Steve,

Thanks. We are having a ball building these big guys. I've seen that video of Charlies AD5 and love it. Can't wait to set in the flesh.

Steve,

Look forward to the photos. I started on the plugs for the gear door molds yesterday and at the end of the day today here is the progress.

Aloha Gentlemen,
I just ordered from Tomas an ESM Skyraider kit. Please...may I join this fraternity.

I'm a retired Army Viet Nam area helicopter gun pilot. Flew "B & C" model Huey guns ships in South East Asia. Our Joker fire teams flew along side both the Air Force and Navy Skyraiders. My first tour of duty was in 1966~1967...at 19 years of age. My second tour was with the same company, the 48th. Assault Helicopter Company...and with the 48ths Joker fire teams. The Skyraiders would come in and do their thing...and we would swoop into the area low level and help clean up the area.

I am going to power the ESM Skyrader with a PTE 36R (it was in my ESM F6F) and Sierra landing gear. Airtonics ten G and HD1501 servo's. I will install an electric tail wheel from Century Jet. I pray I will able to get this airframe under 18#'s and fly as nice as my ESM Hellcat did.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Hay Six Guns,
I will be most happy to put pictures up of my ESM Skyraider assembly. I sent Tomas at VQ Warbirds my request for the model and awaiting his notification of shipment. I built a Global kit of the Skyraider ten years ago and I managed to find a second kit two years ago. I've not started the second Global kit, or my Heritage kit, because I am moving over to gas powered models. The ESM Skyraider kit is larger and I bought it because I really like the power of my PTE 36R. That is one very strong 35cc class engine. I turn a Master Airscrew Scimitar wood prop at 7,800 rpm's and it hauled a 20 lb. model with authority. The only model in this 35cc gas engine size is the ESM Skyraider and why I chose that model to fly next.

Aloha Guys,
I just ordered my ESM Skyraider, drop tanks and retracts. I expect them to arrive in a week or so and coming from ARFPROS, out of Florida. She gave me the lowest shipping rates of any supplier in the U.S. The retracts may take some time to get here, and I believe Century Jet is going to make my gear. I am ordering their electric system with a retractable tail wheel-struts and wheels. From what I have read about this airframe, is that it does not build tail heavy like the ESM F6F, TBolt and other radial engine WWII heavy iron kits. Most recommended 26cc gas engines or 120 size two stroke or four stroke glow. My PTE 36cc gas engine will have some weight and I may need the tail weight...hence the retractable tail wheel. But this engine will be able to pull this model almost vertical indefinitely. I'm also not a real fan of how ESM connects the steering on their tail draggers or their kit supplied hardware. The hardware is not up to the job and I will be going with Robart hinge points and control horns and Sullivan pull/pull hardware.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

I'd love to see a Kellogg Skyraider and accessories at the Toledo show this year. Any chances of that?

How about me? My little 70's era Kyosho kit is way to the other side of the size spectrum with it's 54" wingspan but it's a great flyer and the HK electric retracts I modified to rotate really add to it. An old Enya .46 FS keeps it with an old school look.

Aloha Guys,
Well my ESM Skyraider arrived this morning and I opened the box. The model looks great and there was no aperient damage to anything I could find. I have yet to take my wings out, but the only thing I was unable to find were the retract wheel wells. The engine looks huge on this model and though 23~26 cc gas engines are recommended from all I've read, I'll be installing my PTE 36R. There have been no real infinitive builds in RCU that I was able to find on this model, so if you guys don't mind...I'll do the build here in the Skyraider thread.

My servo's are here, six HD1501BBMG's and one Hitch 225BBMG for the throttle. I'm running two receiver batteries and one ignition battery. ESM models build a bit heaver then stated, by as much as 5 lbs. All seem to need nose weight...but from what I've read the ESM Skyraider kit doesn't need as much as most ESM airframes need. We will see. My retracts are Century Jet electrical servo-less units and are due in in a week or two. This is going to be fun...I've everything just about here to assemble the model and can't wait to get started.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Aloha guys,
I did some work on my ESM Skyraider.

I managed to get the engine mounting pattern set properly and drilled the fire wall. I installed the standoffs with wide area washers on both sides of the fire wall and installed the engine. Next I got out my dremal and with a sanding drum, fit the cowl. The PTE 36 is a bit larger gas engine then the model is usually flown with, but several guys have installed DLE 30's with good results. I'll just have a bit better vertical presence with the 36 installed. It fit ok...but I had to remove a bit of the lower cowl and also make a cut for the choke pull/push wire. Next I installed the cowl with two screws on the top but need to address the lower cowl attachment screw issue.

