Stuck the gear in it to do some power checks, and taxi/brake tests today. It's getting close!
Chris, are you going to be able to post, or email a couple pictures from that book?? Want to head back over to the garage and finish up the paint and weathering
Thanks

Ragtop, I just finished complaining on another thread about taking on too many projects and not completing any of them. The one aviation related project is the scratch built P38 sport flyer. So in response to your request here are a couple pics on where I am at. Of course I will update as I get closer to maiden.

I would like to be counted in on this... The P-38 has always been my favorite war bird, been saving my pennies and when I had gotten enough they had discontinued the model I wanted. So can anyone recommend one that is a good flyer...

Looks good, I hear you about too many projects! All I can say is good thing its just a hobby, and it really doesn't matter when we finish, and long as it is enjoyable. Now with that said, I really wish I could get some projects done and in the air

Welcome
The VQ P-38 is being imported to the states under the name Legion Models by JB Hobbies. First few of this latest version are starting to fly, and just like the earlier version(s), flight reports are very good. Just a few building issues to be addressed. There is an active thread over on RCG http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...74566&page=191

70 RagTop... Going to be saving my pennies again. Looking forward to reading about other builds so I can gain intel from other people.

My update:
We got the engines back from VVRC and the right hand DLE35RA has been moded for counter rotation.
Im looking for a laquer spray can of Zinc Chromate that looks right.
Im going to order Zinger L/R 3 blade 18X8 props and a set of 2 blade.
I have to paint the wings, doors and canopy frame silver.
I have laquer flat black and olive drab spray cans.
So, making slow progress but I have a deadline coming soon so it will be done and flown again.

Fried a servo while I was working on configuring the landing gear sequence so I have to push back the projections for first flight. Probably best so I go thru and double check everything anyway.

Congrats on getting it outside and Good luck with the run-ups.
When you have it running post some stats..
I have a P-39 project standing by for the same type of motor and prop combination.

It's all done, ready to maiden, just waiting on another set of blades. Had it out yesterday doing some runs and getting some measurements. The Scorpions I chose when I was looking at 18" props are not up to the task of spinning the 20's. I expect them to unload some in the air, and they may work, but I'm not going to risk it out of the gate. Put a set of 18" blades back on it, and the numbers are fine. Was able to get 5460 RPM at just over 3500 watts statically with the 20's 14 pitch dialed in. With the 18s also with 14 pitch dialed in, got just under 6300 RPM and 2777 watts.
The 18s will be fine in flight, should unload another 1000-1500 RPM, and I may be able to dial in a little more pitch...if so desired
There's lots of pix on the RCG build thread, but here are a few. Was going to try and re-maiden it this week, but will likely be a couple weeks to get blades for the other side
How big is the P-39?

P-39
The P-39 project is an all wood 25lbs 80" wingspan.
Its ready for the motor, bat & electronics selection and install but I need to redo the ailerons using a different strategy for (no hardware) showing. The current belcrank setup has too much play and they will flutter.
The spinner is open at the top for the cannon barrel and I already cut holes in the backplate to allow cooling back to the motor.. The backplate on this is thin but I did drill diagonally anyway.
I am thinking the 18's look like the safer option for you right now -"6300 RPM and 2777 watts"
The motor combination I was going to try with the vario 20'sx3 is the AXI 5345/16 using a Castle 120ESC.
I was waiting to see how the 20's worked on your setup before I ordered the prop.
I only have exp. with gas engines using 3 or 4 blade variable pitch props. In those instances I dialed in the engines using 2 blade props and then adjusted the pitch until I was happy with the engine response. On gassers 18's seem to work best in the 50cc range. The 18's deliver scale with just enough for emergencies where as the 20x3 blades pull them way down into a much smaller window of opportunity.
p.s. There is a P-38 way in the background of the real photo.

Wow, beautiful job! Did you hand paint the nose art? Looks great!
I think the AXI's would have no problem spinning the 20" varioprop, and would be quite powerful/fast if you wanted it to be. Going 10S, or 12?
I knew the Scorpions were going to be questionable with the big props, but should be fine with the 18s. On my smaller P-38, I did a bit of prop testing, and it is amazing how some brand props unload, and others do not. I was banking on the varios unloading some. I'm sure there is a sweet spot (speed/drag vs power/pitch), and I'll likely go back and revisit after gaining some experience with the 18s.
Then again, I might like it with the 18s and call it good

Where in RSCB is the build thread? Sorry about all the questions, I'm a little late to the party.
Nice work!

It's a Yellow rebuild...crashed on its gas maiden, rebuilt as electric. Yup, counter rotating adjustable pitch Varioprops . Here is the rebuild thread http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...274813&page=16

Wow. That's an incredible rebuild. I've never seen anyone reassemble a fiberglass fuse like that. Amazing work... I browsed through the pics and read a little. I will be spending more time reading through it in depth for sure. Being in CT, how did you come about it if the wreckage took place in AL?
Very well done. You should be proud.

Thanks, its was a fun rebuild. Tried a few new things, and learned a lot.
I was looking thru classifieds one night, and found an old ad for used landing gear. Looked a little harder and found he was giving the wreck away if you purchased the gear...but only if you picked it up. We spoke a few times, and he was nice enough to agree to cut the booms off, box it all up, and ship by Greyhound.
