Warbirds Over the Rockies, September 12-14, 2014
Warbirds Over The Rockies is fast approaching and lots of new exciting element are taking shape.
First, the event has moved to the Arvada Associated Modelers field on Highway 93, just north of Golden. With 60 acres of parking and infrastructure we will have lots of room for cars and spectators. On top of that, we have a 750 foot runway with 100 ft. over runs on each end and 250 acres of fly over space. Six flight lines will be set up, so if a pilot wants to fly 8 or 10 times a day, we will make that happen!
Second, we have decided not to have a guest speaker this year. Instead. we will hold the banquet at the Wings Over The Rockies Air and Space Museum. The museum is one of the main tourist attractions in Colorado as it features a ton of wonderful aircraft such as F-84, F-86, F-100, F4, B1 plus a B-52 is parked outside. We have not settled on a menu yet, but it will be a catered dinner, similar to years past. We will hand out 25 trophies at the banquet with category winners picked by phantom judges. This will be followed by our auction. I cannot thank our Platinum Sponsors enough; Horizon Hobbies, Spectrum Radios, Aeroworks, RC Flightdeck, FTE and ZAP Glue.
The event officially starts Friday morning, but of course, if you come early, you can get a lot of open flying in before the busy weekend.
At noon each day, we will again put on an airshow starting with a half hour of full size flyovers of military planes. We have lined up a Seafury, P-51, T-28, Stagerwing, NA-50, T-33 and a Provost jet. The FAA has given us an airshow waiver, so the planes will be flying up close and personal.
Following the full size planes, we will feature the history of military aviation thru the years. Starting with a mass launch of WWI biplanes, we will quickly follow with 1930's "golden age" of aviation. An exciting pyro show will be a part of our WWII air battle reenactment including 30 ft fireballs, strafing runs and flak. The dropping of a simulated atomic bomb from the Enola Gay is just eerie. After all the explosions, we go to model jet demos with model jets approaching 200 MPH and climbing vertical over 2000 feet! We might even break the model sound barrier!!. We will finish the noontime show with a mass launch of small park flyer models. Pure chaos!. All of the pilots are invited to fly in the noontime show.
Speaking of pilots, we expect 150 pilots from all over the country and the world. Many national and international champion pilots will be performing. Most of the RC news media will cover the event.
Once again, we have partnered with Mental Health America/Colorado. Our goal is to exceed the $25,000 we have raised for this worthwhile organization each of the last several years. We are lucky to have many corporate sponsors who have already committed to pledge significant sums to help attain the goal. UMB Bank in particular has donated $5000 to Mental Health and other companies have stepped up as well, such as Enterprise Rental Cars.
We have negotiated with the Days Inn for discounted hotel rates. Ask for Donna at 303-277-0200.
So, if you are a RC pilot come fly with us and have a blast- literally.
If you just love airplanes and want to see excitement for the entire family, pile everybody in the car and come out. Admission is $10 for adults and kids 15 and under are free. The flying will start at 9AM each day. Preregistered pilots is $50.00
The address is 7608 Highway 93, Arvada Colorado. The entrance will be clearly marked.
Here is a short 30 second TV ad we plan to run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2EO0-nVhyg

Above is a short video of the noon time air show on Sat. My camera battery died at that time. Sat. was the largest model event I have seen in Colorado as far as number and quality of the models. The piloting was first class too.

Great event put together by a class act in Brian O'Meara. Thanks to all the expert sticks who shared their insight and wisdom with me. I think I learned more in a couple of days of spotting than I have in the last year of flying. Y'know who you are guys, and thanks for your generosity, patience and grace.
till next time,
Shaz
