Tony,
A flyer in our club had the EME starter on a DLE55 in a Corsair. While in flight the shaft on the starter broke, taking out he prop and cowl. Great dead stick landing! It will fly again.

I've had 2 EME55's with starters, and fitted starters to a DLE55 and a DLE55RA. I've had them running for over a year and never had a problem like that... I did kill the 550 motor trying to hand flip the engine when the Lipo died. $20 for a replacement from MileHighRC... I even had one on my GS TF FW190 at a Scale Masters event in AZ and took 3rd place in ProAm Sportsman. The judges were confounded when I cut the engine on the run way and asked the tower for clearance to start her up and take off...

Frank;

You have the Zero now as well?, do you think the EME Starter will fit in the Cowl? I'm currently putting together FW190 with the Starter and have the Zero on the way to put together after the FW190; I won't get the EME Starter for the Zero if it doesn't fit in the Cowl like it does on the FW190.

Thanks.

I have three starter setups and luv em. Others were waiting to see how they performed
This is the second season and no problem. Use a 800-3S and it will last all weekend.
Two friend just installed new EME starters for DLE111 and did great in early test a couple of weeks ago.
When they saw advertisement they immediatly ordered two and were told they would have to wait for first production Ha, Add was ahead of production, imagine that
They both are building 120" Skyraiders.
Main gears are to close to allow fake engine cylinders etc unless an extension is used, least in my experience.

heres a pic of the DLE55RA that arrived today so I installed it and put a spare starter assembly on it... it definitely fits the cowl!

It's already being lauded and criticized in another Warbird Thread.

Thank you very much I added it to my favorites. Unfortunately it will not work on my zero because I didn't build it having it in hand prior to assembly. But the next Warbird will definitely will have it

Electric starter install.. so easy, even I can do it!
Steps:
  • order starter from MileHighRC
  • wait patiently for the mailman
  • tackle mailman on your lawn and find your package from MileHighRC
  • unbox everything...
  • remove prop shaft from motor (1/2 deep socket)
  • use gear puller to slide prop hub off motor
  • remove woodruff key
  • install new woodruff key
  • slide spacer onto shaft (cafeful with the key)
  • put the starter assembly onto motor
  • install Sprague gear
  • install prop hub
  • tighten new prop shaft with 13mm deep socket
  • mount on plane!!!!

Went and flew the zero today... wow... very good ground handling... faster than my TF GS FW190 with the same motor and prop. my only complaint is that the electric gear take way too long to cycle... I'm used to regulated air systems on my FW190.

she goes fast w/ the DLE55RA w/ a Xoar 22X10 2 blade! she goes slow with no bad tendencies. she'll stall to the left wing (tested way up) and easy to recover if you have the altitude. she floats in like a P-47 and tracks straight as an arrow.

The big hit was really, really, big loops on the dead line. I had 5 planes fly the length of the runway and I came back in behind them - Guns, Guns, Guns! haha

The electric starter was great but I chipped a tooth on the Sprague gear (one way gear) when the motor kicked back on choke... The epoxy failed on the cowl so I'm going to try that again with silicone next.

You guys are going to love to fly this plane!

What did you have to attach to the cowl with epoxy?

I've built about 8 of the TF warbird arf's and none of them have anything glued to the cowl except the plastic motor and the P-47 has the oil cooler plastic piece. None have a piece of wood glued to the cowl. Is the Zero cowl different?

Lifer? my FW 190 and the Zero have a cowl ring (made of wood) that you epoxy to the cowl and that bolts to the firewall (on the zero, there's a cowl mount ring that gets epoxied to the firewall first.

someone suggested I use silicone.. hope it'll work better

Use shoe goop. Much better than silicone.

Sparky,

My error. Thanks for the correction. Can use mix milled fiberglass with the epoxy to help the adhesion?

How is the starter actuated? They offer a controller, what does it do?

It has a battery input ( I use a 3s 2200MAh lipo) a lead to the brushed 550 motor (starter) and a lead to your rcvr. You put the channel on a momentary switch and it signals the starter unit to send a 1.5 second pulse to the starter motor. when I first got it I was being cheap (1 1/2 years ago) and tried to rig a servo to a power switch but that failed miserably when the switch locked (burned) in the connected state and I couldn't disengage it... $30 is worth the switch made for this setup!
