The electric starter on mine is a tight fit as well. Slim chance I'm gonna have to take it off. It fits right where the dummy exhaust goes. I just need to mount the motor and see if I can take enough material off the back side of the dummy exhaust to make everything fit. Its gonna be tight!

How's this working out in terms of CG and overall weight? Considering this plane seems to be able to be built with much lighter engines with their center of mass closer to the firewall (and without dead lead ballast weight) it seems a stretch that putting on an engine that weighs probably at least twice as much as a DA80 does is going to work easily. It weighs over 13 pounds w/o ignition system, extra forward firewall brace, extra starter battery, etc right? Does that include the starter way out on the for end too? Don't get me wrong, I have my eye on this and hope it works out as I'd like to maybe have this combo too someday if it works well for many many flights in a row. Good luck and keep us posted!

I got the motor last week, it is a work of ar!. I think the only castings are on the walbro carbs. Everything is machined. It also came with a mounting kit specifically for the mustang. Not sure I would have purchased the motor without it. It has six rubber soft mounts that requires two firewalls. I am almost done with the mustang, waiting not he motor was holding me up. The supplied hardware and wood mounting kit was a great start, but needed a lot of trimming. A few of the wood parts were missing or way off in size. The rubber bushings that are supplied use 6mm bolts. The holes in the motor are 5mm. It was hard to take a drill to my brand new shiny Kolm! three of the four, I tapped. The fourth cannot screw in because of a plastic housing on the back of the motor. Weird that they designed it with uneven mounting on the back. I had to cut half of one of the rubber bushing off to make everything sit flush.

I have the keleo scale exhaust, unfortunately the electric starter gets in the way and I might not be able to use both. I need to talk to Kelvin about modifying it.

I ordered the electric start version, it did not come with an ESC, I have the electric starters for my DLE 55, they come with a a module to control it. Waiting on Hans to advise me on what I need.

Here are a bunch of pics, I'm halfway done, I'll update as I go.

That is the million dollar question, what is it gonna do to the CG?? The batteries will go behind the canopy on a tray. I have the CARF P-47, even with the moki 250, it took a ton of lead right at the nose to balance. Initially, I was worried about hanging that much weight off the nose from a structural standpoint. Lots of 6oz carbon, the forward mount, and not cutting any holes in the top of the fuse just aft of the main firewall makes me feel secure in that its not gonna fall apart.

I hope to start installing everything this weekend. Had a ton of family stuff going on lately and we're closing on a new house. Hoping to get it together before moving, or it might not fly by summer! I can't wait to fire this thing up and hear the motor!

I might have to fly this thing around with the cowl off… ;-) This motor is gorgeous! I was worried about the electric starter keeping me from being able to put the keleo exhaust in, I think I'll be ok. I milled the back half off of both of them, they are just for looks.

A long can in-runner motor can be equal to an out-runner in torque so its possible to find a motor of a smaller diameter that could do the job. It would be a little more narrow up front there.
Another option I can see would be a drive shaft from around the back of the engine or firewall connecting the gearbox to an out-runner.

Looks clean and awesome Mike!

Hopefully you can do the W&B this weekend and run the engine. Very cursious how it balances out and the total weight.

Be a while before I can do the CG. Just lots of soldering and cleaning things up now. Front end is pretty much done. I love the servo tray Kolm provides, but accessing the choke servo is tough. The dubro quick release ball links are helpful. Scale exhaust fit no problem. :-) Getting to everything behind the firewall without that big cutout would have been torturous.

Hi Dr Scoles I just received my mustang , and I am also planning to go with a kolm engine, I was just wondering where you got your stand? Did you custom build it or you can purchase it.

Default Spitfire cowl is actually wider than the Mustang?

So as I too am looking for an airframe to put a Kolm engine in, I read in a Carf Spit review the cowl was wider so the install for the electric starter and muffler was easier than on the mustang? I haven't seen the two side by side before. Is that accurate?

The starter is not an issue with the mustang after all. Thomas can answer the spit question. He has built or is building both of them.

