Chris, I am using the 16D hub with parts to adapt it to the RimFire motors which I would not recommend any one to use this combination as there are better motors available and the hub and blades are undersize for this class of motor. I am going to be buying either the Eflite P 360 or the Dualsky 90mm (6000.8?) diameter motor and I am buying the VP 25F or 32i hub with larger blades that are rated for the 6-8000 rpm range that these motors will turn. I tried lugging the motor rpm down to suit the 4800 rpm rating of the VP 22.6 blades (part#575-16) by increasing pitch to as much as 20 inches but ran into an increased current draw (165 amps) but no increase in performance and degraded acceleration below 100 mph. And prop rpm remained too high in the 5500-6500 range. In this case the 2 blade electric props had better efficiency than the 4 blade.
I used the VP 22.6 blades (Hamilton Standard profile) on the R 65 which easily over revved them and the 19.9 Spitfire blades (pn#505-16) on the R 50 which worked better but I lost the visual presence in the air that the HS 22.6 blade give to the plane. When these HS blades are decaled and painted with yellow tips the propeller really shows up in the air. The 19.9 SpitFire blades are nearly invisible except when photographed with a high res. camera.

I will be glad to upload CSV files for you but you will have to tell me how. I have been taking jpeg pics of them and posting the picture but you can't load pics into the Castle graph viewer for a detailed analysis. In one case I have the CSV file and a corresponding video but the prop was a 2 blade turned by the R 50. It can give you an idea of the performance possible though.

As they always do- they come out with a warbird but they only sell it for 2-3 years. Then they discontinue it and dont even sell replacement parts for more than a few months after they discontinue that plane. so if you need or want parts you CANT GET THEM. pretty self centered by them - they dont really care about you very much just their profits.

i will say that they are helping the hobby in certain ways by pushing into new technology areas, but i for one will never buy their warbirds because the actions i describe above show they dont respect us the hobbiest, and there are several other sources that do respect us enough to support their products, so i buy from them.

IN reply to the HH warbird issue of finding things discontinued.... I went to buy the 20cc corsair and poof ... not on the site. I tend to agree. I had convinced myself to get the H9 P51.... but the more i have considered this... the more the TF sounds appealing. It has been around a while... plenty of parts. plenty of mods and a tried and true. Feeling a little frustrated with H9 - HH rite now ....
Thoughts? I have a new 70cc four stroke and shopping for a home to put it in. difficult decision.

Hi Guy's, I'm building a TF p-51 but am limited to Big Beautiful Doll. Can anyone help me find a good source of Photos. I'm finding different photos with variations of the colors on the tail and under the wing tips. Any source would be helpful. Thanks john Taylor Mustang Brotherhood #55

Since you didn't say what you've tried so far, I'll start with the easiest. A Google Image Search turns up a lot of hits. Have you already tried that?

Simply do a Google search for "78th FG P-51D" to see many aircraft from the same squadron with markings variations.

I'm staying out of the discussion about hard to find or no longer sold kits considering I completed a 3W-114"- Inline twin using only high voltage rating electronics on everything.

I did the doll many years ago using the byron kit and these birds had variations from season to season as they weathered and the different type of cameras that were used cause changes. I chose what I thought the judges in my area would recognize as correct and I could document as accurate for that specific time. The links provided by the guys are the links to explore.

A buddy of mine in Warbirds West posted a quick video from Winter Warbirds in Phoenix of the Rockwell F-51. The power performance enhanced F-51 held the fastest coast to coast record for prop driven speed and the F-51 entire wing was modified to carry fuel, making it a long distance executive toy or an extended loiter over target for ground support aircraft used in south america. Many of the P-51's in warbird colors today are actually F-51's modified back to the older vertical stab and have had the guns and drop tanks added back on.

They look like P-51's but they are on serious steroids

Simple,
I have had a NIB 3W P-51 for years and have been trying to motivate myself to build it.
It looks like it would be a big project with a lot of re engineering and special attention to the inline engine baffling. Actually I was also thinking about the Hoover color scheme.
Cudos to you for getting yours done!

The Top Flite ARF has a twin in the kit form, so if you can't find replacement parts, you can at least buy the kit portion and rebuild them. So if you say smash a wing, you can buy the wing kit, and rebuild the wing yourself if a replacement isn't available. Thats the one thing TF has over other ARF's.

Default Mustangs

I have built a lot of Mustangs in my days. Clear back to my control line era. I think it was the second scale model I ever built. But I competed a lot back then and built many different schemes.

When I went to RC in the mid 70's I shortly made a sport model of the Mustang. They had fiberglass fuselages and used mechanical retracts. I even built a couple for fellow modelers.

The two Mustangs I have now started out as "Top Flite" golden edition kits. but I did major modifications to the kit.

I built the fuselage including the front hatch and made a plug out of it. I then layed up a fiberglass fuselage off the plug using Isophthlic resin. I use a Rim Fire 1.20 for power so you will notice there are no hatches on the aircraft. I used "Century Jet" retracts for the mains and "Robart" retract for the tail. I also built functioning inner and out doors for the mains and the tail wheel. Painted with PPG automotive paint.

My second Mustang I have is my favorite Mustang of all times. "Roto Finish" from back in my attending the "Reno Air Races" every year. 1972 Champion. About the first highly modified Mustangs of the modern era. Went on to modified into the "Red Baron".

I modified my Mustang plug by changing the canopy line and adding the large wing fillets. I also had "Century Jet" make me a set of custom main retracts for more scale. Other than that the construction is the same. The wings are clipped and "Horner" tips are applied and the stab is also clipped. The spinner they used was from a P-40 so I also had to use a "Ultimate" spinner from "Dave Brown"

Yes I am a Mustang nut. And would love to be one of your brotherhood.

Hi George,

The guy who started this my or may not give you a number, if you care. You don't need one, check in from time to time. Some where back in the thread all the used "number" were listed, if you find that just pick a unused number.

Glad to have you along!

You need to reverse one of the servos. Here is a way: [h=1]5~6V Servo Signal Reverser Compatible for all servo[/h] http://www.banggood.com/Servo-Signal...yL8aAufD8P8HAQ

George Miller,

Did you ever build one of the control-line Top Flite kits of the Mustang? They had one advertised as "monocoque" construction. I had an Enya 35 in mine and a J.Roberts 3-line system in it.

Looks to me like you own the franchise! Great models!

I'm in the process of rebuilding a TF P-51 giant scale. I'm using the "Lady Alice" scheme.

Hi George,

Some truly spectacular models there! I have little interest in stock D model Mustangs and find the early variants, as well as the post-war civilian and racing types to be much more interesting. I am working (very slowly mind you) on a model of the "Red Baron" as it appeared in its final form with the Griffon installation. Looking at running electric so that I can swing the counter rotaters but, ouch, the price is steep! Also wanted to say that I have enjoyed your articles in "The Airborne Reader" digital publication. I hope it is your intention to continue to submit articles for the publication's new owner.

PS - I picked up a bunch of old "Flying Models" magazines last weekend and was just reading an article from 1980 about your big A-10 project for the Reno Nats. Seems like a lifetime ago!

I did not. The only kit I built was, if I remember correctly, a "Jetco" kit. And it actually was a model of the P-51"H" which was quite different than the "B" or "D" and required a lot of modification.

The "Paul Mantz" #46 was quite large for back then in control line and was scratch built.
