Hay Guys,
I purchased a VQ P-38 white kit from a gentle man and when I opened the kit...it was already started and was damaged. The aft tail booms were cracked and I have two left and one right engine pods. I will not be building this kit and actually boxed it back into to two boxes and stored it in my attic. I would love to see it with some one that can use the parts or wants to put it into the air. It will take some work to fly, but no longer interested in the project. I'll part it out or ship, but I live in Hawaii...and shipping is not cheap. So, if you need parts and willing to pay shipping...the kit is free. I've a N.P. modified P-38 built and I'm waiting for ESM to come out with their new P-38...if they ever do it again. I just want to see this model placed where it will keep one flying.
Aloha,
Bobby of Maui

Very generous offer. If no one else chimes in, I'm always game for a project! Any chance you could post, pix, and any idea of box sizes and weights
Thanks

Hi Guys,
Its a complete kit...but not new. It has some hanger rash, bumps and the engine booms, near the elevators are cracked/broken. I need to know what you guys need to keep your VQ P-38's flying, and I'll forward the parts, sans the cost of shipping. Just send me a PM to what you need to get your VQ P-38 back in the air, and I'll forward the parts. All I have is one kit, but it seems to be complete.

Cost varies a bit as I custom make each order to the customer's specifications. However I can provide you with some basic numbers which will allow you to arrive at a very close estimate. In general enough rivets and fasteners to flush out a typical single engine fighter type to a believable level will run about $75-100. I have a sample sheet available for $5 which includes three different sizes of rivets as well as the various types of fasteners. Drop me a note if you would like to discuss the details or order a sample sheet.

Guys
While the YA-38 is going to be "silver", I would like to keep the NP model a darker green, and play down some of the un-scale like lines. Looking for low cost spray cans that will pass for Olive Drab.....an ideas?
My intent is only to make it sit like a P-38 on the ramp, and give it the correct profile. Last two things on my "hit" list are tweaking the cowlings for larger spinners, and a more scale like pod/canopy. For what it is, the side profile's not too bad! Don't think I'm going to do anything with either until next winter. Have high hopes this one may be a new "take everytime" plane vs knee shaking masterpiece....gotta keep it fun
FYI, Krylon Olive green is almost a perfect match to original color, and the dark camo green is close. Picture shows olive green to the left, camo green next to it, and the rest of the wing with the stock color.

Sent you a PM
Thanks

I just got back from the Toledo show and getting caught up with emails.
I did I test with the Krylon olive green and it just didn't do the trick for me , but that's just me.
What I used was the Rust-Oleum Camouflage and was quite impressed of the results . Here is a picture for you.
Hope this helps

Hate to hear the Byron Corsair is going, but it certainly looks like someone is going to get a nice plane! Work has been pretty busy lately, so not a lot of progress in the shop. Set my YA-38 aside to get a few things ready to go a month or so ago, so now it sits in the corner of misfit planes. Looking forward to getting going on it again.
No doubt a pair of 160s will fly it great. I fitted mine for Tacon 160s (same specs) after doing a bunch of testing on a 17lb ESM FW190. The Anton was very fun to fly with absolutely no shortage of power! It was tuff on batteries though.
Thought seriously about a pair of Rimfire 50CCs on the -38, just so the motors wouldn't have to work so hard, but they weigh way too much. Although I had NO problems with the Tacons, not sure I want to run them in this plane, so they are going on the Tigercat. Picked up a pair of Scorpion FAI motors, and hope to do some prop testing early this season. Thinking the 20X13X3 carbon props made to be run on these (and other) FAI motors will look right at home on the -38, and should give pretty good performance with good flight times on 10S. We shall see!
No worries on video, didn't even notice. BTW you are #33

