Default Me-163b 'Komet' scale 1/4.9 full composite

Hi,
Started few months ago to build enlarged BT based Me-163b project. Some changes made based to Al Bentley drawings. Like slats and slots to leading edge.
Span will be about 75 inches. Plan is to build 2 versions One powered by ZG 20 titan with tuned pipe. And another water rocked powered glider.
Here pics from plugs. And some video from ZG 20 titan with loooong hub extension to keep everything inside.

Cheers

Thanks AlanC!
It was a must built stand for testing. Was amazed how smooth running it was with extension. Going to build baffles in stand so will simply drop in the engine to fuse.
Took lot of time with hobby lathe to make that hub. But could not live with cylinder out side of fuse.
Water rocket version need to stay under 4 kg better around 3kg for good altitude. There will be huge vessel laminated inside fuse, about 16-20 liters. 3-4 Gallons?

1st parting 1/4 took all day long. Lot of wash out makes this a challenge but happy with result. Tomorrow laminating 1st part of mold.

Easiest mold opening ever, 2-3 minutes and plug popped out!
Uncleaned mold and plug in pic! So happy!

These are great flying models. Why the Me 163 is so infrequently modeled is a real shame

Hi, yes planning to start making kits after test flights. August or september estimated release date.
Got to say love the looks of me-163's. And most of them are great flyers, when looking from youtube.
In july proto should get air under wings.

Very cool!!

i have my 60" Me-163 sitting on the bench, but bigger is always better!! I think 75" would be a great size.

I love the Komet so looking forward to seeing it progress

thanks

dave

Thanks!

Other one will be water rocket powered.
Took some time to build plug for water rocket bottle.

It will be 16 liters. Plug will be glassed soon and filled and sanded until smooth.
Bottle is so huge, its like bottle with wings.
Water rocket version will have only elevons. (2 or 3 servos)

Cheers

Hi,
Did you use elevator/aileron combination or elevons only. or elevons/trim as real me 163?
Those 2 models looks just awesome!!

Great, that's like in real plane. Maybe the elevons outboard will be the smartest way. And use inboard only for trimming/flight mode set up.
Thanks a lot!

Mold is done that way its possible to build wings separated. Or make only fuse, or wings. This is enlarged 150% from BT plans.
And modified based to Al Bentley drawings. 75 inch plane just fits perfectly to my old Jeep Cherokee.
So if buy BT plans from Traplet you can buy only fuse example. But lets see how this flyes. Proto should be in air at july.
Just love the idea making water rocket version also, launch and glide home.
Hope it works. Bottle will have 2 chambers so the water is on CG Should be more stable that way..
Try to get first pressure tests in 2 weeks.

Rocket engine plug done. Next few layers of carnauba.
Left on plug is a 'lip' which will be cut away from other side of laminated parts. So these will fit together.
After tubes and internal parts inserted, halves laminated together, and rolled few layers fibers on so it will take the pressures.
Hope i explain myself clear, if not just ask.

Looking good there Joro,

How many PSI are you planning to pump it up to?

thanks

Useful area would be 120-240 psi. Simulation gives them 43-117 meters or 135-383 feet, if dry weight is 3500grams.
My normal compressor gives 120psi so i need to invest to high pressure compressor or scuba tank to get those 240psi launch.
And need to do pressure tests with water for bottle before installing it to plane. With water it will just broke not explode.

so what kind of performance are you expecting from the pneumatic version? Altitude, speed, flight times etc

Hi, top climb speed around 135-235km/h. if its around 3500 grams, depending from pressure. 60-160meter altitude. And weight/wing area should be like glider.
Wing area/ weight ratio should 45grams /dm2. Profile should be good in gliding. If it goes up like rocket in 6 seconds and glides back like glider, goals are achieved.
And that's scale flying for me-163. So its only for fun. And lot experimental.

http://cjh.polyplex.org/rockets/simulation/

This simulator helps with brain work a lot.

Gasoline version will be more traditional plane and weight around 5000 grams. So this rocket version need to be very light,

Cheers
