Made the air duct using 0.5mm alum sheet, slightly curved like the C-ARF above

I will mod the cowl bottom lip with some louvres / cowl flaps. I think that'll be good enough to suck out the hot air

Ahh, I see how it works now...the baffles around the motor help to keep the air moving toward the duct. I'm curious to see how you finish it out!

Change of plans

I was just about to start chopping the cowl for the 30cc Moki 2-stroke, when Affas video came up on the sister thread.
I think he has a Saito FG-36 - the sound is awesome, the part where he taxies back after the flight is very realistic.

Hi and thanks!

I think mine is perfectly powered. I do have a Saito FG 30 but I did have some reliability problems with it so I swapped to www.ch-ignitions.com with both ignition and carb and it is now so smooth!

Our local RC shop carries the OS GF40 which should be plenty of power for the Spitty, but what about cowl fit?

After some trial and error in CAD I ended up with the following optimal configuration:
- Engine inverted rotated 10 degrees
- 80-degree manifold to fit the muffler in the cowl
- I will make a 20mm prop shaft extension to move the whole engine further back in the cowl

On plan there's only the top part of the head protruding (the yellow part in the front profile) - not bad

And some r/l trials:
The exhaust will be at the cowl lip-wing root, not a bad spot

Good to know, I've ordered Adrian's kit to upgrade a FG-20 for my ESM Storch

Anyone flown this plane and can share their control surface throws? Would like to know that I am in the ballpark before I attempt to fly it.

JL,
We were looking at this Spitfire in Toledo and it looked pretty nice.
What are your thoughts on it so far.

Thanks,
paul

Until I fly it, I have no opinion. Mine is electric and I'm waiting on some items to finish it. Probably won't fly it til late May early June when the flying field is usually in good enough condition for me to consider flying it off of.

A good friend with a lathe made the custom prop hub extension for the GF40:

We made the 6 bolt setup like my Moki's, to be able to use the same props

The gas 4-strokes are prone to overheating, hence a thorough cooling with ducts baffles and outlet grilles is needed

Trials with cardboard:

For hot air outlet I made 3 grilles / cowl flaps. The one in the middle will eventually be enclosed in the carb intake (I'll cut the bottom off), the other 2 on the side

Initial field tests and engine break in:
I noticed that the engine is cooler with the cowl on! Baffling is doing its job I guess

Back in the shop to finish the setup, did an initial CG test and with the batteries in the tank area it still needed 1 lb to balance.
I hate ballast on planes, so I cut the servo tray in half and moved it forward of the CG:

The tray is mounted on the fuse sides with screws, to be removable for maintenance
Its a bit tight, but works

Maiden time!

OK the plane is not finished yet, this was just to make sure things are on the right track regarding CG, engine cooling etc.

It went really well, AUW is 8 kg dry with only 250gr in the nose. The plane is slippery and aerodynamically balanced, combined with low wing loading makes a very easy to handle warbird that has a very gentle stall (no wing drop, I tried hard as you see on the video) easy take-off and landing.

Engine still very rich as I'm half-way through the 4 litre break-in, but no problems with cooling
