Elevator Servo question.

If you are using the Kolm 135 or larger engine, what elevator servos are you going with? Standard size doesn't really fit, right? The manual calls for jr DS3421 with only 75 oz-in @ 6V due to limited space in the horizontal stab but they are also using a much smaller engine in their manual than the 135. We're going to be capable of much faster speeds and have a much heaver plane with the Kolm than what I think the plane was designed for so just curious...sure we can try add weight to the counter balance area to try and reduce the load but...

I had Graupner DES 707 all around. Think the pull 15kg. Thats more then enough for a Warbird.

In Mustang i will use the Kolm-Kit. If you use the Il135, you Should Look for harder Rubbers. With 150 it will work with the soft One.

I tried to get my rubber-mounts harder.
They are available with 55 shore, 65 an 75 shore. you can get them from ebay. but with 65 or 75 you have to buy 100 pic becaus no dealer have them in stock. only 55 shore is available.

i took heat shrink with glue inside from "Raychem". its 35mm to 8mm. i put them over the 3 rubbers in the front of my bf 109. works very good... will change that in the back also.

I switched to aluminum hard mounts. I just wasn't comfortable with the rubber mounts. Not only was the motor moving a lot during idle, it wouldn't idle well because the throttle servo is fixed and the throttle arm is oscillating along with the body of the engine. I know it has been done successfully with rubber mounts, I just want to stick with a hard mount and see how it goes. I used 6mm bolts in the 20mm aluminum spacers. If you use 5mm, you can trim one bolt head and clear the pushrods on the one mounting tab. If you use 6mm, you will need to use a spacer that is tapped and put one 20mm bolt through the front and one through the firewall. I got a mill for Christmas, so it was a quick project to make the spacer and tap it. DLE sells a perfect 20mm spacer to replace the rubber ones. One of the spacers will also need to be cut on the back side to clear the plastic housing on the back plate of the motor. You had to do this with the rubber mount as well. Another quick mill project. I took some pics, will post when I get to work.

I had obvious problems with this set up... Curious if the rubber was same hardness. Next good weather and a free weekend will be maiden time!

DrScoles, good luck with the maiden flight! I see you have switched to hard mounts. I have used hard mounts from the start, and so far (lost track of flights, but probably close to 10hrs running time) they are great. I did check the engine after each flight at first, then every flying session and now....when I remember. They are rock solid, and no re-tightening has been done (checked but no need) since intallation.

The Kolm is so easy to start (no APS fuel pump), I just fill the tank (1liter/32oz), full choke, 1/2 throttle, ignition on and 10-15 flips....and it ignites. Choke off and 1/6-ish throttle and it runs after one or two flips. When I flew the Spitfire two weeks ago, it had not been out for almost 2 months, but still the same easy start) (My Moki on the other hand.....is another story).

Hope we get a first flight in this weekend plus some videos. I'll be Colorado all week so I'll be 'researching' the indigenous Warbird Scene, which is pretty good, with a special eye out for Kolm engines.

Photos from this weekend's "Fyresdal Jetpower 2015" in Norway. In addition to my jets, I brought the Carf Spitfire/Kolm135, as we were given a small slot to show off our warbirds. Getting more hours on my Kolm, and it is performing great every time

I used a 50 amp CC esc and a 3s lipo, I think around 2500mah.

Only started 4-5 times, so far so good. With my experience with another electric starter, you need capacity. I killed a few 800mah packs. Even though you aren't using much of the juice, for some reason, it needs to be 2500 or above to keep it from cooking.

Cool i'll go for that and maybe a cheapo 50A ESC with SPS switch.

Does your ESC have soft start? and do you use it for the 135?

yes, this is for a 135. Look a few pages back, we've talked about this in detail, might catch a few more tricks…..

Mine didn't come with the red plastic stays on the carb needles does anyone know if it should?

I removed all 4 when I installed it in the Spitfire. I found the adjustment inside the cowl much easier without them. Works just fine without.
