I reluctantly ordered one of those that might fit on my Yellow P-47...but I'm scared to death ordering from HK...well time will tell I guess. Did you check out the reviews - one was 100%+ and the other 100%- !

Thanks for the link radfordc, I ordered one today. Considering shipping from the international site I've put the fuse aside and started on the wings. It will probably be a month before I get it. Electric works for me as I'm going to use electric mains. it looks a little short, no tail dragging?

From the looks of the opening for the wheel you must have done gear doors, any pics of that?

Thanks again
bigbird

Did you have to add/remove any extra weight to balance with the engine swap?

I didn't do gear doors...just an aluminum cover. The gear is a little shorter than scale but no dragging problems.

I moved the batteries back as far as I could and also added 6 oz of lead in the tail. The motor swap added about 1.5 lbs to the gross weight.

Here are a couple of pics of how I installed the HK tailwheel in my ESM LA-7. I first made a mounting block to fit the gear and then glued the block to the fuselage former. I found out just gluing wasn't strong enough. I had to drill a couple of 1/8" holes through the block into the former and glue in dowels to lock the block securely.

Nice Jug, I'm going to do mine in the scheme on the box (wife's name is Bonnie). I will also fiberglass and paint. My Hellcat turned out pretty good.

RCU is not letting me upload pics (.jpeg 148k) for some reason.

I ordered the electric tail wheel retract from Hobbyking, the email said it "might' take 45 days to receive it but it only took 11 days. the package was kinda rough but the retract looks good! Now I can go back to work on the Fuse!

The P-47, based on the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, was to be very effective as a short-to-medium range escort fighter in high-altitude air-to-air combat and, when unleashed as a fighter-bomber, proved especially adept at ground attack in both the World War II European and Pacific Theaters. The P-47 was one of the main United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) fighters of World War II, and served with other Allied air forces, notably those of France, Britain, and Russia. Not sure if its been said but keep volts to 4v. Dont run 6v you will fry the motor or logic

4.8v (not 4v, my mistake)but you get my point....anymore and its a risk. Mine cycled a couple times at 6.0v and pow..dead...done..nada!!

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=60347 this is the one I bought.

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...dproduct=42657 this is the one is less expensive but I would apply the same principle.

I personally like the lower voltage because it slows the retract down. Gear that moves up and down fast turns me off.

I notice they do that sometimes...just drop the price. Let it sit on your screen for about 3-5 minutes and they will give you a lower price, then add it to your cart. BTW, you can drill & thread a 1/4" rod on one end and cut it to length and that will extend your tail wheel a little more if you need to raise the rear end some

I was looking at the ASP FP400 5cyl radial and it was around 800ish cant remember the exact price, next day it dropped to 512.00 so I snagged it!

tailskid, no prob..just sharing the exp..

Props to radfordc for the hobbyking hookup!

Another Tarheel Hal bites the dust.

A Saturday night like the old days: Time to replace my new Top Flight Giant Scale P-47 Thunderbolt in the Tarheel hal with new colors. 2 hours to strip stars, sand cowl and fuse monokote, add some panels. Then mask and spray flat black. This will be stand off scale until, I do a full make over into a P-47M later this year.

More pics.

Silver paint was Dupli-color spray cans from Auto zone, I think for Chysler cars, silver. Just lightly sand monokote with 400 dry sandpaper and wipe off with mineral spirits. Use a sticky tack-cloth to get all the dust off. It will get a clear coat later for gas. I used this on a Mustang and it holds up well.

Sunday night, Another 2.5 hours working in the P-47 new paint scheme. Two coats of silver on the cowl so done. I removed more monokote from tail feathers and squadron codes letters by fuse insignia. Most time spent measuring and masking off the striping pattern on the tail feathers. I will spray paint black stripes tomorrow.

Tonight, finished the glossy black spray paint on the tail feathers. I'm happy with the changes.
Emailed CallieGraphics for some new Squadron code letters and nose art, name and nomenclature graphics.
