Default 1:4.4 polikarpov I16 with saito fg84

Hi.
Im starting this thread after some request from other users here. I am half way in the building prosess and wil show you some pics from the start.

I am not so good to write english so it will not be so much text. but I read english good so just ask and I will try to answer

The kit is from modellbaumuder and all I got was a moulded fuse and covling, foamvings covered with balsa and some mouldet parts.
http://www.modellbaumuder.de/polikarpovi16ratae.htm

The engine will be a Saito fg84 R3 bought from rcjapan https://rcjapan.net/saito-engines-ra...s3p6iil78d4um2

The real thing

This is what was included in the kit.

Servoes and retract

when i glued the wings together I put inn a alu tube. But I did not think of space for the retract. So I had to cut away some of the tube. I will make some more reinforcement in front and back of the tube

Glassing of stab. Got the horns for the elevator and rudder hidden in the fuse.

made firewall and glued in place. engine mounted and the bird is standind for the first time

This is the only paper that came with the kit so I have to use my brain on this one.

The elevator horn setup looked rather flimsy. I hope you won't use it as is....

Hello Kwik

I plan to use it almost as it is on the pic. I will put something between the rod and the stab. so the torque from the pull-pull wire dont stress the joint where the rod is conected to the elevators. And I will drill a small hole through the horn and the rod and use a longer screw so it cant move.

I have a very similar set-up on my I-16 at 115 span and 63 pounds. It will work fine as long as that tiller arm is of the proper material.

Realy awesome rata you got there F4u5
How is it to fly?

I am a little scared of how it will perform in the air. I dont know how much motion i should have on the elevator and the rudder. The paper that came with the kit say 5mm up and 5mm down on elevator. and nothing about the rudder or aileron. I dont think the aileron is a problem but the rudder and the elevator.

From my experience, the plane performs wonderful, just as any other airplane, in the air. It tracks perfect and is very solid. The elevator and rudder and very effective. I actually fly with a max of 1/2 inch travel on the elevator. The rudder is also very effective. You would think that big flat nose would cause the airplane to be draggy, but it does not really have any negative effect. I added small spilt flaps on mine, . I know it is not scale, but it does improve landing with 1/2 flap. The only thing is that you have to fly it all the way to the ground. Mine is a bit heavy, but a friend of mine has one as well. They are not floaters. If you fly them in with power, you will be fine. They land pretty similar to the full scale. I can tell you this, it is a crowd pleaser, and fun to fly. I would build another.

It sounds great. Do you have a 1/2 inch travel up and 1/2 inch down or is that total travel?

I have cut out in the wing for the retract mounts. I used a angel grinder to get clean cuts

I actually have 1/2 inch up and down, with dual rates, that is cut to about 3/8 up and down. The elevator is VERY effective. Looking forward to you final product.

In case it can be of some help, here is my build thread: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-w...ov-i-16-a.html

Here was the crash video just for fun. There was actually no structural damage, outside of a broken stab spar. Long story on cause of the crash, but not the airplane's fault

Thanks for the info about the elevator. Hard to see a nice plane go down like that

Finished the retract mount today. that was one o my biggest issues in this build.

made servotray for elevator and rudder. Will reinforce it more, but have to know where the fuel tank will be placed.
Glued the stab in place. The fin was not moulded in right angle so i straigted it and filled it with spray foam. the one used for buildings.

Hi
Happy to hear there are several building the same kit. please post pics and info about your build

For the firewall I just made it out of thick paper first. And use that as a template. Glued it in place with tec7.

wing is soon ready for maiden. Just have to make the push rods for the ailerons. The wing is covered with solartex and 4 coats of primer. I will wait to paint the wings to after the maiden. Next is mounting the servoes in the fuse.
