Kallin,

Brilliant thank you very much for the pictures they helped a lot. I have found the Varioprop on the German website and intend to go the 4 blade route. Do you get any damage to the wing around where you put the batteries when you go inverted, as they seem able to move in the vertical, or do you put foam on the wing? Mine may be a little lighter due to not having the sound system and my 3 x 3600mah(1 retract 2 powersafe rx) batteries are placed in the ready made battery box if the C of G allows. What flight times are you getting with your set up?

Awesome stuff Kalzone!

I also like the sound setup you have on board. If you have the time or interest, please post some of your sound mods you put into your P-51 here on this thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2085759

I would love to see how you outfitted your Mustang for Merlin sound, so please let us know in that thread! A bunch of us are sharing how we have made our sound setups better by optimizing the installations and various upgrades to them. I've been flying my H9 30CC Spitfire with a big sound system on board and it's a hoot. I've got a Fokke Wulf Ta-152 and an F-100D EDF with sound systems too.

PS what's your amp draw and prop pitch speed? Must be insane for those figures!

steve,

i do not have anything on the wing under the batteries. the lower 2 batteries sit on the top of the wing. when i put in the lower two batteries they slide back and fall down behind the box the has your rx and gear batteries in it. they are snug as they are between the box and the gear door servos. i have put a peice of foam on top of the two top batteries to stop them from moving.i am running the varioprop from germany im using the 16d 4blade. on that prop the max rpm is 4600 +- but im running it to max of 7000 and ive had no issues.my timer is set for 6 minuets but i dont land until the timer goes off i could get another minute or two if i dont fly with so much full throttle but thats not fun.

Hello,
I would like to know if you have any pics showing mods done to P360 and how Vario prop hub bolts to motor.? I am interested in trying a Vario 4 blade setup if simple machining required.

Thank You
Mike

Hi,

So.... I finally flew the P-51. I've gotta say that after putting three flights on her, I have to say that all of the issues I had with this ARF are now in a bit more perspective. This plane is the easiest-to-fly warbird I've ever flown. Even very nose-heavy (because I miscalculated the amount of ballast I needed and can't get it back out easily), the landing speed was ridiculously low and stable. The first landing was TOO slow and I bounced and nosed over (so glad I only had a 2-blade prop on her). The next two were probably the best landings I've ever made with a tail-dragger. It's been a few months since I've flown, but the guys at the field (a few of which I didn't know) thought I was a real pro.

This bird has no pitch change whatsoever with flap deployment and tracks amazingly. I still wish they'd have let someone past puberty cover the thing, but they sure did design a GREAT FLYING warbird.

The Torqpro 70 looks like a nice fit. It would sound great in a Mustang IMHO

330-345 w Spektrum Telemetry. Engine is running great at that temp. Idle is low and reliable at the end of the flight. I get a audible readout every 20 seconds while flying.

Anyway I only have access to 91 & 95 unleaded here and 100LL avgas. I run currently run all my gassers on 91. Recommendations ?

I know the science behind a spoiler / deflector works, its used on full size aircraft and I've seen it on other RC warbirds as well.
The 100LL is the best to run. For the same reasons they run it in full scale.

Woo!

Had an interesting flight with the P-51 yesterday. Two bad things happened: The left inner gear door flew off the plane (and was lost in the riverbed), and somehow the rudder hinge wire worked its way out and got about 2/3 of the way out of the hinges by the time I landed. I heard scraping and saw the wire. If it had come all the way out...... dang.

Yikes!

I've read post of gear door failure on super fast electrics, but not on gas planes. Any idea on the cause of your failures and what we might check?

Cheers

I lost one gear door also. The front hinge half left in the wing was perfect so I must assume the hinge pin came out. The back hinge was ripped apart. I didn't glue my gear doors. I used small #2x 3/16 button head screws so it was easy to redo.

Hi,

It was strange. The gear were retracted, and the doors were always nice and flush. I had the plane in a 'speed run' so she was groovin' along. There's a piece of clear tape holding that wire in, but maybe it just vibrated it's way through. That would have been a real problem if it had blown off.

What does the remnants of the door hinge look like?
