Default Custom transport jig / maintenance stands

My buddy just picked up a Ziroli P-40 and asked me to design him a custom transport/maintenance stand. This is what I came up with so far, just a couple more tweaks and she will be good to go. I will be designing a stand for my giant scale Top Flite Corsair following this one. The stands support the aircraft in structural locations so that hangar rash and transport damage are reduced.

I will have it designed within a week or so as long as the real job does not hold me down too much!!! It will be based of the P-40 stand but tailored to the body contours and support locations of the corsair.

I saw this and had to smile and ask, who put the plane in the beer holder?

All kidding aside a nice looking set up!

Cheers

Very nice...looks like you have the basis for a new business.

Wonder how long those would take without CAD/CAM and a CNC machine?

I build cradles for all my planes too....a couple of pieces of 1/4" ply with some 1x4s tieing them together. Crude but quick.

Depending on price, I think you could sell more than a few of these for the Top Flite Warbirds and some of the more popular Ziroli's, especially the ones that do have a center section the remains on the airplane.
Are you going to do one for the Top FLite p-47?

Its a kick ***** set up and I have seen it in person just last week.
Chris designed a stand for my F-16 made with 1/4 birch ply and its tough enough that I could strap it down with tie downs in the back of my pick up. He's making a TF Corsair stand soon and Im in line for that one!

Oh! Don't miss the "cup" holder!

I can do stands for most aircraft, I typically build them when a build project comes through. It is preffered that I have the aircraft but the P-40 was designed almost completely using the plans. I am willing to work with guys on pricing that have plans that they can send me for stand development and prototyping. The corsair stand should be designed and cut by next weekend I am hoping so stay tuned!

I will start tracking down plans to various aircraft and start building up a line of stands to support these big birds. I plan on doing one for my .60 size P-47 as well.

Just an update on the Corsair stand. The CAD files are pretty much finished up so I will be programming the laser files tonight and hopefully have a stand assembled by sunday. The stand is designed to support the aircraft with the wing on (gear up) or with the wing off. There will also be two plates that drop in the top to support the plane during building and maintenance. I will post pics as things start to unfold. More to come...

Well, I have made some progress, Air Force keeps getting in the way of the fun stuff. I will be cutting more parts tonight, but here is the concept so far. The stand is going to be pretty versatile, I will post more pics tonight or tomorrow morning.

A little more progress last night, I should have remainder of parts cut tonight, then it is on the the next design! For any of you guys that are willing to loan me the plans for the Giant Top Flight, P-47, P-51, Folkwolfe etc for stand development, I would be willing to work out a deal for a stand for your bird.

Chris

Question. How do you keep the cradle from denting the wood?

The fuse will be supported by 1.5" foam strips. I still have a couple pieces to cut. Whe the wing is off it is supported at wing mountin locations.
