he gave me. I forked over the cash and tossed it in the back of my truck before he changed his mind....

midsatouch_73, that is an interesting story.
Once in a great while a good deal comes along. Looks like you will have a winner in no time.
Can we sign you up to the Brotherhood?
Small world too by the way. I lived in Corona in the mid 80's while working on the B-2 program in Pico.
If my memory serves correctly, your truck is parked just outside of a restaurant.

Sheeting continues on the Hellcat. I did get ahead of myself once again. The leading edge sheeting is in place so i will have to remove some for adding a landing light and machine gun supports.
I would like to add a joint hider where the wing outer panels meet the center panel. Been kicking around some different ideas for material but would like your opinion. What i have thought of using is .010 aluminum, the problem with this is i have only found it is 10" long K&S sheets so that will leave a joint fore and aft, .010 carbon fiber strip, my only concern with that is the compatibility with paint or 1/64th plywood, flexibility may be an issue to avoid another joint, running the material with the grain or against the grain.

Ziroli Hellcat Rebirth
Thanks OldScaleGuy... She looks like she's coming along nicely. It's hard to stop when you see the progress.... I'm making progress myself. Should be ready for paint soon. Pretty much completed the Mirce finishing kit. Waiting on my dummy radial from Ziroli to show up so I can center the engine and modify my cowl. I'm gonna have to blister the cowl for the plug caps of the DLE 120. I started working on the cowl flaps meanwhile. Hopefully I can start putting some paint on her in the next week, I'v also gotta install a hatch somewhere for my switches and fuel....

Thanks. Yours is coming along well too. The DLE-120 will haul it with no problems at all. I have a 111 in a 33% Extra, it is a great engine.
Curious. Where will you take it to fly it? When i was there we flew at a small field close to a school. It is a bit vague these days (28 years later) but it wasn't far from where i lived on Border Avenue south of the main through street.

We fly at Prado airfield near the women's prison in Chino. It's about 10 minutes away.... I can't wait to see how the engine performes.. I have a Dle 111 in my ESM 85 corsair and its a gear flying plane with that combo... I'm known for over peering my warbirds but they look so impressive egg they fly... Here's a look at my corsair flying at our field.. iIt says maiden flight but it's the first two flights combined in the video...

Aloha,
I flew my ESM F6F today at our Pu'unana flying field. She flew as expected...great, but I had a bit of engine trouble.
My engine was kind of going Brrr...Brrr...Brrr...and then when I landed, it quit. It seemed to cycle hi-low-hi-low and other then at idle, never really had solid power. My fuel is clean and new, with no alcohol 92 octane and a 30/1 mix of Royal Purple two cycle mix. This is the first time this has happened to me. I pulled the cowl and it did the same thing, and I witnessed no bubbles in the fuel line. The model sat for eight months with out being flown, but now giving me real running issues. The engine ran great before, but not now. Ive a PTE 36cc gas engine in this model. Any ideas guys....?
It was a strikingly beautiful day to fly. Cool with a 10 kt. Kona wind and lots of rainbows.
Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

You might has air getting into the system somehow how or a clog in the line or carb... if there are bubbles either the carb trying to pull fuel and isn't getting it or the carb diaphragm could be faulty that high low thing is a sign of a fuel problems usually... just a few suggestions...
