You'll be fine with your P-47. It is a well mannered airplane. Enjoy!

no swastika because some people get offended... before you get all uppity... you try having that conversation with someone who's father and Mother died somewhere terrible.
Thats certainly a respectable decision. The jug looks great. Good luck although you shouldn't need it.

does anyone know off the top of their head what the initial needle settings are for a DA50... I can't find the manual... 22X10 Xoar prop and RedLine 40:1 mix if that makes any difference

You are always safe starting out with 1.75 turns on each needle then lean as necessary.

Great maiden flight... no weirdness... took off trimmed even didn't touch the elevator... gear cycled nicely... she's really touchy on the elevator (already at 50%) so i'll try expo... slight pop up with flaps... slows down really really well... nose stall. 4 laps and check for loose screws... everything was A-Okay!

Second flight was even nicer.. with all the extra weight the DA50 can't pull her thru a 300 foot loop (egg shaped which is perfect for Scale Judging)... military roll really nice.. dirty pass - really slow... on final, cut the throttle and she sinks like a brick... greased the landing... very nice rollout on the mains... Didn't get to test the Sullivan skywriter this time (my field doesn't allow it)

Wish the DA pulled a little harder but what a great engine... 1 3/4 on the needles and she started up and transitioned beautifully.. got to find better wheels... the Robarts on there are'nt stiff enough... very gushy... can't afford Glennis but maybe I'll get lucky...

Great day at the field... thanks for all the help through this one...

Sparky, how much does it weigh? Glad to see you had a great maiden. How about the starter?

I don't have a scale.. but she's fat... I'm guessing over 25lbs... I'll find a scale because now I'm curious... no starter for the DA... I had to have a woodruff key made last time (another DA50) that sold with the plane it was in... She starts in four flips though... 2 to pop on choke and 2 to get it runnin... I thought I was going to struggle since its a new motor but she kicked right up...

Sparky,

Glad I was able to help. Question: What prop are you using? Also, you might consider a Bowman ring. S.O.P. now for all my engines. There is a noticeable difference.

I thought I had replied.. RCU tiddlywinks...

Lifer, it's a Xoar 22X10 Sword (Valley View RC - predrilled ). she idles at 1850 solid and tops out at 6400RPM right now... the Bowman ring has me concerned regarding warranty with DA.. waiting for a call back from Jeff at DA to see if it's okay...

UPDATE>>> I tried the skywriter today w/ Robart smoke oil.. apart from the siphoning w/o the pump running it definitely pours a ton of smoke.. the alley behind the house looked like a fog bank rolled in during a 85degree, sunny day... woot!!! I can't use it at my regular flightline (flyocma.com) but the PVMAC site is much more lenient.. can't wait!!!

Hello all,
I am currently working on a Top Flite P47 ARF (60 size), and have a DLE 20RA to put in it. I also have the Dubro vibration isolation mounts I just bought today. However, I mocking up the mounts and the engine I have noticed the mounts are larger than the firewall that is already glued into place. The pre-drilled holes to use the supplied engine mount look to be off center. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how to modify the firewall so it does not weaken the frame? I thought about just putting another 1/4" ply while using the already drilled holes and blind nuts and bolting it over the existing firewall, and drill the holes to set the blind nuts for the mounts as I need them, but then noticed the blind nuts for the added firewall would be up against the existing firewall. I was also concerned about that added 1/4". The TF manual says the engine is to be mounted 6 1/8" from the firewall to the leading edge of the thrust washer. I thought about cutting the existing firewall away from the frame but then I would have to cut off some of the cowl mounting blocks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Has anyone else had to modify their firewall to install the DLE 20 or 20RA?
Thanks

I a TF .60 size also with a DLE 20 in it. I was told not to use soft mounts because of the movement. I know it sounds backwards but I think it has to do with the 2 stroke vibrations at low RPM and High RPM. The muffler manufacture specifically stated that if soft mounts were used it voided any warranties. I would use the stand-offs that came with the DLE 20 and then either stack up the proper distance to achieve prop and cowl clearance.

Mine runs fine without soft mounts, I've got over 200 flights and haven't seen any vibration related issues.

Let's see what other suggest.

I've been using the soft mount for three seasons now without issue. Doesn't mean its right though.

I'm not the expert either, but just wanted to pass along what I've experienced with the same plane and motor combo.
Can you upload a photo, that's always a big help with finding a solution.

Sparky. Your 47 looks awesome. I like those captured birds. Very different.
Mine was 26.5 lbs, and flew great. I see people fly them at over 30 lbs, and no problems there.
As for swastika, different people have different opinions. I was born in Poland, and NAzis kicked our butts. But that was 80 years ago. I'm finishing my TF Mustang, and this one will be in captured german colors. Swastika included

I'm taking the captured P-47 to Warbirds over the Rockies next month.. I've got the decal for Callie Graphics... I'll put it on for that event... There was a older gentleman at my flightline who asked me about the swastika on a smaller BH FW190 I had some time ago and that has really me worried that if he was offended by the graphic it's likely others will be too.

I don't want someone to equate me to Nazis or anything like that but I love my axis warbirds... Japanese, German, Italian... it's just different from all the other birds on the flightline and that makes me feel good. okay.. blithering ended...

I'm so excited about the Rockies event... I hope my planes survive the next couple weekends or else I'll be flying a foamie in front of all those guys...

Forget it, that's how people rewright history if it's a war bird and u were going to compete in a scale contest
It better be all scale finish color and markings if U expect to win. Don't worry about what others think that's their problem.

I have to agree with Hounddog on this one. Freedom of speech is one of the rights we fought for and if someone is offended, too bad.
