Chad, I'm looking forward to seeing some progress on your 1/6th Hellcat design and build. Jerry Bates has what he calls a 1/6th plan with an 80 inch span, which is actually 1/6.45th scale. This is a few years down the road, but I'd like to build a larger Hellcat after completing your 1/8th kit, and I have an interest in trying out the Saito FG-90R3. If your 1/6th kit/plans is ready then, I'll probably go that way instead of the JB plans.

I would really like to think that the big Hellcat will be done within a couple of years hessian. Based on how well the little one flies I am confident that the 1/6th scale will be a superb performer and I would like it to be my next contest airplane. As such all of the scale deficiencies of the smaller one have been corrected (All that I am aware of anyway!) in the hopes of making it a contest caliber model. Design of the fuselage and tail feathers is complete and work has turned to the wing. Trying to keep the wheel well area as scale as possible and also incorporating the scale, slotted flaps of the full size. This is the toughest area of the Hellcat without a doubt. A simpler sport scale flap arrangement will also be shown on the plan for those not interested in torturing themselves to duplicate a feature that 99.9% of people will never notice! At any rate I am humbled that you are interested in the airplane and will do my best to accommodate when your are ready.

See you at the next WOTR? Hope to have Brian's big Macchi 202 ready for that one. It's the primary reason that no work has been accomplished on the Hellcat for a couple of years now!

Some teaser pics of the 1/6th Hellcat project. The cowl and canopy plugs were designed and 3d printed by Dave Schwirian of Scale Specialties and he also printed the proof of concept scale tail wheel retract. I designed the main wheels and had them printed at Shapeways. Much more scale than anything currently available and lighter to boot. Important when the wheels are retracting backward! Currently being tested out on a Ziroli Corsair and working nicely. Should be lots of neat scale accessories for this one by the time it is finished.

Chad, that is some seriously awesome work. I'll be working my whole life to attain your level of craftsmanship. WOTR is definitely on my todo list again this year and I'll look forward to seeing the Macchi. I'm still putting my new garage & workshop together so hopefully I can get something basic ready to fly and join the pilot crowd this time. Haha that seems to be my goal every year so I'm not sure how much confidence to have in that.

Default My first Hellcat

Well, brothers, finally got around to building my Wings Hellcat. It is going to be sport scale. It has an OS91 Surpass with CJ retracts and flaps. Should be a fun bird to fly.

Chad, are you going to have kits available for the 1/6th scale version? 1/6 scale puts it at 86-87" wingspan. Is that correct? Anything i can do to support the project, please let me now that my Ziroli Hellcat is wrapping up. I am planning on a WW1 out of a kit as a "relaxer" project next perhaps after that one of your 1/6 Hellcats..... ?
RCPROPSNAPPER, any Hellcat is a good Hellcat, sport scale or otherwise.

Assuming all goes as hoped for the plans and accessories will be available Steve and, most likely, somebody will be offering a laser cut short kit. Span is right around 86 inches and I am planning on either a G-45 or G-62 depending upon where the all up weight comes in. Hoping for around 25 pounds but it very well could go 30 with all the detail. Should fly great either way. My Byron Corsair flew great at 31 pounds and the Hellcat has substantially more wing area. At any rate I would love to have you on board. Maybe get you to build one of the pre-production samples? Somebody with your skill set would do it justice for sure. At any rate I have a build thread on the airplane here at RCU somewhere. It' s probably buried 20 pages deep by now but as soon as there is movement on the project again I will resurrect the old thread. Keep an eye out for it and thanks a bunch!

Sounds good Chad. Thank you for the kind words. Count me in. I have 2 DLE-55's so that might be a good option and avoiding buying another engine is always a bonus.

DLE-55 should be absolutely perfect Steve. My use of one of the Zenoahs is simply because I have them on the shelf and they have proven to be absolutely bullet proof in the reliability department. Oh, and they are heavy. Almost never a bad thing on a model of a radial engine warbird!

To the Hellcat brotherhood, I am currently building a Ziroli Hellcat with fiberglass fuse. Question is when mounting the ailerons the plans show a hinge mount at the top of the trailing edge of the wing rather than mounting at the center of the wings trailing edge ( like a robart hinge ) has anyone had a problem with flutter with the hinge mounted as ziroli has shown on the plans. Thankyou in advance Tangss563

On the Ziroli Hellcat i just finished i did some redesign on the ailerons and hinged them in the center with Robart hinges. You may want to consider doing the same, plus it is closer to scale.

Thankyou for the reply I was able to find a good picture of full size aircraft aileron hinges and will start to make the changes this weekend. Just didn't like the way these were turning out. Tangss563
