Default Smoke oil source

It was suggested to me that, rather than buy smoke oil by the gallon at our local hobby store, using equal parts of diesel fuel and red transmission oil is a less costly method and works just as well.
Have any of you tried this? If so how well does it work?
Is there another method?

It can be very messy and damage the finish on your airplane. I have had good success using clear Kero and mineral oil mixed 50/50. I get the mineral oil at Tractor supply and the kero at my local gas station. Works out to about $12 gal
