I have the kit version of the Top Flite with the ASP 5 cylinder radial and the fiberglass specialties cowl. I had to cut openings for 3 of the rockers. If I had mounted the engine more in the middle I wouldnt have had to cut it, but I couldnt have the engine in the wrong place. You don't notice the holes much in the air . I didn't do a smooth job of cutting the holes as you can see in the video. It was more of a cut n go

Ok I have so much work in my cowl and you had to chop your anyway ill continue with mine, unfortunately the writing on my cowl took 8 hours per side and my cylinder heads will come right through it!

Im going to slit it under and over the writing and open the front out and reglass it so it has molded scoops

Ive made a fair bit of progress with my re-engine, im in the process of running all the electrics for the glow drivers for 5 cylinders, just discovered my Hangar 9 fuel tank has a crack, thats 3 H9 fuels that have cracked on me.

I have 22 year old dubro tanks that arnt cracked so im not so happy.

The kits a 82" 150 size , I think its 1/6 scale.

I have made a custom spinner that is scale and Biela 4 blade CF prop, thinking of putting a second tank in as reserve as the Saito fa325 is know to drink a little and mine has had a little encouragement too.

Nice flying field is it a full scale runway or maybe an old abandon airport?

I ran her up today for the first time since the install, its had an 1 &1/4 hours run in already. Im certain it may need a fuel pressure regulator as it seems harder to dial the mixture in as easily as on my test bench. It still pulled a MAS Classic 18x10 @ 7900 rpm so shes making plenty of power, would be up around 10kg of thrust, heres the video.

It is a nice field, about the only bad thing about it is the river runs on both ends of the runway. A lot of us have received our Naval wings
this is an older picture. We repave every 10 years or so. The county owns the land, it is a model port only although we have had some full scale ultralights land on it. It is about 550 feet long and 50 feet wide

The Saito book says the FA 325 will pull a 20x10 but I think it would be a little too much prop to really perform, I figure yours is the 400 size motor so it probably better suited to it.

I have just finished making a fuel pressure regulator for my big girl.
I was going to buy one until I realised how easy they are to make, made one out of a stray walbro carb I had laying here, works great.

should give me rock steady mixture control.

cheers Blair

Warbird Al,

The Classic series are nearly indestructible but are far from efficient. Have you tried the Xoar props? I have found them to be some of the best props available.

Best regards.

Blair, any chance you'd share with the class how you made your regulator? I'm interested.

Lifer, yes I like the XOAR props I use them on my gas engines. I will have to try it on this engine next time I am out! Not sure why I had not thought of that lol

Hi Steve, a regulator can be made from any walbro style carby if your a little handy.

you just need to produce the needle and diaphragm arrangement without all the rest so you can cut off a spare carby or like me pick one which is already modular.

started as;

after some mods;

How it works; the carby draws from the nipple on the side connected to the reservoir inside, as the fuel is consumed the exhaust pressurised tank refills the reservoir when needle under the diaphragm is lifted, rock steady constant pressure.

you just have block of the unwanted holes or ports into the chamber.

cheers Blair

Careful with too many RPM on the Saito. It will kick a pushrod out. Losing a cylinder at a bad time is not fun..ask me how I know.

Thank you much Blair. Who woulda thought. I guess I haven't really thought too much on how a regulator worked. Just knew they did.

Hi Jeff, what rpm do you consider to be too much ?
Book on it says 18x10 to 20x10, I was thinking of running a 18x12 as it turns 18x10 MAS @ 7900 on the ground.

cheers Blair

We turn ours just under 7000 on the ground with a Xoar 20x10 prop. It runs best on 30% nitro. It is a thirsty engine for sure.

Any thoughts on a 5 cylinder spark ignition module ? Still methanol fuel just they run a little leaner on spark.

I have a 4 blade Biela that it will sit just under 7000rpm and look great too.

Hey Blair,
Its looking good! way to take your time with the valve cover cut outs.
Have you done a build review on your custom exhaust for the Saito 325?
I accessed your YouTube video running up the engine and the exhaust was sounding really good.

Thank Dave, i didnt do a build review, i have plenty of photos though i probably should. I put up plenty of info on exhaust building in the gas radials page in the last couple of days if your interested.

Fitting the fa325 into this p47 has been a challenge but i forget all the work when shes one of a kind at the end. I wonder if mine is the only H9 p47 with the Saito fa325??

Cheers Blair

Ive looked and cant find any reference to another one.

I bet it is the only one with a Saito 325 radial in it.
That's what makes it so cool. I too really enjoy creating airplanes that are unique and have done
a number of ARF redo's to achieve that goal, its always worth it in the end.
Keep up the excellent work and I will check into the radial thread to see how you did things on
the exhaust.

see ya
Dave

She's getting close to being airworthy, I had hoped the engine didn't need to come out again but im getting air bubbles in the bowl of my fuel filter so I wont fly it till i find the source. Ive already changed all the lines but still getting bubbles at below half tank.

In testing today the Saito Fa325 hit 7410 rpm turning a MAS classic 18 x 12 , thats got to be some serious pull im thinking!

Heres the video;
