Aug 2, Giant scale flyin at MVRCC at Oterbein, Ohio.
Miles: 13
An asphalt and grass runway leased from the Oterbein retirement community. Close to home so I already knew all the pilots.
Mike, Tony, Doug and Jim (CD) with their airplanes.
The weather has gotten back to the usual 60's/80's (low/high) from the unusual 50's/70's cool weather (unusual summer).

Aug 2/3, GCRCC circus at Butler county airport.
Miles: 15
One of my local clubs puts on an annual show for the general public (5 bucks a carload). Fifty pilots had 200 planes to run the show from 11:45 to 4 PM with planes in the air constantly. A very good participation by the club as, virtually, all the pilots are from the club and each pilot has to provide the plane and fuel. Each event ran about 10 minutes. A very large crowd showed up each day. The airport is closed during this time with some very large X's put at the end of the runway and the taxi way is used for the event.

A couple full size planes were at the airport.

Man, that event looks very successful and loads of fun. Amazing how some events get tons of spectator turnout and others get so few. And yes I do realize cost and demographics play a big part but this just looked fantastic and fun to be a part of!! Good one Sammy!

Yo Scott,
This event has been going on for like at least 40 years. The show costs a good 13-15K so it's important to have good weather. The food concession, sweets, etc donated by club members cover the costs. The club contributes to the community: This year at half time, a $7,000 check was presented to spina bifida. The county airport likes it as it's good publicity plus the local newspapers run articles on the event. At just 5 bucks a carload, families will come out as it's cheap entertainment. Being at the airport, there's also plenty of room for the spectators. It's one of the few events in the country, put on by a club that caters strictly to the general public to show them what the hobby is all about.

I am happy to say that Sam was there. I am sure he will post pics as soon as he gets a chance. It was 3 days of the best weather and flying ever.

I don't think I've EVER been to an event where the temp was 79 degrees and the wind blew 5 mph RIGHT DOWN THE RUNWAY EVERY DAY for 4 days!

Amazing!

mishaps? I don't recall seeing any mishaps...LOL Yes there were a few, but if you factor in the amounts of flights then the number was small.

Hi Everyone...

anyone got any pointers for me... I've just registered for Warbirds over the Rockies and have no idea what the site is like... some questions for the pros...

1) will there be security over the weekend at the event (keep an eye on planes left of the flightline, etc?
2) is it okay to pitch a tent and sleep onsite?
3) will I get made fun of since I only fly ARFs?
4) food/water, etc onsite?
5) errr... I can't think of 5..
6) do you hang out near your trailer in the parking lot or is there an area to setup a chair and canopy?

thanks in advance...

WoTR is at a new veniew this year sparky so my knowledge of the actual flying field is nil. However...

1) As I recall there has always been security in the past. Usually there are many folks who stay on site in RV's and campers so generally there are always folks around. I assume it will be the same this year.
2) See above regarding RV's and campers. I assume if you can park an RV on site then you could probably pitch a tent as well.
3) Yes, but come fly anyway.
4) Once again there have always been one or two food vendors on site so I assume this year will be the same. None of it will be free!
5) Good, because I don't have an answer anyway.
6) There has always been room for chairs and canopies although you will most likely have to go down the flight line some distance to erect a canopy. All the "prime real estate" will be taken up with tents and spectator seating.

Obviously there are a number of assumptions in my replies above but I have a hunch Brian O'Meara or one of his associates will chime in here with some solid and reliable answers! Look forward to seeing you there sparky!

Aug 8-10: Northern alliance military flyin at Owatonna, Minn.
Miles: 1775 (including Fond du lac, which is the following week).
This is part of a 2 week trip.
A very nice vinyl type 800' runway with total grass at 1200'.
As last year, pilots get to this event early: Got there Tuesday afternoon and a dozen pilots should up on Wednesday. With 104 pilots, the pit area fills up quickly. About 95% of the planes are kits or scratch built (and usually very large)
We're always treated well with 3 meals a day.
Comfortable daytime temps in the 70's with light-moderate winds down the runway. I brought my ceramic heater for the evenings.
I got 13 flights in between the P-47 and F4U. (brought the C-45 but not all the wings for it).

Matt's nicely detailed corsair.

Hey Sam! Didn't know if you saw the vid I posted on the "NAMFI 2014" thread that had your P-47. Sorry to see the damage...something your skills will make short work of I expect! We enjoyed pitting next to you and look forward to more of the same next year!

Excellent video with some nice flying. NAMFI looks like a great event.
Finally saw Sam's jug fly. Looks very nice.

hey who took my corsair there without my permission?
That's the paint Scheme (USS Franklin). Diamond/69 that I had planned to do on my 104" royal kit. I need to get off my duff and get back on building her.
