Finally got some more progress to show. The rudder is ready for paint, the picture does not show it well however there is pinking tape on it and also the Elevators and Ailerons. The cockpit is a wrap and the Canopy is ready to be glued on. The most tedious job of wiring the gear and running all the fuselage wires is done and the radio gear is waiting for its final install and testing. Last and not least is the nose gear door assembly is installed and sequenced. Once the canopy goes on and gets sanded and fitted, this girl is off to the paint shop.

Just found a Top Flite P39 and purchased it going to start my build when it gets here. Will be my 2nd one should have never sold the last one. Best flying warbird I ever had. Maybe Top Flite will take notice.

P-39 Brothers, I mentioned in an earlier post about making some cockpit kits for this plane and I think I can safely say they're available (Thanks for urging me to the finish line Don!)
These kits will fit Yellow/Red box and Gold Edition kits. PM me for more info if interested.

I would like to be in the brotherhood. Have a TF gold edition, Pepino plans and Sierra gear for them. At one time I had a stafford and a redbox P39. It's always been one of my favorite aircraft.

I am currently scratch building a p-39 from parts tracings from an old red box kit. I have cut the wing cores from foam and have modified the nose eliminate the plastic top deck and replace it with a built up balsa an ply structure. I am now making cowls top/bottom by carving foam and then glassing.
If anyone is interested I can post photos of my progress to date.
i do have one question regarding gear length. My torn up old plans don't enable me to measure the gear length for the mains or the nose gear. Does anyone here have a decent set that they could take those measurements for me and post them here. Thanks in advance if you can help on this.

Hi Terry,
Motor is the E-Flite 160 on 12S I have several 6 cell batteries that will go in this one. The sound system is the Bendini with the Alison sound track. I am hoping to use a 17X10 Prop as I am hoping it will have enough thrust, and 18X8 is a backup but I would prefer the pitch for a tad more speed.
Cheers

Thanks to warbird51 for the dimensions on the length of the nose gear. Thought you might be interested in seeing the current status of my build of the old red box 39 from my modified plans. I have used foam core wings and a built up fuse to replace the old plastic section which as you all know is no longer available. The tank is in and am now doing the preliminary radio install/pushrods. Then the fillets and bottom sheeting. Then I should be ready to glass and paint. This build is intentionally old school - upright 2S motor, fixed gear, no flaps. I hoping this will become my daily flyer to replace my aging kaos which is now almost 20 years old. I have attched some pictures - hope they come thru.
Pic1 - built up nose using balsa and pink foam
Pic2 - cockpit/canopy area (was lucky enough a few years ago to get a canopy from a fellow here on RCU
Pic3 - beefed up tail (1/4 framing with 1/16 sheeting)
Pic4 - wing tips carved from foam - glassing should protect this
For some reason the upload changed the order of the pictures but I think from the photos you can figure which is which

Thought I would also post a few photos of my Gold Edition P-39 which has been sitting here in my shop untouched for over a year. Must somehow get the ambition to get back to it. This is powered by an OS 91FX and has Robart retracts including the fancy dancy nose gear.
Not much left to do except basicall glass and paint. But will probably wait until the old red box version is ready and then glass both at the same time. Also need to come up with paint schemes for both of them. Any suggestions?
Just noticed that I must have crunched this somehow as the canopy has a wrinkle in it. Now have to figure out how to get rid of that.

ByronF, Great looking plane. To all of the persons who are part of this Brotherhood, sorry for my absence. I have been busy with may plane projects trying to make since of them all. I will try harder to stay in touch more often, and with winter coming that may make it easier.

Simple,
Looks like you got a Dean. Monticelle? P-39. I don't know how to spell his last name. He doe's some great work. I had corresponded with him when I was building a Dave Platt T-28. He also built one. Be sure to let us know how it flies.

Well the 39 was completed and was killed on its maiden, lost the elevator and the loss was complete. I was moving the batteries around on the night before the final for C of G and my theory is that the servo connection was loosened. Roll control and throttle seemed to work, but she just pitched down and would not respond to any input, it just went down and hit was real hard.
Battery hatch was in front of the cockpit, As you can see the pilot was still in trauma :-)

Masser - yes Dean let this go and its been with a friend of mine who isn't going to finish it either so now its my turn.
I have an issue with taking on projects that others have decided may not be worth the effort.
The P-39 build is amazing and I am excited to have it but there is allot to do to get this flight ready. There is nothing for a battery box or or hatches for fast access, cooling duct work etc..
I am just now starting to explore what I want my flying prop to look like so I can determine the electronics. In the threads Dean was going to spin a giant 24" three blade Zinger prop and use a giant motor. That motor was not in the plane when I got it.
Like Dean I am new to Electrics but I want to explore a possible different approach for power and prop combination. I found the Vario prop online and I think that will actually look really good. Does anyone have any experience with them?
AZThud - Bummer of the highest level. Gremlins in these old birds. Where were you flying?
This will be my third P-39, the other two had similar flying gremlins and no longer exist.

Simple,
How big is the plane?. How much does it weigh? Never tried electric motors. But in this case, because of the slender nose section, you'd be able to fit the entire engine in the engine compartment.
Does Dean fly very much?
AZThud,
What a terrible first flight. To bad.

Forgot to mention, my ESM P-39 "Public Relations" was in action this past August 2014 at "West Texas Warbirds" and was awarded Best Scale Flight. Great event and a really good group of guys out in Lubbock, TX.
