That would be true if wind speed and atmospheric pressure where constants but slight modifications to flap deployment are always necessary so i use them on the dial but pretty much do everything else you suggested.

I use a flap/elevator mix on my warbirds. Some need a lot and some, none. I use a three position switch. Up, half and full. Works for me. I slow down before deploying flaps.