The engine is off set just a bit to the left (as you sit in the cockpit) but it looks like a bit of right thrust is built into the kit for you. The engine was centered coming out of the cowl and looks good to me-so that was nice to see. This should help on take off for sure.

The instructions are almost useless and are not accurate in some places. It is assumed you know what your doing...oh really...?... : )

I'll figure out how to do the bottom cowl mounting placement at another time, but I did install two modified steel "L" brackets over the engine, to mount the electronic ignition unit. Then I went to trim the canopy and that is when I ran into my first glitch.

The plastic on my canopy was way to brittle and when I used my plastic scissors to trim off the excess-and there is a lot of excess to cut and fit...lots of little cracks formed. Not to happy with that and either the plastic used was really old, or what was used was not flexible enough for the job. Since the canopy rests on the fuselage sides...there is not much room to play with, if you want a flush canopy. So I used thick CA and spread it thinly over the inside edge of the canopy mounting flange. I'll need to get another canopy in...

My Century Jet electric retracts arrived and look really nice. I wanted to go with Sierra's gear...but non were available. I'll have a picture of my retracts next write up. But I have several pictures of where I am now.

Soft landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Aloha,
Well I'm back at it again and installed both my elevator and engine throttle servo's. I needed to make a more stronger attachment for my servo's and not real happy with how thin the plywood is, that ESM gives you to attaché your servo's. I ran into issues with my ESM F6F and ended up laying in thicker plywood under my servo's. My throttle linkage is installed to and I need to set up the fuel tank next. I'm going to drill a different hole for the engine electronic wires going through the fire wall, and set them up more to the starboard side of the fire wall.

Now I've a couple of questions for you Skyraider experts.

The Skyraider had...what I believe is...a speed brake on the belly of the airframe, just aft of the wing trailing edge. At least this is what shows on my Profile Publications # 60 information booklet. Has anyone ever put one of these on your Skyraider before. And if you did...how many degrees did you set it up to, and how much effect did it have on your model. Did the model pitch with deployment? Did it adversely effect your model?

Please let me know, for I'm looking to install one onto my ESM airframe. It would be a very simple modification to install and willing to install it if I can get a bit more information about its effect on the flying quality of the model.

It took a bit of searching, but I found an electric tail wheel assembly for the model. Lado sells one for this airframe and I will be ordering one for this model. The Skyraider had a small tail wheel assemble...and no gear doors that I can see. And I never liked the way ESM set up there tail wheel steering set up on their 30cc class fighters. My ESM F6F worked ok...but not as positive an operation that I would like. I will be using a pull/pull steering set up on my model.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui

Aloha Gentlemen,
Today I managed to get a few more things installed and I'm finished with the fuel system. I also needed to remove the engine and re-align the throttle cable a bit better. It now is much smoother in operation and happy with it so far. Things are a little tight behind the engine, but it will all find a place to set properly. Having a quick disconnect for the throttle cable is really nice and it solves a real hassle if you have it set up any other way. I also managed to install the fuel dot for the fuel tank and set up two filters for the fuel system-one filter into the fuel tank and one on the carb line from the fuel tank to the engine. The model comes with a 550 cc (18.6 oz.) fuel tank, and I substituted a red gas plug for the gas tank and assembled the tank. The fuel tank is held in place with Velcro and the fueling and over flow ports are screwed into place. I installed the Tx operated kill switch and indicator light. The indicator light, two voltage monitors ( for the Rx and ignition batteries) and digital RPM gauge were mounted into the cockpit area, under the canopy. The ignition box was set onto an aluminum plate, foam and temporarily ty-rapped in place. I ran the wire to the spark plug and set it up to clear the cowl.

To tomorrow I will figure out how to set the two lower cowl attachment points. There is no way to do so following the instruction booklet and In fact, the instruction booklet needs some serious work. This is a first addition model from ESM and it needs updating. But it is the only Skyraider in the 30cc size on the market, and only the second Skyraider ARF I've ever seen. The Global kit is doable, but builds heavy and is a .60 two stroke glow size model. I wanted a larger model, but the other kits and models available were all to large for me.

Soft Landings Always,
Bobby of Maui
