Tested the hard mounts today. Much better! I was afraid the whole fuse would shake at idle… nothing. Looked nice and smooth. Electric start is BAD ASS! Prop might have turned over 1.5-2 times each time I started it. I've got the needle at 1.5 out, cranked it back little less than 1/4 turn and we'll see how it acts next time out. All the mount bolts were still nice and tight after running it and no signs of any problems everywhere I could look.

Not a fan on how CARF designed the way you assemble the plane. Can't decide if its easier to do it with the fuse upright or inverted, either way its a pain.

Here's a vid of the start.

BAD ASS it is! A three-piece wing would sure be nice, with the l/g in the middle section. I allways assemble mine inverted, but it is a hassle to turn it when I am alone.

Hey that is BAD ASS and the musty looks sweet, the adrenaline is flowing just watching it and thinking about my kolm in the spitfire, can't wait.

DrScoles is it nearly ready to maiden?

Can't work out what pattern i need to drill the prop, is it the same as a DA150? anyone know? i had a few jigs but haven't flow for about 5 years and when you lend stuff out sometimes you don't get it back.

I got everything else i need to make it run so i'll get it set up for action next weekend and post the vid.

Love the vid it gave me heaps of motivation cheers!

Do you have the motor? I used the front plate as the drill guide. But I have a mill, so drilling straight holes is a little easier. Plane is very close to maiden, I'm dying to get it in the air, just too much going on right now. We close on a new house this week, so free time is going to be scarce for a while.

Snap i'm moving house to so it's all going on the back burner for a while plus the kids have us worn out.

Yes i have the motor and was planing to use the the front plate as you did, i was just wondering if it was a particular pattern.

Post the video when you get the maiden, can't wait to see it but i guess it's best to pick the right moment.

Hey Mike, that is awesome! Glad the hard mounts worked out better. Does not seem to be much vibration there at all now.

Thanks Craig, it went from watching the motor go at least 1/4" either way to no noticeable vibration at all. I was afraid it was going to shake the fuse quite a bit at idle, nothing. Front end is pretty rigid, laid up 6oz carbon throughout. Just gotta find some time now to get out to the field!

Thanks!!
The prop is from Siedel Props in Germany, its a 29" x 28" to go with my reduction.

The spinner is a hybrid of sorts that I made myself, because the Mustang really needs this to have that look. I took Dino's all aluminum spinner which has the best outline to start from and molded the front portion for a Carbon nose, then I turned an 1 piece aluminum back plate using the correct scale position from full size drawings and dimensions. All the lighting holes are done on my CNC mill.

It was difficult and time consuming, but the entire spinner ready to mount weighs only 7.5oz so I feel its well worth it in the end. Here are some pics...

where did you end up putting your main batteries and did you end up having to add any additional weight to the tail? how did you end up securing the batteries in the back. Depending on your answer I'm going to make a removable tray back there under the tail wheel somehow. BTW, what was your final all up weight?

I have the batts about even with the trailing edge of the wing. and one lipo just in front of them. three pounds of lead in the tail! That motor is a pig. I didn't do myself any favors by reinforcing things and there are a few things I could have put farther back but didn't want to. 49 pounds no fuel. My P-47 was around 75, this thing feels light compared to it.

using resin scale exhaust instead of the sweet metal ones I used would lighten the load, but they look too good to pass up. I thought about putting the lipo in the tail, but there really isn't much room back there. The steering servo and gets in the way. If you haven't installed it, you could get some weight right up against the back of the vertical fin, that would help.

i have my plane upside now with the tail wheel assembly out and scratching my head. Where the heck did you exactly put 3 pounds of lead and how did you secure it? I'm going to find a way to put two large A123 receiver packs down there in the back instead. That starter motor and battery are probably worth a couple pounds of lead in the tail, seriously.

Remember Lucky, I'm a dentist…. I get paid to do very precise difficult things in tight dark places…. ;-)

gary prince's steel powder and epoxy yes, it would be great to move a few packs towards the back. Although I'm not sure they will have a a huge effect on the weight needed. Where I have them now, they helping the problem, just not as much.

Where did your CG end up? when I talked to them prior to the first flight after converting to the kolm they didn't seem to have any concern about leaving it nose heavy and didn't seem inclined to want to work hard to add weight to the tail. I'll try to reconnect with the guys from the hobby shop with the exact same setup and see what they ended up doing. They did finally fly if as it's not posted in their hobby shop's youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ljB5RLcL64

Got engine on the test stand tonight and connected up electric starter with 50A ESC and 3s lipo and barely enough juice to swing it over, gonna need to go for a bigger rig.

I'm thinking 90A ESC and 6s lipo.

Hey Doc !

lokking forward to your maiden flight !!
your work looks perfect. if you donīt like the extra-wheigt in the tail, do your batteries in the back. if you want to start the IL135 with 3S you need a good ESC, sometimes the china-esc canīt do it. with 4S it starts easy, but with 3 it looks better :-)

if someone needs a switch-box for ESC and ignition you can contact me!

greets
tom

Hey Tom, Its killing me that I haven't flown it yet! Just too busy moving. I have everything over into the new shop, but its a mess, and we still need to move once the contractors are done changing a bunch of things.

I did get to fly yesterday, first time in a long time :-)

Hello!

The project mustang is "on hold". i got a mustang with IL135 and a spitfire with IL150 to build it in my hobbyshop. both for install the engine and cooling system. so there is no time for my own projects :-)

i can show you some photos from the mustang with the il135. the procedure is the same, no difference if you use il135 or 150. i finised it yesterday.
both are with electric start.

That be great Tom. Is the baffle kit that's being offered still a good way to go for proper cooling ?
