Well, I guess it's time to get signed up in the P-38 Brotherhood. Been a fan of the P-38 for years and built a couple as well. My first was a Wing Mfg with a pair of .46s. The I built a G&L Hobbies version, but sold it before I ever flew it. A couple of years ago, I put together a small JR Models version with XT 400 electric motors. I am now in the build process on another Wing Mfg version with electric power. I also "had" a 96" version of the CBA kit that I let slip thru my hands.

Aloha,
I tried to go to JR Hobbies web site and pre order the model...but unable to find how to pre order the P-38. I would like a kit myself and wonder if its an exact copy of the VQ model. If so...great. I would also like a set of retracts to go with the model. Are the retracts electric of pneumatic? Nothing beats good electric retracts, for they are less complicated in operation and no other equipment needed to make them work.
What type of finish...Super Monakote?...I pray its not the same shelf paper covering that most of VQ models come with. This covering is imposable to repair or to re -shrink...it really sucks. I've built several VQ models over the years (my last one is the A26 Invader) and really do not like this type of covering at all. If the model comes with the old VQ shelf paper covering...would it be possible to order a airframe, ready to cover-or uncovered?
Pm me when the models are ready to ship...and I'll take one, with the retractable landing gear.
Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Here's a few pics of my build so far. This was started a couple years ago and I am just getting back to it. I am using 105 degree nose gear and 100 degree mains. I am also using "close" to scale size wheels. Not going to super scale, but I want it to look "right". I am adding a bit larger tri-stock in the corners of the booms, so they can be a little more rounded out, and less slab-sided. I will post more pics as I go. Feel free to ask any questions, as I probably won't post a lot of details.

Looking good. Good to see the Spring Air Retracts. I've used those for 25 years or so, and never have one problem, great product! I had experience with the Robart version this season in a Deuces Wild, and spring air cylinders in a set of Robart 635's, and I can honestly say, I am not a fan.
If anyone's shopping for retracts, do yourself a favor, and check out the original Spring Air's

Thanks for the welcome.
The original owner first tried 4-stroke 70s, but wasn't happy so he went to Saito 120s, and yes it was great fun in the air. But it was way heavy, he had to switch to 105 degree mains to get it to rotate. And getting it to slow down to land was hard. I suffered a high speed inverted tip stall, and everything in front of the wing was gone. I bought the three fiberglass pieces from KMP, I could reuse the horizontal stab, and I cut a foam wing with an inch more chord and a couple of inches more in span, and I'm switching to 20cc gassers. Just need to finish the outer wing panel to get it back in the air.

Please contact James via their website.
I tried the link too. It looks like he's just starting to update his website with the P-38 info. I'm in IT... I figure it'll probably take a few more days for JBH to get everything working.
The great news is that we have another option to feed our illness! :-)

Heres a link to JB's website, and VQ's. Finally found MA magazine, and that looks a lot like a VQ P-38, with the same specs! Same plane with a new importer?? The retracts listed on the website look pretty light weight for a 15-20# plane...IMHO. That's not a good start

You make a good point. That gear set prolly won't work on a 15lb-20lb plane... especially if you fly off of a grass strip like we do.
It sounds like an updated version of the VQ that I have. The VQ has gotten great reviews for it's flight characteristics from experienced pilots here in RC Universe. If the airframe is good, the gear aren't a deal-breaker. Just buy the gear that you trust.
My older VQ has Robart air. I'd prefer electric, but hadn't found a set that I had confidence in.

I have build the ziroli p38 and now flying over 1.5 years. Glad to have the twinsync and fowlers on it. The bird is 21kg but you can really come in slow. Sorry for the quality.

Awesome!
Ronald can you show how you made the fowler flap mechanism?
Those are so powerful. The YA 38 lands slow without flaps Ive learned but the flaps are conventional. Id really like to improve on the flaps later on so its more scale when deployed.
Anything you can share about the build Id love to see.
