Hi Frank it was great seeing you again along with Capt's G and Ron. I missed you on Sunday or I should say my Spitfire missed your Fw-190, it had little to shoot at! :-). I have been remiss in not asking to join this esteemed group of warbird drivers. Here is a picture of of my lonely Spitfire, thanks to Tony Quist for taking it and sharing.

I must admit that when I fist saw this brotherhood go up I didn't think much of it. But when I met Frank at Warbirds Over The Rockies, got to know him, and got to see him fly I have a new found respect for him. My hat is truly off to him. He was out there bending the sticks on his planes when everybody else was hiding in the tents because of a little cold and wet conditions. Frank, you are "da man"!!!!

Stuff huge engines into small airframes and turn them into clouds of balsa dust making them do un-natural things you say.....

Sounds like my kind of place.

While I have a few warbirds on the building table both ARF and Kits I havent flown for a while. So I pulled the trusty old .40 sized high wing trainer off the shelf, blew the dust off it and converted it to tail dragger, dual aileron servo's, fitted a Super Chipmunk rudder and enlarged the elevator by around 50%. I am now in the process of bolting a .91 4 stroke on it. I may have to substitute that for a DLE-20 or OS GT22 if I can't get the wings to explode in a vertical climb.

frank i would love to join!

i had a zeroli corsair, built from the plans for the geared down 60/90 alcahol burner. i had a Magnum 40 in it(that was before the magnim you are thinking about. it was my first gasser and i would bring it to the feild and fly it 8-10 times a day (10 minutes each). one of those times the guy whoo hounded me to get a gasser comes over and tells me your gona wear that motor out in a year at that rate. wear out a motor, he's full of shhhhhaving cream so i continued. first year i owned it i put 368 flights on it. the next year it was abit lacking in power, and the year after that even less power. and this went on for over twn years, the amount of flights varied with the amount of power it had. the final straw was i brought it to a flyin on a new york hot summer day, 95degrees F, close to 100% humidity, and i had to make two circuits of the field to get high enough to dive to do manuvers. i had a g62 that had just become available. no, no i tell you, i sold the plane it was in. thats my story and im sticking to it! so i mounted the G62 and off we went. i know that its tomuch motor for that plane. i'll be gentile on the throttle. first fly in i went to it was blasting everyone off the runway. it was awsome!

my radio was mounted between the wings and it was accessed by a hatch under the wing. if you never built a stringer plane when you make hard points for , like hatch screws (just an example, of coaurse) you fill in the atra between the stringers then tap it. well these fill ins where coming loose so i reglued them and off the the flying field. oh did i mention the wings folded too.

after turning on my plane by pushing the switch mounted on that hatch i had just fixed to the on position, i taxied to the center of the runway, checked all my controlls and advanced the throttle. she tracked streaght and true as always and as i rotated i saw what looked like a leaf blow out from under my plane. the plane imediatly nosed down enough that it was going down very slowly. and i had no control. it landed at full tilt, i got to watch the LG come up throgh the gull's and it hit so shallow that the prop just broke away leaving the g62 just whininh to beet the band. i got out there and hit the kill switch and it worked but the rest of the stringer built plane was just a bag of broken wood.
may i have #34 please

Joe

I've lost a rudder and elevator in an overpowered Hangar 9 P-47... with a 13.75X12 4blade on my foray into electrics with a 40 35 - 300KV on 8S... it was fun to hear and see it accelerate through 125MPH going straight up!... too bad I didn't get the feathers tight enough...

Good news, gents! I've been eating Cup o' Noodles for a few weeks and finally put enough scratch together to buy the DA 100 inline twin for my Clark Spitfire... The Merlin II (2 Sachs 52's shoehorned together by John Clark) rattled itself apart for the last time...

I'm excited but concerned that the DA twin is 4 inches shorter and 4lbs lighter than the Merlin II... It's gonna require some engineering that may prove too much for my bashing skillz. I'll have to figure out how to a)build an engine box to push the engine forward but not to far as the front cylinder will run out of room (chin of the cowl) sooo b) I'll have to find an appropriate prop hub extension. Sierra giant actually makes a 2 inch prop extension but I've seen warnings that it'd put too much stress on the front bearing...

anyway... once the engine is in I'm going to have to find a way to get the CG right so you may soon see a pic of my Spit flyin with a cinder block hanging off a nose crane 3 feet in front of the plane - lol.