Its confusing in that we have three motor choices that will all fit. the 100, 135 and 150. All with different sizes. I think its safe to say that the smallest one would be more than powerful enough. People have flown the mustang with a G62! The 135 just sneaks out the bottom of the cowl. Not a deal breaker. The 150 has smaller cylinder heights and might fit better but you have to push the firewall back quite a bit more. I think that would make fuel tank and component install a pain. Right now, there is enough room to put everything and work on it. If you used the 150, you might end up putting the gas tank under the pilot keeping you from having a full cockpit…Thomas???

Nickel, I made the cradle, just some 3/8" ply and a few hours. Here are pics showing where the cylinder head sticks out and the cradle. You can see just a corner of it on the forward hole for the exhaust. I made the holes that big so they would be symmetrical and allow the cylinder head to stick out. Yes, I'm gonna cut the exhaust… ;-)

I may get to balancing this weekend after all. Had a good session this morning before work. Need to see where the four batteries will go and build a tray. I have a digital balancer coming looking forward to trying it, it will weigh the plane as well.

Cool, thx. I don't see a cylinder poking out in any of these pics but I'll be back looking as you go. I don't know CARF model history but it seems like the p51 is a newer design between the two? More open access and easier to work on the engine or place components forward of the fuse. I heard the P51 is going through another kit update. How old are these two kits anyway? It'd be interesting to see specs on wing areas between the two kits. I'm sure they are close but just curious. Would really like to hear how differently they fly and land all things being equal, just curious. Seems mustang could distribute the weight of the Kolms better with the heavier tailwheels and elevator servos in the tail. That's what I'm really researching and miraculously can't find even though by now there quite a few flying by now. Go figure....

I was surprised at the limited info as well. I wanted a spitfire, the mustang is one of my least favorite warbirds…(although its growing on me) ;-) Then Greg Wright was selling one and I knew the work that was done on it would be done well, so I jumped on it.

I am leary of the spitfire gear at my field, pretty rough.

Ha, look what I found. At the WRAM show this year I snapped some quick shots of warbirds and didn't even realize at the time what the hell I was looking at in detail. Well, here's a CARF with the 135 installed...complete with some names... Well, maybe it's not too late to get an idea or two. Looks like the right exhaust stack is still on from a prior Keleo Creations installation using a prior conventional engine???

Perfect Job Dr!!!!!
Your istallation will work... Cowling also. You did all the Things which is needed.

Anyone asked about Il100 and Mustang:
believe me, il 100 will also work! 100 Percent enough Power. You Can See My new video of Bf109. 19.2 kg and Il100. It's no Problem.

Cool, pics. I did my best to not cut out the top behind the firewall like that. This motor is heavy, didn't want to upset the integrity of the fuse in that area. Might be overly cautious on this, I've already taken the nose off one carf plane…. ;-)

Looks like I was right, it was a prior project with a 3W-85 and Keleo exaust system. LOL

Well, you need to get this bird in the air and figure this all out for me soon before I start cutting away on mine ;-)

In one of the pics I took of the WRAM show P-51, there's no sign of the extra wing tip tank fuel filler cap you guys were mentioning earlier. Notice that? Are yours on both wing tips? See any signs of them accidentally putting those fuel filler markings on the bottom of the wings too?

I attended a meeting last weekend, flying my Spitfire/kolm 135. At 1:50 in the link below, you can hear the sweet noise
(Turn up your speakers...) In the clip, I am flying together with a Carf Corsair/Moki 300 and a Partech? AT6 Harvard/Moki 250.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xVWT2aMav1s

My Spit is also in some of the other youtube videos filmed at the meeting. Search "Fagernes Flyshow 2015 part one/two/three/...

I am enjoying the Kolm engine so much! It starts ridicoulsly easy, runs great at idle and full and cooling works great! Depending on outside temp and throttle use, I always end up between 125C-135C (255F-275F) on BOTH sylinders, only a few degrees difference.
