@70 Ragtop
By the way, awesome find on that F-14!!
Yes its on my wish list too but Im thinking of the bigger SM model when I can get there. Right now Im finishing up a Eurofighter and then one of my all time favorites is the F-4D which I have waiting to begin.

My son has a Top Flite 60 size Mustang with the same setup... eFlite 90, Castle Ice 100 and 6s 5000mah batteries. His has just gotten to "test ready" status (my Lightning completion will follow the Mustang).

I think we'll try the MA 16x10 trimmed to 15x10 on it and go from there.

Question: I just looked at MA's site. These props appear to be "plastic". Is there a best method to trim them?

I use template. measure with a caliper for the layout, then use a belt sander to shape them. Finish up by hand, as I balance.

Do the math and peak voltage on 8S is 33.6 X 325KV = 10920RPM
Thats 77% or 23% loss how ever you want to call it.
APC claims 9062RPM to be their safe limit so this guy is enjoying this set up because its spot on for what it is.

We're getting the same result
Nominal voltage 3.7 per cell =29.6
Efficiency between 85-90 (higher in the air, lower on the ground)

29.6x 325=9620 no load speed

8380 is 87% efficient

Should be closer to 90-92% efficient in flight.

We've been saying the same thing all along

I've been eyeing the smaller Extreme F4, in VF-84 or coarse. That's a nice plane, you doing the larger one, or the Extreme?

Just took a quick look at the VarioProps. Would we save ourselves a lot of time by going that route... get the prop diameter we want and adjust the pitch to suit the setup?

Most of my 38 is presto chrome, put on panel at a time. But there are also sections were I used Aluminium paint as did the real one at the museum. I do have video of it flying and Ill try and post it this weekend.

Looks very nice. Would you mind posting some close up pictures of the presto covering. Interested in how the panel lines look. I was looking at Dyna skin as a possibility, the Presto looks pretty similar. How hard was it to form large pieces like the gun doors?

Great looking plane

I bought the larger one in plain white. Having a very hard time deciding on the scheme, either SEA Camo D model or VF-96 Showtime 100 J model. Love them both!!

Here are some pics showing the panel detail. I used a soldering iron with a brass tip to burn in the rivets. Then I used black chalk to make the rivets stand out and the panel lines. I was lucky the full scale 38 had the hard to cover areas painted aluminum.

WB-1, I thought you sold the Corsair?? They come along every now and then, one just sold on Ebay on Saturday, and another one a couple weeks ago....they're out there. I agree with Chris, if your ready to buy, should post a want ad. I bet there's even a few out there built, and never flown

Airman, very nice!
Did you scuff up the Presto on any on the panels? Curious if it can be scuffed up with steel wool to make individual panels stand out? I have to add panel lines back on my Yellow (wreck repair), and I'm curious if I can create panel lines by creating a slight gap, or an overlay of the Presto, or Dynaskin, vs adding panel lines with primer? I'm trying very hard to be weight conscience, and as we all know, primer and paint can get heavy quick if you're not careful

70, no i got tiered of guys wanting it for nothing so i pulled the add . like everyone , i look for good deals ,but i got a constant stream of insulting offers. like the other day i got a 1000.00 offer for 2,300 worth of stuff . please ! As far as buying built... i prefer to build it myself. i don't mind starting over with a new project if it's what i want to do.

Gentlemen...

What's the best US dealership for VarioProp? Is there a good selection of spinners that will work with them (sized for the TF 60 Mustang and VQ Lightning specifically)?

My gun barrels were made with brass tubing. Used a drill press to cut the vent holes in the tube.
No I did not scuff up the presto, Most of the surface on Marge is Polished Aluminium so the presto was a perfect match. On the wing I did leave a gap and brushed black chalk in the gap to give it the look of a panel line. You can scuff presto, I would recommend buying a roll and give it a try to see if its the look you want.

I really like those props, obviously I'm spinning them too fast for scale. But, if you shoot for a no load RPM (Motor's KV rating times volts you plan to run) of around 6500-6800, you've got a great prop option for scale flight, while using very little power. That means longer flight time with less batteries. 5 minute flight used 2.78ah from batteries
I just watched the video again. Your scale like speed at 2-3 mins is exactly what I'm hoping for! It also makes me think that the 87mph radar gun speed that we got on our VQ FW-190 was alot higher than it's actually speed! My eflite 90's have a no load rpm of 8190 on 6s/25.2v. How do you think they'd do with those 15.75x13 props?

That's what I was thinking. The APC props on your 90s are perfect pitch vs RPM for that performance, BUT the motors will be over their rated power. Will they do it....probably. Will the motors be happy....maybe. Will the motors be happy behind spinners with no direct cooling air....doubtful

Nominal voltages, and 85-90% efficiency, higher in the air, lower on the ground would be

22.2 volts times 325KV = 7215

7215 times .9 (efficiency losses) =6493. That's roughly 70 MPH prop speed at 13 pitch

This is just my opinion, but if we go by the ratings, I think your motors are a little small at 123 watts per pound, to stay within rated Amps, spin big three blade props, and still have strong performance. Two blade electric props, should be fine. Large three blade props need the extra power

The APC props pull hard, they don't unload until the plane is really moving. It takes a good amount a power to spin them, but they pull the plane very hard
MA props are pretty inefficient and unload a lot. This can be helpful on IC engines get to into the RPM up where it needs to be to make power. On electric, they do the same thing, they let the RPM increase so the motors don't pull so many amps. I think this is what is going to work on your setup. G sonics are very nice props, but they have a very small camber, great electric sport prop, not a great speed prop. I would look at those as well, although they have a large blade profile that might not look right on a 80" plane

The Vario props can be purchased directly thru Ramoser. I'm not aware of a US dealer

Chris,

I can provide 3d printed gun barrells in just about any diameter and length you need. Shoot me an email if you're interested in the details.

I hear you. Was selling a TF B-25 a while back, had one guy right out of the gate who wanted it. Gave him my number and I thought we had a deal, then he starts telling me what its really worth. He offers me less than half of what I wanted....and I didn't want much. He went on and on and on trying to change my mind after I told him I'll just keep it. Then the emails, and PMs, finally the right guy saw the ad, sold for asking $.

I most likely don't have anything you want, or I would trade you something for it. It looked like you were doing a great job on the build! Been a big fan of Byron stuff for a long time

Very nice, I was going to do the tube inside a tube thing as well, but your idea is very intriguing. How much are you selling a set of guns for a 1/6 scale P-38?

Airman

Thanks for the pix. I just noticed you have fowlers on your Yellow model...very nice. Would you mind sharing how you did them?
