I know it most likely ranges based on want, but for the average person looking to build one, what would you say?

Hello Fellow P-39 Aficionados

I have finished glassing and sanding my wing and am about to put down the panel lines, my drawings are pretty small and I am having some difficulty trying to figure out how far to put the two parallel lines apart. The line look to be where the spar is, my 1/72 scale drawing has them just under a 3/64th apart which when converted to 1/5th would have them about 0.675 apart. That would translate into just over 3 and third inches on the full scale. Does that should about right? Does anyone have some good drawings and can advise? Thanks

Looks good! I might like to get in on this. I am in the process of buying back my UN-completed Top Flite P-39 from the LHS. Missing the box full of goodies and plans and manual. But right now, I'm just trying to save the fuse and wing from getting trashed anymore than it has already. LHS just went through a ownership change and the new owners gave me a good price to get my model back so I took them up on it.

Did you pull a canopy already, or already get the help you needed? If not, PM me and I'll give you my phone number. I built my own vacuum forming machine (pictured being used in my "Trinity Build" thread linked in my initial response). While I'm no professional, I've made my initial mistakes and can at least save you some of the learning curve with this process, if no one with more experience else has helped you, yet.

With some help from the drawings that Terry sent me I put down some panel lines on the bottom of the wings. Things are not exactly to scale, but they do look to be in the ball park. The leading edge intakes for the radiator and oil coolers are a bit to far from center, but the shape of the wing dictated the placement. All in all it looks to be an improvement from the original ESM wing.

These were taken after I wet sanded the primer down to the tape, I used 1/32 as it is pretty close to the lines on the fuse. The big gaping hole is where the speakers will be located. I have grating that fills in most of the whole, after final paint, markings and some weathering, they will be less visable, I hope :-)

Rick, what brand primer do you like to use for sanding off? also do you have a supplier[ website] for 1/32" chart tape. i can not find it here [ N.H.] locally at all. don

The primer is Duplicolor High Fill Primer, I get it from O'Reilly Autoparts. Regarding the tape, I got mine from Amazon, a couple of years ago, I got an Amazon Prime account and its shocked me how much I use it. I think I got the one for 1.85 black, I ordered 4 rolls of the 1/64 and 4 of the 1/32. Whoever put the rolls in the envelope rolls wasn't that careful, as I got 6 and 5 respectively :-)

Well, I officially paid for my P-39 and got it back from the hobby shop yesterday. Nose ring aft to firewallis broken off and lost. Wingtip is also gone. Still have the Robart LG main retracts and the Nosegear retract strut still in the fuse.

Update: RPRCBuilder has completed the ready to cover construction of one of the P-39s. Now it is up to me to cover and finish for flight. All radio equipment is installed. We went with a fixed gear and flaps for the young flyers in our squadron, and a 10cc Evolution gas engine.

I have been building a Top Flite GE kit for ... so many years With very limited time and lots of ambitious modifications it takes a lot of time, however it is an joyful voyage...

I have modified the rudder hinge line, bottom half of aft fuselage (made it more rounded) wing fillets, ailerons, and most important nose section. I had molded the complete nose section and produced fiberglass parts for cowl and front landing gear compartment and doors for LG.
I also molded the rudder and elevator (with scale hinge lines). Also 12 stack exhaust stubs are molded and made from resin. I will use a RCV 90 SP and the bird will be finished as COBRA II racer... I actually have a build thread in RCSB if anyone is interested.

WARBIRDRCER, I see that you made a plug and Vac-form new canopies, are you planning to sell canopies? if so I am interested to get one as my canopy was ruined at the time I get my kit, and TF does not have any replacements... I had started to make a fiberglass mold for the frame and was planning to make the canopy with clear sheets glued to this fiberglass frame, but if it is available one piece vac-formed canopy would be much better...

Looks much better than the original but I have learned my lesson well... If you want scale, build from a scale plan or scratch It is much harder to modify a kit to look "more" scale...

I'd like to be signed up as well. I have 2 yellow box kits, 1 red box kit, and a GE plan set. I haven't built any of them yet, but I'm gearing up. With so many P-39s, I thought it might be a good idea to make some extra cockpit kits for them. I started with an original TF Airacobra kit but was very disappointed with the parts they supplied, so I'm making my own molds and ther****rming new parts. Top Flite really took some liberties with that cockpit kit. They brought stand off scale to a new low. Anyway, please sign me up.