Hope everyone had a nice Easter!
Been quite here again, hope you guys have been able to get out and fly. Got out Saturday, but it was pretty gusty, 90 degrees to the runway. Flew the Mustang anyways, but nothing else
Been slow in the shop past few weeks, but did get some work done on the NP-38. I was planning on dark or med green with no strips to play down the squared off bottom corners of the booms, but I really like D-Day strips on Lightnings. In typical fashion, could not leave well enough alone, and decided to round them off. Did NOT want to spend a lot of time on this, so I'm just adding some triangle stock, thicker bottom sheet, and sanding away.
I'm using Hanger 9 4.5" main tires, and they take a lot of room in the booms when retracted. Routing ridged pushrods to the elevator and rudder was going to be a problem, so going to keep the flex rods and move the servos just aft of the main wheels (when retracted). Pretty sure I just pushed the CG aft a bit, so will likely be making the nose cone removable with a tray for a 3rd battery just above the nose gear to help balance it out.
Pix attached show rough shaping/sanding. Have bit more sanding to do, and recover

Regarding hooking up the tail surfaces on the NP P-38... I used pull-pull on the rudders and just one servo on one boom using their pushrod set up to run the elevator. I did not install retracts.. not sure worththe effort. DGM

Well its been a long long time, however I am back on my P38 It was about 11 years ago when I finished making molds of my P38. I wanted a decent size that I could put in my SUV without having to haul a trailer. I originally flew the prototype with a pair of Zenoah G26, and of course lighter gas engines have come a long way since then. A pair of DLE20s would have created a much lighter flyer. Anyways, projects after projects and the good news is I am close to putting together an electric version that I had spec'ed out 7 years ago. Using a pair of AXi 5330 and Jeti Spin ESC.
This P38 is pretty much a composite airframe with a 1 piece center section that includes the inner wing, nacelles, pod and the horizontal stab. The outer panels is hollow composite using vacuum bagged method. It is exactly 1/7 scale at 89" wingspan. I am predicting around 22-25lbs AUW for the electric version. My goal with this build is to place the flight pack closer to the center of the airframe an not out in the nacelles.

Wow Vic! That thing should haul with those motors and at that weight. I can't wait to see it finished.
70ragtop,
I really love your posts. As an electric guy myself, I find them very informative!
I don't have a 38 myself... But I do own two other kits made by Vic...his work is second to none! I think I want one of everything he makes! Lol
no seriously I do....

Good to see some life back here!
Casey, thanks. I've been eyeing Vic's LA-7 and P-51B for a while now. He makes some really very nice looking semi-kits
Ronald, Looks like you have some very nice planes there, welcome!
DGM, I know, not sure it is either. I really shouldn't buy sport-scale models, always end up starting down the "rivet counting" path vs just flying it. I do have to say, this thing has the potential to be a fun "take everytime" plane ( lots of power/speed, light wing loading) Hope it doesn't need to fly nose down at speed to keep from constantly climbing with that flat bottom wing....LOL. I have high hopes, just need to stop modifying it and finish it already...
Vic, welcome. That is an impressive build! I too was looking for the "right" size P-38 that I could comfortably fit in my car, and I checked out your P-38 model serveral times, wondering what happened. Great to see you back on it, and looking forward to learning a few things from a fiberglass master! Hope you will share some progress pictures and info. Looks like you've got a real winner there!

Thanks for the comps Rag and Casey, I am targeting the West Coast Festival event at the end of May, so I really need most of the build done this month and painting middle of next month. Its been a long wait but I am glad the P38s are back on course. I will add more pics when its closer to finishing.
I am wondering what size packs I can use with the AXi that will be decent speed and duration, What flight time would I expect from a 10S 5000mah
One of the reason I do not offer the P38 is because it takes me too much time to produce a kit.

I found the original post I made in 2003, its awesome that RCU saves all the post and its entirety, thanks RCU.

The P38 was my second mold and I remember it was a pretty challenging project. I was afraid if the wing and stab had incorrect incidence the mold would have to be trashed, however it flew great until an engine out on its second flight and had to prematurely land it. To make matter worst it was my first gas motors.
